Magnetic spherules from Pleistocene terrestrial sediments in southern Hungary were systematically collected and investigated. By means of chemical analysis, Fe, Fe(Mn), Fe(Ni) and glassy (silicate) spherules can be distinguished. Some of them have characteristic features suggesting an extraterrestrial origin: Ni-bearing crust, Ni-rich core and especially the platinum group nuggets with their unique chemical composition. They could have been formed by meteorite ablation process.

Re-evaluation of meteorites from the Carpathian Basin: Preliminary results from Kisvarsány, Knyahinya, Mezőmadaras, Mike, Mócs and Nyírábrány

重新评估喀尔巴阡盆地陨石：来自基斯瓦尔桑尼、克尼亚欣亚、梅泽马达拉斯、米克、莫克什和尼里阿布兰尼的初步结果

U/Pb data on single zircons from acidic volcanics are presented from the Kekkut-4 borehole, Balaton Highland, Transdanubian Central Range, Pelso Mega-Unit. Generally accepted as Lower Permian in age, they were also considered - due to some metamorphic features - to belong to the metamorphic, Lower Paleozoic basement. Clear, elongated crystals of these thick, acidic volcanics are regarded as co-genetic magmatic products, supplying a U/Pb age of 291.4±4.7 Ma (Lower Permian), representing the first radiometric magmatic age-dating of Upper Paleozoic acidic volcanism in this tectonic unit.

Zircon geochronology of the “Kékkút quartz porphyry”, Balaton Highland, Transdanubian Central Range, Hungary

Distribution and partition of heavy metals (Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) in four forest soil profiles characterized by different parent materials and similar pedogenic processes were studied to distinguish the inherited characteristics from those caused by pedogenic processes in soils at natural background level of these metals. Distributions of total heavy metal amounts are determined mostly by the parent material, while the repartition of heavy metals among the soil components is regulated mainly by pedogenic effects. Heavy metals bound to residual phases are almost solely inherited from the parent material. Combined effects are the clay illuviation with different clay mineralogy due to the differences in parent material, as well as the calcareous subsoil resulting from inheritance and secondary carbonate precipitation. In the studied samples the organic matter plays the most decisive role in binding heavy metals. A significant proportion of lead is bound to it, but it also has an effect on copper and nickel repartition. Cobalt exhibits high affinity to Fe and Mn oxides, which is also characteristic of lead and zinc. The slight accumulation of zinc in the B horizon of soils suggests its relation to clay minerals.

Geologic and pedogenic effects on heavy metal distributions in forest soils from the Cserhát Mts and the Karancs area, NE Hungary

At the Permian/Triassic boundary, terrestrial as well as marine life was seriously decimated. The drastic reduction was possibly due to a global event. In order to demonstrate this, sections at great distance from one another need to be correlated, which is a difficult task, especially between marine and land sections. One of the methods, which is independent of the environment, is magnetostratigraphic correlation. It was intended to apply this method for precise dating to Permian/Triassic boundary sections from the Bükk Mts, which include strata with high concentrations of magnetospherules. Since the Paleozoic-Mesozoic rocks of the Bükk Mts are anchimetamorphosed and intensively tectonized, it was decided to carry out a pilot paleomagnetic study on samples from two sections with different dips, before collecting a large number of samples for the intended magnetostratigraphy survey. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. The rocks of the sections possess remanences of pre-tilting age, and the magnetic fabric does not show any evidence of strong deformation. Nonetheless, the magnetization can not be primary since the measured inclinations are far too steep for the Permian/Triassic boundary. The estimated age of the acquisition of the paleomagnetic signal is Late Cretaceous. Although the results are negative in terms of magnetostratigraphy, they deserve attention from a tectonic point of view. The observations suggest that either the studied localities or the entire range of the Bükk Mts was involved in a post-Cretaceous (but pre-Miocene) counterclockwise rotation of about 40°

Paleomagnetism of Permian-Triassic sections, Bükk Mts, Hungary

匈牙利布克山脉二叠纪-三叠纪地层的古地磁学研究

The Permian/Triassic boundary was recognized in continuous marine successions in several outcrops in the Bükk Mts, North Hungary and in a few core sections in the northeastern part of the Transdanubian Range. In the Bükk Mts, of four studied boundary sections only two proved to be complete. They represent an outer ramp setting. In these sections the topmost Permian is made up of dark gray limestone, rich in fragments of crinoids, calcareous algae, mollusks, brachiopods, ostracods, and foraminifera. There is a dramatic decrease in the amount of the bioclasts in the last two limestone layers, which are overlain by a 1 m-thick shale bed. The lower two-thirds of this bed still contain Permian fauna but its upper part is almost free of bioclasts. The overlying platy limestone contains a pauperized fossil assemblage indicating stress conditions. The two core sections studied in the Transdanubian Range represent an inner ramp setting. The uppermost Permian is made up of lagoonal-sabkha cycles. It is overlain by subtidal packstone-grainstone, rich in Late Permian fossils. Oolitic facies characterizes the boundary interval. Onset of ooid formation was probably the consequence of biotic decline leading to cessation of skeletal carbonate production. Along with oolite beds, stromatolites, micrite with "microspheres" and fine siliciclastic microlayers characterize the basal Triassic succession, reflecting overall stress conditions and the changing energy of the depositional environment.

Facies analysis of marine Permian/Triassic boundary sections in Hungary

匈牙利二叠纪/三叠纪界线地层相分析

The Jurassic succession of Gorski Kotar reveals the typical sedimentary signature of the inner Adriatic Carbonate Platform realm. On the basis of its facies characteristics eleven informal lithofacies units can be distinguished. By origin, they are grouped into three depositional settings that alternated over the spacious Adriatic platform area during the Jurassic. These are: (1) subtidal below fair-weather wave-base to higher-energy subtidal above fair-weather wave-base, (2) subtidal below fair-weather wave-base with episodic higher-energy influences and (3) peritidal. The alternation of depositional settings reflects periods of intensive, large-scale regional tectonic movements during the geodynamic evolution of the western Neo-Tethys region, such as the opening/closing of the Dinaridic branch of the Neo-Tethys and opening of the Adriatic basin.

Jurassic section of Gorski Kotar (Western Karst Dinarides, Croatia) facies characteristics, depositional setting and paleogeographic implications

A Jurassic marginal depositional system of the Adriatic carbonate platform was analyzed in order to determine its depositional architecture and major depositional controls. Based on their facies characteristics, seven lithofacies units have been distinguished, which constitute four paleoenvironmental associations: top of the platform (shallow subtidal below and above the fair-weather wave-base), upper foreslope, toe-of-slope and basin. The environmental changes are interpreted to be related to tectonic activity as a consequence of regional extensional movements, connected with the opening of the Dinaridic branch of the Neo-Tethys. These extensional movements resulted in multi-stage drowning of the northeastern part of the Adriatic carbonate platform, leading to its gradual back-stepping and accordingly the expansion of the pelagic basin. The interpretation presented here can serve as a useful model for re-evaluating previously analyzed sections of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform margin.

Quaternary relief evolution of various volcanic areas in Hungary has been determined by (a) the original volcanic succession and related, primary landforms and (b) the subsequent postvolcanic tectonism and erosion. This overview presents some details of these processes through selected relief types from the Miocene volcanic mountains of Hungary: the High Börzsöny erosional caldera rim, the Rocks of Vadálló-kövek, the Dobogókõ Ridge, the Danube Bend area, and the badlands and fairy chimneys of the southern foreland of the Bükk Mts, by showing different volcanic relief types, and postvolcanic tectonic, paleogeographic and erosional history. In the Quaternary, the tectonic transformation of these and other volcanic areas has been highly variable; in contrast, erosional processes of the Quaternary, i.e. pedimentation, loess and other eolian sedimentation, derasion, periglacial relief formation, and channel erosion, have affected almost all areas in Hungary; hence types and rates of erosion can be well constrained.

Aspects of Quaternary relief evolution of Miocene volcanic areas in Hungary: A review

The recently encountered Upper Cretaceous (Santonian) Iharkut terrestrial vertebrate locality has yielded several vertebrate taxa since its discovery. Scincomorphan lizards are also represented in this fauna by several jaw fragments. The most abundant of these is represented by seven dentary fragments and an indeterminate jaw fragment with characteristic teeth. The hypertrophied splenial, the heterodont dentition, the cementum deposition at the bases of the teeth, and the large subcircular resorption pits assign this type to the family Teiidae. The dentition is composed of conical, monocuspid teeth in the mesial region and transversely widened bicuspid teeth in the distal region. This morphology is well known in members of the subfamily Polyglyphanodontinae. Based on their dental morphology the Iharkut finds can be easily assigned to the genus Bicuspidon. Bicuspidon aff. hatzegiensis (Squamata: Scincomorpha: Teiidae) from the Upper Cretaceous Csehbánya Formation (Hungary, Bakony Mts)

The newly discovered crustal xenoliths from Miocene andesites in the Mátra Mts (Northeast Hungary) were classified into three petrographic types. Type 1 is a garnetiferous, plagioclase-rich cumulate rock, presumed to originate from the felsic portion of the nearby Szarvaskõ-Darnó mafic igneous complex. The almandine-rich garnet has been inferred to be of granulite facies origin. Garnet - orthopyroxene geothermobarometry on the orthopyroxene - plagioclase corona structure around it indicates a later high temperature (800-950 °C) low pressure (3-4 kbar) retrogression event. Type 2 is also plagioclase-rich cumulate rock with contact metamorphic assemblage containing spinel, corundum and andalusite, which crystallized in the course of dehydration reactions of biotite and/or smectite in hornblende hornfels to sanidinite facies conditions. Type 3 is microsyenite, which contains abundant anorthoclase and minor amount of Na- and K-rich kaersutitic-barkevikitic amphibole.
