The Journal of Hazardous Materials publishes comprehensive research papers, reviews, and case studies aimed at enhancing our understanding of the hazards and risks posed by certain materials to human health and the environment, as well as methods for managing and controlling these hazards and associated risks. The editors particularly welcome suggestions for review articles. To limit the scope, the following areas are excluded: non-hazardous materials, occupational health and safety, standard municipal and wastewater treatment processes, including nutrient removal, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and the manufacture of explosives.

The consumption of lithium-ion batteries raises raw material demand for and the pressure on ecological sustainability. Metals can be recovered in shorter paths while considerably boosting material use, hence selective recycling of specific elements is becoming a hotspot. This paper proposes a thermally-driven closed-loop recycling process for scrap LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathodes, in which Li is efficiently extracted by water leaching. Then, by combining the leaching residue with Li2CO3, a solid-phase synthesis is carried out, with Li being targeted to heal into Ni-Co-Mn-O to construct the layered structure. The electrochemical performance of the resynthesized cathode material is comparable to that of the commercial LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) material. During the thermal-driven conversion, solid-state processes can be observed. To ensure charge conservation, Li+ in the unstable layered structure is released and mixed with SO42- to produce Li2SO4, and lattice oxygen escapes and transforms with Ni2+ to generate NiO. For the resynthesized process, the spherical shape of Ni-Co-Mn-O is largely retained. Notably, sulfur is remained in the form of SO42- throughout the closed-loop process and is therefore free of contamination. The thermal-driven conversion recycling process revealed in this study will encourage researchers to ensure more efforts in efficient and selective recovery for sustainable energy storage of rechargeable batteries.

Closed-loop selective recycling process of spent LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 batteries by thermal-driven conversion.

As emerging pollutants, microplastics have become pervasive on a global scale, inflicting significant harm upon ecosystems. However, the impact of these microplastics on the symbiotic relationship between protists and bacteria remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms through which nano- and microplastics of varying sizes and concentrations influence the amoeba-bacterial symbiotic system. The findings reveal that nano- and microplastics exert deleterious effects on the adaptability of the amoeba host, with the magnitude of these effects contingent upon particle size and concentration. Furthermore, nano- and microplastics disrupt the initial equilibrium in the symbiotic relationship between amoeba and bacteria, with nano-plastics demonstrating a reduced ability to colonize symbiotic bacteria within the amoeba host when compared to their microplastic counterparts. Moreover, nano- and microplastics enhance the relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes and heavy metal resistance genes in the bacteria residing within the amoeba host, which undoubtedly increases the potential transmission risk of both human pathogens and resistance genes within the environment. In sum, the results presented herein provide a novel perspective and theoretical foundation for the study of interactions between microplastics and microbial symbiotic systems, along with the establishment of risk assessment systems for ecological environments and human health.

Nano- and microplastics drive the dynamic equilibrium of amoeba-associated bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes.

The recovery of palladium from spent auto-exhaust catalysts (SAE-catalysts) is of great significance for resource sustainability. Herein, we proposed an efficient closed-loop leaching and recovery method for palladium from SAE-catalysts using iodotrihalide ionic liquids (ILs). Recovery design was explored aimed at green leaching and process simplification. Iodotrihalide ILs exhibited exceptional performance in terms of leaching efficiency (99.1%), selectivity (selectivity > 6.8 ×103) and reusability (over 6 cycles). The mechanism study revealed that excellent leaching performance was attributed to the redox and complexation. Additionally, the chemical reaction-controlled model was best suited to describe the leaching process. Notably, under the optimal conditions determined by the response surface methodology, a high-purity Pd(II) solution (purity > 99.8%) was obtained. More significantly, it was ideal for practical applications due to the low-viscosity (36.0 cP), mild (55 °C) and one-step leaching and recovery. In conclusion, this work provides an eco-friendly method for recovering palladium from SAE-catalysts with its non-high corrosiveness and low environmental impact.

Closed-loop process for selective leaching and recovery of palladium from spent auto-exhaust catalysts using iodotrihalide ionic liquids.

In this article, the removal of cephalexin (CFX) antibiotic from non-clinical environment is reviewed. Adsorption and photocatalytic degradation techniques are widely used to remove CFX from waters and wastewaters, the combination of these methods is becoming more common for CFX removal. The treatment methods of CFX has not been reviewed before, the present article aim is to organize the scattered available information regarding sustainable approaches for CFX removal from non-clinical environment. These include adsorption by nanoparticles, bacterial biomass, biodegradation by bacterial enzymes and the photocatalysis using different catalysts and Photo-Fenton photocatalysis. The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) appeared to have high potential for CFX degradation. It is evident from the recently papers reviewed that the effective methods could be used in place of commercial activated carbon. The widespread uses of photocatalytic degradation for CFX remediation are strongly recommended due to their engineering applicability, technical feasibility, and high effectiveness. The adsorption capacity of the CFX is ranging from 7 mg CFX g-1 of activated carbon nanoparticles to 1667 mg CFX g-1 of Nano-zero-valent iron from Nettle. In contrast, the photo-degradation was 45% using Photo-Fenton while has increased to 100% using heterogeneous photoelectro-Fenton (HPEF) with UVA light using chalcopyrite catalyst.
