The Annals of Operations Research publishes peer-reviewed original articles covering key aspects of operations research, including theory, practice, and computation. Abstract Digital assistant is a recent advancement benefited through data-driven innovation. Though digital assistants have become an integral member of user conversations, but there is no theory that relates user perception towards this AI powered technology. The purpose of the research is to investigate the role of technology attitude and AI attributes in enhancing purchase intention through digital assistants. A conceptual model is proposed after identifying three major AI factors namely, perceived anthropomorphism, perceived intelligence, and perceived animacy. To test the model, the study employed structural equation modeling using 440 sample. The results indicated that perceived anthropomorphism plays the most significant role in building a positive attitude and purchase intention through digital assistants. Though the study is built using technology-related variables, the hypotheses are proposed based on various psychology-related theories such as uncanny valley theory, the theory of mind, developmental psychology, and cognitive psychology theory. The study’s theoretical contributions are discussed within the scope of these theories. Besides the theoretical contribution, the study also offers illuminating practical implications for developers and marketers’ benefit.

The reference quality effect is an important factor that influences consumer purchasing behavior. To investigate how firms should incorporate the reference quality effect under different business models, we focus on a supply chain consisting of a supplier and a retailer where the retailer can be an offline store, a pure online store or a combination of offline and online stores within an offline to online model. We formulate the reference quality effect with a modified Nerlove-Arrow model and use two different sales functions to reflect the fact that the reference quality effect will affect consumers in various ways when the business model varies. Utilizing differential game theory, the equilibrium decisions of the channel members are derived, and the analysis illustrates how the firms should adjust their decisions when the retailers use different retail patterns. The basic model does not allow product returns, but then this assumption is relaxed. Comparison between the two cases shows under what conditions consumers will benefit from the retailer’s allowing product returns.

Abstract Support vector machine (SVM) is one of the most important class of machine learning models and algorithms, and has been successfully applied in various fields. Nonlinear optimization plays a crucial role in SVM methodology, both in defining the machine learning models and in designing convergent and efficient algorithms for large-scale training problems. In this paper we present the convex programming problems underlying SVM focusing on supervised binary classification. We analyze the most important and used optimization methods for SVM training problems, and we discuss how the properties of these problems can be incorporated in designing useful algorithms.

Online reviews provide users with the opportunity to rate various types of items such as movies, music, and video games using a combination of numeric scores and textual comments. The study proposes a novel method that applies statistical matching on network-based covariates, with the aim to improve the estimation of the association between words and highly controversial items in online reviews. The application of this method on a sample of 40,665 items from the website Metacritic detects 218 highly controversial items. The application supports the theory that controversies on Metacritic are driven with a sense of self-awareness of participating of an online controversy ('review bombing'). Typical controversial topics (sexual identities, religious morality, politics) are associated with controversial reviews, too.
