We particularly welcome interdisciplinary research that connects soil with climate change, biodiversity, global health, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, as such studies often exhibit novelty, broad impact, and unexpected outcomes.

Abstract Intensification of crop production in Tonga has resulted in a move to mechanical soil preparation, often with a rotary hoe, and a consequent loss in both chemical physical fertility. An experiment was conducted on a clay loam soil (Typic Argiudoll) on the Forestry Vaini Research Station, Tongatapu Island, Tonga, to investigate the effect of a once‐off application of mulch on yield and quality of watermelon, maize and capsicum grown in rotation over a 1‐yr period. The treatments applied were a nonmulched control, transparent plastic and 200‐mm‐thick applications of locally available coconut sawdust, guinea grass and mature coconut fronds. The fresh fruit yield of watermelon in all the mulch treatments was 7.3–18.1% higher than in the nonmulched control. There was no significant effect of thick vegetative mulch on maize grain dry matter yield; however, the maize yield was significantly lower in the transparent plastic mulch than in the other treatments. The capsicum marketable fruit yield in the following crop was increased by 49–73% in all the vegetative mulch treatments compared to the non‐mulched control. The higher crop yields with the vegetative mulch were attributed to the measured lower soil temperatures and higher soil moisture in these treatments. There was no effect of mulch on soil total N ( TN ), but soil total C ( TC ), soil labile C ( LC ) and the carbon management index ( CMI ) were increased.

Abstract. Since the 1980s, land use in rural areas of China has changed greatly as the result of political initiatives. These changes have caused soil nutrient changes which are examined in this paper for Zunhua County, northern China from 1980 to 1999. The areas of farmland, grassland, and paddy decreased greatly and were replaced by increases in forest and residential land. The soils under forest in 1999 transformed from farmland in 1980 increased in organic matter by 21%, total nitrogen by 18%, available nitrogen by 65%, available phosphorus by 17% and available potassium by 17%. Similarly, in the area which was converted from farmland in 1980 to grassland in 1999, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, available nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium increased by 38%, 37%, 71%, 2% and 28%, respectively. Changes from farmland to forest and grassland not only changed land cover but also improved soil fertility and probably reduced soil nutrient losses.

Soil nutrient changes due to land use changes in Northern China: a case study in Zunhua County, Hebei Province

Abstract Increasing consideration is being paid to sustainable slow‐release fertilizers (SRFs). Biochar is a novel carbon material, and gaining momentum as a natural carrier for sustainable nutrient application and release and improved soil health. Accordingly, a recent biochar‐embedded slow‐release nitrogen (N) fertilizer has been prepared using acacia biochar, urea, ammonium chloride, starch and organic acid. This and other biochar‐embedded slow‐release N fertilizers (BSRNFs) were characterized using Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). BSRNFs were tested in the laboratory and field experiments for their N release pattern, nitrate (NO 3 ‐N) leaching loss, N use efficiency (NUE) and growth and yield of rice crops. Among the BSRNFs tested, the one with 75% urea‐N (BSRNF‐U75) released 109 mg kg −1 of N in an incubation study and the least NO 3 ‐N leaching losses of 8.8, 14.6 and 26.4 mg kg −1 at 10, 20 and 30 cm depth in a column study, respectively, compared with conventional urea. Application of biochar‐embedded slow‐release N fertilizer 100% urea‐N (BSRNF‐U100) augmented plant growth to increase grain yield (6610 kg ha −1 ), straw yield (9612 kg ha −1 ) and NUE (12%) in rice.

Synthesis of biochar‐embedded slow‐release nitrogen fertilizers: Mesocosm and field scale evaluation for nitrogen use efficiency, growth and rice yield

Abstract Conservation tillage has been applied in vast semi‐arid regions of the Guanzhong Plain, Northwest China. The tillage effects on soil aggregation, organic carbon ( OC ) stabilization and grain yield on this plain have not been fully elucidated. A 9‐year field experiment was established from 2002 on a silty clay loam soil (Eum‐Orthic Anthrosol) growing winter wheat–maize in a double‐cropping system. Six conservation tillage treatments were applied by different combinations of rotary tillage ( RT ), subsoiling ( SS ) and no‐till ( NT ), with or without finely chopped straw retention. Conventional tillage ( CT ) acted as the control. Results showed that in the surface (0–10 cm) soil, the proportion of water‐stable aggregates ( WSA ) &lt;0.05 mm was 18% less while that for WSA &gt;2 mm was 98% more under NT treatments compared with CT . Additionally, the oxidizable OC content in WSA 0.25–2 mm was 27% greater under NT treatments compared with CT . The OC stocks increased under SS by 17%, RT by 16% and NT by 15% relative to CT . Grain yield (wheat + maize) showed similar increasing trends in all the tillage treatments compared with CT . Both OC stocks and grain yield were larger in treatments with than without straw retentions. These results indicate that NT is beneficial for OC accumulation in WSA but is limited in its ability to improve soil structure in this region. SS plus straw retention (fine‐chopped or as a mulch) is an effective practice to improve soil structural stability, OC accumulation and soil productivity of Eum‐Orthic Anthrosols in Northwest China.

Tillage effects on soil aggregation, organic carbon fractions and grain yield in Eum‐Orthic Anthrosol of a winter wheat–maize double‐cropping system, Northwest China

Soil salinization is a global problem that limits agricultural productivity and sustainable development. As waste‐derived soil amendments, biochar and organic fertilizer have garnered considerable attention for their ability to improve soil physicochemical properties and contribution to agricultural waste resource recovery. However, comparable data on the effects of biochar and organic fertilizers on the physicochemical properties of saline‐alkali soils are lacking. Therefore, we applied biochar (B1: 5 t ha−1year−1; B2: 10 t ha−1year−1; and B3: 20 t ha−1year−1) and organic fertilizer (OF1: 7.5 t ha−1year−1and OF2: 10 t ha−1year−1) to saline‐alkali soil in the Yellow River Delta (YRD), China, continuously for 3 years. Because of the influence of their application on soil fertility and water‐salt status, maize yield increased by 55.01–62.51% and 15.01–26.67% for the biochar and organic fertilizer treated soils, respectively. Biochar and organic fertilizer increased soil water content, Ca2+, Mg2+, total phosphorus, available phosphorus, total nitrogen,‐N,‐N, organic matter, and microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, while decreasing the sodium adsorption ratio and soil pH. Compared with CK, Na+and soil salt content were reduced by 3.83–8.16% and 2.45–12.08%, respectively, under biochar treatments and increased by 2.19–5.34% and 12.95–20.02%, respectively, under organic fertilizer treatments. Principal component analysis showed that biochar was more effective than organic fertilizer in increasing SWC and reducing salinity and Na+. Based on the evidence of this study, biochar presents an eco‐friendly agricultural strategy for improving saline‐alkali soils and increasing maize yield in the YRD.

Application of biochar and organic fertilizer to saline‐alkali soil in the Yellow River Delta: Effects on soil water, salinity, nutrients, and maize yield

Abstract Soil moisture or soil water content (SWC) is crucial for ecosystem functioning, affecting plant health and soil quality. Imbalances in soil moisture can result in reduced fruit production and altered soil biotic and abiotic parameters. Vineyards, especially those located on sloping terrains, or in less fertile soils, are highly susceptible to these issues. An effective nature‐based solution to reduce erosion, improve soil health and increase the biodiversity of soils in vineyards is implementing green cover in the inter‐row spaces. However, trade‐offs related to green cover management need to be carefully evaluated to ensure optimal outcomes. Therefore, we conducted a literature review and a meta‐analysis to analyse how soil water content changes when a green cover (perennial grass or cover crops) management method is used in a vineyard compared to no vegetation or tilled inter‐rows. We found 70 data sets concerning soil water content (SWC) in non‐irrigated vineyards involving tillage and green cover. The data revealed that SWC enhancement depends on the type of green cover, as perennial grass (GC) tended to increase SWC (on average by 15%), whereas cover crops (CC) decreased overall SWC (on average by 20%). Sub‐humid climates showed 35%–73% higher SWC compared to semi‐arid research sites. Temperature zones also revealed that the lower (&lt;12°C) average annual air temperature sites had the highest SWC. In general, the highest average SWC in GC also included the highest soil organic carbon (SOC) content and the lowest average bulk density (1.41 g cm −3 ) in the data set. However, changes in overall bulk density values were not significant among inter‐row soil management. We found that green cover generally increases penetration resistance (22% for GC and 61% for CC) and reduces the saturated hydraulic conductivities of the soils (i.e. 30% for GC and 79% for CC). However, our data set shows high deviations between research sites' values and climatic conditions, and while there are numerous benefits of green cover use in vineyard inter‐rows, site‐specific assessment is highly recommended prior to making changes in management practices.

Inter‐row soil management affecting soil moisture in non‐irrigated vineyard ecosystems: A meta‐analysis

Abstract With the development of urbanization and industrialization, a large number of heavy metal pollutants continue to enter the environment, which has caused severe harm to human health and ecological environment. The heavy metal pollution in soil has been aggravated, and the soil quality has deteriorated seriously. Therefore, cost‐saving and efficient soil remediation technology is imminent. Aiming at resolving a series of soil problems existing in Cadmium‐polluted aeolian sandy soil in Ningdong Energy Base of Ningxia, northwest China, it is very important to explore green and effective bioremediation technology for local ecosystem restoration and healthy and sustainable development. A pot experiment was designed with three different fly ash compound modifiers being added to the Cadmium‐polluted aeolian sandy soil. The perennial ryegrass was used as the test material, and 13 different formula treatments were set. By measuring and analysing soil physical and chemical properties, total Cadmium content, four forms of Cadmium and Cadmium enrichment in various parts of plants, the biological combined remediation effect of fly ash and different material compound modifiers combined with ryegrass were comprehensively evaluated by principal component analysis. Treatment with multiple application of amendments can improve soil water holding capacity and saturated water content, among which the field water holding capacity of FS4 treatment increased the most, increasing by 26.40% compared with without improver (CK), and the saturated water content of the modifier was added with 80% fly ash and 20% organic fertilizer, and the mass ratio of the modifier to soil was 2% (FY2) treatment increased the most, increasing by 20.85% compared with CK. The application of fly ash alone and the application of fly ash apatite compound amendment had no significant effect on soil alkaline nitrogen lysis, while the other two compound modifiers can increase the soil alkali‐hydrolysable nitrogen, and the modifier was added with 80% fly ash and 20% organic fertilizer, and the mass ratio of the modifier to soil was 4% (FY4) treatment increased the most, with an increase of 269.23%. Except for the add 100% fly ash modifier, and the mass ratio of the modifier to soil was 1% (F1) treatment, the dry weight of ryegrass was significantly increased by applying amendments, Although the Cd content of plants decreased, the Cd enrichment of plants increased after the application of the amendments. Applying amendments combined with ryegrass can reduce the total amount of Cd and the proportion of available Cd in soil, and the proportion of available Cd continues to decrease with time. After applying the improver, the biomass and the total amount of heavy metals in ryegrass increased significantly, while the total content of heavy metal Cd and the proportion of available Cd in soil decreased. The ecological remediation effects of FY4, FY2 and FS4 were better, among which FY4 is recommended as the remediation of Cd‐contaminated aeolian sand in Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industry Base.

Study on remediation technology of cadmium pollution in aeolian sand soil in Northwest China: Fly ash combined with ryegrass bioreintervention

Abstract The distinct soil physicochemical properties of saline‐alkali farmland often lead to nutrient deficiencies, particularly in nitrogen. Both straw return and tillage are essential practices for modifying saline‐alkali soils, however, their combined effects on soil properties, nitrogen(N) transformation and absorption, as well the crop yield remain inadequately understood. A field experiment was conducted to assess the cumulative impacts of straw return and tillage (rotary tillage, deep tillage and subsoiling) on soil salinity, nitrogen transformation and maize yield. The results revealed that the soil pH and electrical conductivity (EC) significantly decreased from the 0–20 cm layer to the 20–40 cm layer, indicating that deep tillage was less effective on salt accumulation in the surface soil. The return of straw return and tillage practices significantly influenced the fractions of soil organic nitrogen (SON) and the distribution percentage in total nitrogen. Additionally, these practices notably interacted to increase soil acid insoluble‐N, active SON and stable SON. The combination of straw return and rotary tillage resulted in a higher content of stable SON in the 0–20 cm soil layer. Conversely, the combination of straw return and subsoiling proved to be more effective on soil available N and active SON supplying, as well as maintaining stable nitrogen levels. Furthermore, straw return combined with subsoiling achieved the highest plant nitrogen uptake and yield, with increases of 21.7% and 38.2%, respectively, compared to the rotary without straw. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that stable SON was the primary contributor influencing maize yield, while inorganic N in the 0–20 cm layer and hydrolysable ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 + ‐N) in the 20–40 cm were also the closely related factors. These results provide a new insight for implementing straw return measures to enhance soil quality and increase crop production in saline‐alkali farmland.

Subsoiling with straw return promotes soil nitrogen supply and increase maize yield in saline‐alkaline farmland of the Yellow River Delta

Abstract Increasing bulk density with depth in a peat profile has been seen as key to the formation of peat. Increasing bulk density with depth causing the changes in porosity and permeability of peat soils has been proposed as a mechanism to explain how waterlogged, stagnant conditions persist in peat bog soils. However, a previous study (Clay &amp; Worrall, 2015; Soil Use &amp; Management , 31, 77) observed, in passing, that this was not always the case, but this previous study could not test the nature of the peat bulk density profile. Thus, this present study examined 22 peat cores from 13 locations across climatic gradients of the UK, including valley fens, blanket and raised bogs, and both intact peatlands and former peat extraction sites. At none of the 13 locations was there a significant increase in dry bulk density with depth in the peat profile. The oxidation state of the organic carbon (C ox ) in the peat profile showed no common pattern of change with depth. The only measured property that showed a consistent change down the peat profile among all 13 locations was an increase in the degree of unsaturation of C bonds. The change in degree of unsaturation shows a trend away from vegetation biomass composition and toward lignin‐like compositions with an average rate of change of 0.2 π‐bonds/ka. The measured pattern of bulk density between locations and types of peat shows that peat density reflects the contemporary peat environment, rather than the nature of peat formation. The bulk density profile likely reflects average water table position, as determined by topographic and land‐management factors, with peat compaction and accelerated decomposition within the aerobic zone. The presence of gas bubbles may also contribute to low bulk density at depth. The common bulk density profile found across the UK for peat ecosystems shows that peat formation is not controlled by porosity change but more specifically by water flow and hydraulic conductivity.

Abstract Soil health is a critical component of nature‐based solutions (NbS), underpinning ecosystem multifunctionality and resilience by supporting biodiversity, improving carbon sequestration and storage, regulating water flow and enhancing plant productivity. For this reason, NbS often aim to protect soil health and restore degraded soil. Robust monitoring of soil health is needed to adaptively manage NbS projects, identify best practices and minimize trade‐offs between goals, but soil assessment is often underrepresented in NbS monitoring programmes. This paper examines challenges and opportunities in selecting suitable soil health metrics. We find that standardization can facilitate widespread monitoring of soil health, with benefits for stakeholders and user groups. However, standardization brings key challenges, including the complexity and local variability of soil systems and the diverse priorities, skills and resources of stakeholders. To address this, we propose a flexible, interdisciplinary approach combining soil science, ecology and socio‐economic insights. We introduce an interactive tool to help users select suitable soil and biodiversity metrics, which are context and scale‐specific, and suggest avenues for future research. We conclude that integrating soil health into NbS through new and improved monitoring approaches, newly available datasets, supportive policies and stakeholder collaboration can enhance the resilience and effectiveness of NbS, contributing significantly to global sustainability goals.
