ABSTRACT The present study examined the influence of cultural background on university students' experience of loneliness. The total of 966 students, 484 from Canada and 482 from the Czech Republic participated in the study. They answered a 30 item yes/no questionnaire composed of five subscales, namely: Emotional distress, Social inadequacy and alienation, Growth and discovery, Interpersonal isolation, and Self-alienation. Results revealed a rather consistent pattern of differences between the two cultures, with Canadian students scoring higher than Czechs on all five subscales. First year students were compared to second to fourth year students. No significant differences were found in either of the countries.

The Experience of Loneliness in University: A Cross-Cultural Study

This study examined the relationships between social loneliness, emotional loneliness, social anxiety and peer victimisation among 390 seventh- through ninth-grade secondary students. Data were collected in the fall and spring of the school year. Path analyses revealed that feelings of loneliness (both social and emotional) increased adolescents’ peer victimisation experiences, however social loneliness was associated with higher levels of peer victimisation than emotional loneliness in seventh and eighth grade. Early experiences of social anxiety significantly predicted bullying victimisation. Implications for research and intervention programmes are discussed.

Indigenous youth engagement in research: a scoping review of community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) in Canada and the USA

Paranoid thoughts are relatively common in adolescents, but little is known about the factors that predict and attenuate paranoia in this group. The current study examined the effect of everyday discrimination, minority group endorsement and loneliness on paranoia in an international sample (n = 462) of adolescents from the UK and U.S.A. We tested a moderation model to determine (1) whether minority group endorsement and severity of discrimination independently predict paranoia; (2) if discrimination and minority group endorsement interact to predict paranoia; and, if so, (3) whether the impact of this interaction varies depending on level of loneliness. Regression analyses revealed everyday discrimination independently predicted paranoia. Minority group endorsement did not interact with discrimination as expected, and instead had a significant, independent effect on paranoia. Loneliness independently predicted paranoia and moderated the effect of discrimination on paranoia. The findings highlight the impact of adverse social contexts on paranoia in adolescents.

Discrimination, minority group endorsement and paranoia in adolescents: the moderating role of loneliness

This study determined the Quality of life of Palestinian university students and its associated factors. A total of 173 students were included in this cross-sectional study. The collected data were; QoL, lifestyle, dietary pattern, and demographic data. The results revealed, the physical domain was associated with younger age, screen time and physical activity, while study time were associated with the environmental domain. Students' sleep problems were significantly associated with lower QoL scores in both physical and psychological domains. Less studying, napping during the days and more family income improved university students QoL. In conclusion, sociodemographic and life style factors were associated with students' QoL Exploring the factors that influence the QoL will aid in the development of supportive programmes and policies to improve the QOL of students that will shape their country's future. further effort is needed to establish programmes to promote knowledge about lifestyle and QoL among university students.

Evidence about the transition experiences of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) into adolescence is lacking in low-income country settings, even though most children with ASD live in these countries. This study explored the challenges of transitioning to adolescence among children with ASD based on data from purposely selected samples of 11 parents and six teachers. The findings showed that children with ASD experienced various maturation-related sexual, behavioural, and menarche challenges in their transition to adolescence. Children with ASD also have high support needs for understanding and managing their sexual feelings, may engage in socio-culturally inappropriate sexual activities, and are faced with a range of behavioural challenges. The findings further showed that girls with ASD have hygiene and sanitation management challenges. We suggest awareness-raising and skills-training for parents and teachers and psychosocial intervention for children with ASD. We also strongly recommend future studies and interventions use strengths-based perspectives.
