The conventional picking robots suffered from low picking throughput due to a large amount of computation of the object-pose-estimation algorithm which is called iterative-closest-point (ICP) algorithm. This article presents an field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based ICP accelerator, which achieves 11.7-times-faster object-pose estimation by a picking robot compared with the state-of-the-art technique based on K-D-tree <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">k -nearest neighbor (NN) search and four-core CPU. To accelerate the ICP, both algorithm-level and hardware-level techniques have been proposed and developed. The former is a hierarchical-graph-based <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">k -NN search enabling simultaneous acquisition of plural neighboring points. The latter is a sorting-network-based circuit implemented on an system on a chip (SoC)-FPGA. In addition, dynamic structural reconfiguration between the two key functionalities (graph generation and nearest neighbor search) is explored by utilizing the partial reconfiguration capability of FPGA to save the required hardware resource. Experiments of the proposed FPGA-based ICP accelerator using Amazon Picking Challenge data sets have confirmed that the object-pose estimation by ICP takes only 0.72 s at the power consumption of 4.2 W.

An SoC-FPGA-Based Iterative-Closest-Point Accelerator Enabling Faster Picking Robots

Insufficient damping and inertia are the one of the most tough challenges in the grid-connected power system with high penetration of renewable energy resources. Damping correction loop of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) connected to weak damping and high R/X ratio condition is introduced to solve the issues. First, the scheme of the proposed control is implemented in various system operating conditions, and the small-signal model of the proposed control is established. Subsequently, the influence of the damping correction loop on small-signal stability is demonstrated by Bode diagram analysis, and the interaction between reshaped VSG control and power compensation capacity is clarified in three aspects of damping, inertia and synchronization. Furthermore, the optimal design of additional damping and inertia support is provided to suppress the subsynchronous frequency fluctuation of the system, the proposed control method can be easily implemented by directly inserting it into active power control loop of VSG. Finally, the efficiency of the damping correction loop is verified by experiments, the results indicate that 70% reduction of maximum frequency deviation with the proposed control under 20% active power reference step.

A Generic Power Compensation Control for Grid Forming Virtual Synchronous Generator With Damping Correction Loop

The power coupling of the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) in the grid-connected mode may aggravate power oscillation because of a resistance-inductive line. In order to deal with this issue, this research study proposes an adaptive and optimal approach to controlling VSG via reinforcement learning and adaptive dynamic programming (ADP). It derives the linear and nonlinear hybrid equations of the VSG power considering the case where the line impedance is uncertain. The nonlinear part is a disturbance, and the linear ADP solves the optimal feedback control and compensation controller, eliminating the interaction between the active power and reactive power. Also, the proposed method utilizes value iteration and is data-driven. Thus, it does not rely on an initial stability control gain and an accurate dynamic model during the learning process. Comparative experiments reveal the effectiveness of the proposed method and validate the practicability of the methodology introduced; in addition, comparative simulations present the superiority of the proposed method in power systems based on synchronous generators.

An Effective PQ-Decoupling Control Scheme Using Adaptive Dynamic Programming Approach to Reducing Oscillations of Virtual Synchronous Generators for Grid Connection With Different Impedance Types

A shunt active power filter (SAPF) can interact with the nonlinear load and grid impedance, which may lead to unexpected harmonic oscillation. To describe the interaction, this article builds the interaction model including the source-current-detected SAPF, nonlinear load, and grid impedance. The interaction model reveals that the harmonic oscillation is prone to occur when the passive resonant frequency from grid impedance and nonlinear loads gets close to the harmonic frequency compensated by SAPF. This kind of harmonic oscillation is normally unpredictable because grid impedance and state of the nonlinear load continuously change. To cope with it, this article proposes a harmonic oscillation observation and adaptive stabilization strategy, which is implemented by monitoring and controlling the phase trajectory of the grid harmonic current through adjusting the phase and emergency damping factor of the harmonic resonant controllers in SAPF. This strategy has low requirement on real-time calculation and does not affect the dynamic response of the SAPF. In the end, the effectiveness of the stabilization strategy is verified by experiment results.

An Adaptive Stabilization Strategy for Harmonic Oscillation of SAPF Interacted With Nonlinear Load and Grid Impedance

In this paper, restorations for both voltage and frequency in the droop-controlled inverter-based islanded microgrid (MG) are addressed. A distributed finite-time control approach is used in the voltage restoration which enables the voltages at all the distributed generations (DGs) to converge to the reference value in finite time, and thus, the voltage and frequency control design can be separated. Then, a consensus-based distributed frequency control is proposed for frequency restoration, subject to certain control input constraints. Our control strategies are implemented on the local DGs, and thus, no central controller is required in contrast to existing control schemes proposed so far. By allowing these controllers to communicate with their neighboring controllers, the proposed control strategy can restore both voltage and frequency to their respective reference values while having accurate real power sharing, under a sufficient local stability condition established. An islanded MG test system consisting of four DGs is built in MATLAB to illustrate our design approach, and the results validate our proposed control strategy.

Distributed Secondary Voltage and Frequency Restoration Control of Droop-Controlled Inverter-Based Microgrids

Data-driven learning-based control methods, such as reinforcement learning (RL), have become increasingly popular with recent proliferation of the machine learning paradigm. These methods address the parameter sensitiveness and unmodeled dynamics in model-based controllers, such as finite control-set model predictive control. RL agents are typically utilized in simulation environments, where they are allowed to explore multiple "unsafe" actions during the learning process. However, this type of learning is not applicable to online self-learning of controllers in physical power converters, because unsafe actions would damage them. To address this, this letter proposes a safe online RL-based control framework to autonomously find the optimal switching strategy for the power converters, while ensuring system safety during the entire self-learning process. The proposed safe online RL-based control is validated in a practical testbed on a two-level voltage source converter system, and the results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Safety-Enhanced Self-Learning for Optimal Power Converter Control

A high input voltage converter with a wide input voltage range is crucially required in long-distance submarine power system. However, the concise implementation of high input voltage and wide input voltage ranges remains a challenge for existing converter. In this article, a serial hybrid-clamped three-level half-bridge <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">LLC resonant converter is proposed. The proposed converter can withstand high input voltage by connecting two hybrid-clamped three-level half-bridges in series. All the operating states of the converter are analyzed, five modulation modes are presented, four of which are controlled by pulse frequency modulation, and the other is controlled by changing the equivalent phase shift angle. The five modulation modes cover different voltage gain ranges, and can be combined to achieve wide input voltage regulation while maintaining soft switching of switching devices. The experimental prototype with 1 kW power level and 250 V–2 kV input voltage range is built to verify the wide voltage regulation rang soft-switching performance of the proposed converter.

Serial Hybrid-Clamped Three-Level Half-Bridge LLC Resonant Converter With Wide Input Voltage Range

Inverse coupled current doubler rectifier (ICCDR) has been applied in high output current scenarios due to its higher current gain and rectification efficiency than diode full-bridge rectifier. However, existing analysis about ICCDR has nonnegligible errors because the inductance effect of a transformer is simply ignored. In this letter, the inductance effect and energy storage-release process of transformer are taken into account innovatively. Then, an accurate input impedance model of ICCDR is first established via modal analysis, whose equivalent inductor leads to poor constant current effect within large load range. Based on this input impedance model, a novel compensation method, which can eliminate the impact of its equivalent inductor and optimize constant current output effect by tuning primary capacitance, is provided. The proposed S-S compensated inductive power transfer system applying ICCDR achieves zero phase angle and shows a ±5% output current change rate within 8:1 load resistance range. The analysis is verified by a 20-A output prototype, which shows a peak efficiency of 95.6%.

A Novel Impedance Compensation Method for IPT System Applying Inverse Coupled Current Doubler Rectifier

This article proposes a dual-VSI DFIG-dc topology for high-voltage dc-grid applications. The dc-links of stator-VSI and rotor-VSI are connected in series to create high-voltage dc-link, eliminating or reducing the need of dc–dc converters. Further, the proposed topology is emulated as a voltage generation system in this article. An identical control technique for the stator-VSI and rotor-VSI is presented, which regulates the total series-connected dc-link voltage and supplies the required power at dc-link. This control technique incorporates the voltage balancing feature by employing two voltage equalizers (VEs) to maintain equal dc-link voltages of stator-VSI and rotor-VSI. The proposed control scheme has been verified for the proposed series-connected dual-VSI DFIG-dc topology with experimental results.

As Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and inertial measurement units (IMUs) are gradually emerging as ubiquitous, utilizing redundant sensors to achieve accurate and robust large-scale navigation holds great promise. In this article, we propose a tightly coupled precise point positioning-real-time kinematic (PPP-RTK)/IMU system with multiple homogeneous sensors to enable high-precision and high-availability vehicle navigation. In it, a stacked Kalman filter is employed to fuse raw pseudorange and carrier phase measurements from all GNSS terminals, driven by a core IMU designated randomly. In PPP-RTK processing, precise atmospheric and bias corrections from a GNSS server are leveraged to quickly resolve carrier phase ambiguity, thus ensuring centimeter-level positioning. Besides, rotation and translation constraints from redundant IMUs are imposed on the estimation pipeline to further improve the state estimation. Real-world experiments show that the proposed method can achieve an availability of 98.7% (horizontal position error <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$&lt; $</tex-math></inline-formula> 0.1 m) in a half-open-sky case, which is far better than the state-of-the-art methods. Also, redundant sensors not only contribute significantly to the integer ambiguity resolution, but are also able to promise continuous state estimation in the case of sensor failure.
