Visual and audiovisual advertising is an influential social language that transforms representations of reality into cultural references, with direct implications for the perception of diversity. However, despite its impact on the fabric of society, few studies have tackled the representation of phenotypic variability in advertising by combining academic and professional perspectives on the phenomenon in Spain. Our study explores this matter through systematic data collection from 834 TV adverts, coding data on 359 on-screen characters, and in-depth interviews with 38 advertising professionals. The conclusions of the study show, among other findings: (a) the low level of phenotypic diversity in television advertising; (b) the under-representation of certain groups; and (c) the complexity of decision-making between clients and agencies, who have to reconcile risk aversion with the effectiveness required for any advertising campaign. This research can be of use for companies in the advertising sector (giving them improved knowledge of specific targets) and policymakers (by helping to promote better intercultural dynamics and the integration of minority groups).

The representation of phenotypic diversity in audiovisual advertising in Spain: professional perspectives and implications for the cultural dynamics of inclusion

Este artículo ofrece los resultados de una investigación exploratoria y descriptiva acerca del funcionamiento de los medios de comunicación universitarios en Colombia como fórmulas innovadoras que ponen en práctica y potencian el aprendizaje adquirido en las facultades y en las escuelas de comunicación del país. En la modalidad cualitativa se realizó una encuesta estructurada a 17 directivas de medios universitarios de Colombia. Respecto al ejercicio informativo, los encuestados destacan entre las principales ventajas de los medios universitarios la independencia o la autonomía editorial, la versatilidad y la flexibilidad periodística. Entre las desventajas o los aspectos a mejorar señalan la falta de un modelo de negocio o de fondos, la menor escala de impacto en las publicaciones y la mayor dificultad en el acceso a las fuentes. Los resultados destacan el valor de estos medios como escenarios de aprendizaje significativamente distintos a los espacios curriculares y a los planes de aula convencionales. Estos medios operan como laboratorios controlados pero abiertos a la exploración de la realidad, en la cual los nuevos periodistas, puestos en situación, aprenden desde el propio hacer.

La transformación constante del perfil de la audiencia y sus hábitos informativos obliga a mantener un estudio actualizado para conocer nuevos usos y segmentos de mercado, un aspecto más destacado en las generaciones jóvenes debido a su dieta informativa cambiante, lo que afecta a la enseñanza periodística. Esta investigación ofrece una aproximación sobre el uso informativo de aplicaciones móviles que realizan los estudiantes universitarios. A su vez, se vincula con un estudio de caso de la aplicación universitaria UVaNow, en el marco de aplicación hiperlocal y de aprendizaje electrónico móvil. Esta aplicación ha sido impulsada desde el proyecto de innovación docente LabcomUva, con un desarrollo tecnológico interdisciplinario entre las áreas de Periodismo y Telecomunicación de la Universidad de Valladolid. El estudio recurre a una doble metodología cuantitativa y cualitativa mediante la utilización de una encuesta (N = 294) y un grupo focal. Los resultados confirman que los universitarios descargan una media de 20 aplicaciones y que, pese a que su principal fuente de noticias son las redes sociales, se siguen informando a través de las aplicaciones mediáticas debido a la profesionalidad, la veracidad y la reputación de estas. Respecto al análisis empírico sobre nuevas aplicaciones en el aula, este indica que prefieren hacer un uso utilitario de las aplicaciones universitarias antes que informativo y que ofrezcan información multimedia y servicios personalizables.

Las aplicaciones sociales han revolucionado no solo la forma de ejercer la profesión periodística, sino también la manera en la que los consumidores acceden a la información. Cuatro generaciones diferentes de periodistas —centeniales, mileniales, generación X y baby boomers—, de diferentes medios de comunicación del País Vasco, han contestado a un cuestionario sobre el uso que hacen de las principales herramientas sociales, como Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn y la red de mensajería WhatsApp. Los resultados de más de 500 encuestas muestran una gran brecha generacional entre los profesionales más jóvenes y los de edades más avanzadas. Además, la infrautilización de algunas herramientas como Telegram o LinkedIn evidencia un desconocimiento junto con una escasez de formación por parte de las empresas. Nuevas aplicaciones como TikTok o Twitch no entran en las rutinas diarias de estos profesionales de ninguna de las generaciones analizadas.

Los profesionales de la información y el uso de las redes sociales en las redacciones: perspectivas y desafíos por grupos de edad

This study analyses the current state of media education in Catalonia, its strengths and weaknesses, and the challenges it faces. In-depth interviews with five specialists and six teachers and educators were carried out. This qualitative approach offers key first-hand insight into the definition of the term ‘media education’; the relationship between media education and ethical journalism; core elements any media education programme should include, along with content, tools and guidelines for teachers; the level of expertise and training of teachers and specialists; the importance of student access to media education initiatives; and the challenges of media literacy. Results show that media literacy includes the ability to read and understand media languages and to create audiovisual messages independently and maturely, and to take certain ethical principles into consideration; and that the media companies should take their responsibilities seriously, since it is they that create images and role models that have a great impact on children and teenagers – while children and teenagers, on the other hand, demonstrate a very positive response to media literacy initiatives. The specialists and educators interviewed have different levels of training and have been involved in a variety of projects. They note that key challenges for media literacy include lack of interest from the authorities, lack of training among teachers, and the need for incentivisation and easy-access resources for educators.

Media education in Spain: Awareness, implementation, and challenges. The case of Catalonia

Desde hace ya más de una década las elecciones en España tienen una doble lectura: la que se hace en el mundo real y la que se extrae de las redes sociales. La literatura académica sobre este aspecto es dilatada. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la presencia de los cuatro candidatos principales a las elecciones generales del 23 de julio del año 2023 a la presidencia del Gobierno. Para ello, emplea una metodología cuantitativa con el uso de herramientas para la recolección de datos en redes sociales. Entre los principales hallazgos cabe destacar que los candidatos que generan mayor respuesta por parte de los usuarios son Yolanda Díaz y Santiago Abascal. Del mismo modo, la imagen, y en concreto el mundo audiovisual, se convierte en el centro de la comunicación política en redes sociales, relegando al texto a un segundo plano.

This article discusses the representation of women in Colloquial Egyptian proverbs (CEPs). Even though myriad studies have tackled the image of women in many linguistic genres, this is the first study to discursively examine such portrayal in Egyptian proverbs. Proverbs are usually laden with a moral legacy so instructive that it can steer the rudder of social ideologies. In patriarchal societies, however, sexist proverbs represent women negatively and sediment their submissiveness. The aim of this paper is to explore the major themes in the representation of women in CEPs. To this end, we conducted a thematic analysis of the data from a feminist critical discourse analysis perspective, employing Glick and Fiske’s (2001) Ambivalent Sexism Inventory with its two types of sexism, hostile sexism and benevolent sexism. The data revealed six major themes and 17 subthemes, all exhibiting either hostile or benevolent sexist depictions of women. The data showed that the CEPs were mostly designed to enforce male supremacy over women. Women were portrayed as a source of shame if they did not obey the rules of patriarchal society. While women were objectified and commodified, superficially valuing women for their stereotyped female attributes of domesticity and nurturing of their children, women’s worth is depicted as conditional upon men’s evaluation.

Los estudios literarios de Aristóteles perduran a pesar de que la lingüística cartesiana negó que su autoridad pudiera servir de prueba científica. Fueron los mismos gramáticos quienes los validaron como prueba al reconocer la competencia lingüística del hablante. Comprobaron que la ambigüedad léxica, que algunos filósofos reprochaban como defecto del lenguaje cotidiano, obedecía al proceso de gramaticalización que Aristóteles explicó en sus trabajos sobre gramática, poética y retórica. El artículo enlaza la persistencia de la tradición retórica durante la modernidad con la automatización de los procesos mentales que alcanza, con el algoritmo ChatGPT, un punto culminante, para concluir, con Chomsky, que la máquina usa medios incalculables para emular la inconmensurable creatividad humana sin superarla.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the media results in the publication of thousands of automated news articles in Spanish every day. This study uses a Turing test to compare the quality of news articles written by professional journalists (from Efe) with those produced by natural language generation (NLG) software (from Narrativa). Based on Sundar’s dimensions (1999) crucial to news perception – credibility, readability and journalistic expertise – , an internationally validated experimental methodology is employed, exploring a novel topic in Spanish: health information. The experiment deliberately varied real and declared authorships – AI and human journalists – to detect potential biases in assessing authorship credibility. A self-administered questionnaire adapted for online surveys was used (N=222), and gender imbalances were minimized to ensure gender equality in the sample (N=128). The study reveals that there are no significant differences between news articles generated by the AI and those written by professional journalists. Both types of news are considered equally credible, though some biases are detected in the evaluation of declared authorship: the AI author is perceived as more believable than the human, while the human journalist is perceived as creating a more lively narrative. The study concludes that it is feasible to produce automated news in Spanish without compromising its quality. In the global media landscape, automated systems employing NLG, machine learning and sophisticated databases successfully advance into new domains such as health information.
