The Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures keeps an extensive collection of Japanese woodblock prints ukiyo-e. The collection includes also the prints by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861), one of the late Edo masters of ukiyo-e, especially famous for his warrior prints musha-e. The article focuses on only a part of Kuniyoshi’s work – his triptychs. During his life Kuniyoshi designed more than 300 triptychs, the Náprstek Museum keeps 21 of them. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of prints in the collection, a description of their provenance, and an analysis of the motifs depicted on them.

This study focuses on two sets of photographic material from the environment of the Moravian missions on the Labrador Peninsula. Two Czechs stayed there independently in the first decades of the 20th century. While Jiří Jaeger (1895–1975) lived and worked in Labrador between 1914 and 1919 as Vojtěch Suk (1879–1967), a physician, practised medicine there in 1926 and collected samples for anthropological research. In the ethnographic photographic collection of the Náprstek Museum there are slides from both originators, and in Jiří Jaeger’s collection there is also a set of photographic negatives. During the research, these images were assessed in terms of technical and thematic aspects.

Photographic Images of Labrador Moravian Missions in the Náprstek Museum Photographic Collection

The present paper focuses on the pottery corpus recovered from strata attributed to pre-Natakamani horizon in the area of kom H and kom A (Typhonium, WBN 200) at Wad Ben Naga. The first part of the paper describes the stratigraphic contexts from which the pottery came and establishes distinction between features related to the construction of structure WBN 700, others linked to its subsequent adjustments and/or later disturbed and finally, contexts related to its destruction and razing of the ground in preparation for the building of the Typhonium. The pottery corpus itself is analysed with special attention given to the issues of its dating and identifying the attributes distinguishing it from other, mostly later, pottery corpora from Wad Ben Naga. Amongst others, it was mainly the significant appearance of several pottery form types which were in general characteristic for Meroitic contexts datable mostly between the 1st century BCE and early 1st century CE. In effect, the analysis of the pottery corpus attributed to the pre-Natakamani horizon helped to confirm and precise dating of individual events in the area and allowed to establish a clearly defined, temporally specific profile of Meroitic ceramic culture which may serve for comparison with other pottery assemblages at Wad Ben Naga and beyond.

In addition to larger collections of Mapuche artifacts acquired during the prolonged stays of Milan Stuchlík (1932–1980) and Vaclav Šolc (1919–1995) in Araucania, Chile, during the 1960s and 1970s, the Náprstek Museum also houses two smaller collections of Mapuche jewellery. The first four jewels were purchased from Eduard Tauer in 1896 and two more pieces were acquired in 2024 from the estate of diplomat Stanislav Svoboda (1926–2015). This article serves as the first introduction to the Mapuche jewellery collection originating from these two collectors. It examines the use, age, and material composition of the artifacts and the collectors responsible for the acquisitions and compares this collection with the Mapuche jewellery collection in the Weltmuseum Vienna. Furthermore, the article outlines potential avenues for further research.
