The CR-Express has enhanced international container transport services and altered the competitive landscape of mega liner shipping companies (MLSCs) in the Eurasia container transport market. Given the continuous growth of the CR-Express's market share, this study establishes a novel evaluation system to assess the competitiveness of the MLSCs, measuring their performance in the Eurasia container transport market and analyzing how their competitiveness transforms when they offer CR-Express service. To accurately calculate the four competitiveness indicators—namely spatial coverage, level of route customization, directness of shipping, and alternative routes—we constructed complex networks representing the Eurasia container transport system of the evaluated MLSCs across various topologies and conducted complex network analysis. The evaluation results indicate that Maersk, CMA CGM, and COSCO are the three most competitive liner shipping companies in the Eurasia container transport market before Maersk and COSCO's involving in the CR-Express. The CR-Express has significantly bolstered the competitiveness of Maersk and COSCO, with COSCO surpassing Maersk and claiming the top globally after offering CR-Express service. However, the CR-Express, launched incrementally by the MLSCs, have not been seamlessly integrated into their overall maritime shipping networks, resulting in a sparse overall container transport network.

In global maritime safety, the efficiency of Port State Control (PSC) is paramount in ensuring the safety of sea. Facing the challenge of effectively identifying high-risk vessels, this study innovatively enhances PSC inspection efficiency. This study aims to reduce maritime accidents by significantly improving the efficiency and accuracy of detained vessels prediction through multi-source data fusion technology and the enhanced AdaBoost algorithm. AdaBoost, improves model accuracy by combining multiple weak classifiers. By comprehensively analyzing ship inspection records from 2015 to 2022 across various Chinese ports, combined with additional vessel information, this research constructs a developed predictive model to forecast the likelihood of ships being detained by PSC in Chinese ports. The proposed model successfully identified numerous non-detained and detained ships and achieved highly satisfactory predictive results on the training dataset. Through in-depth analysis of crucial evaluation metrics such as precision, recall, F1 score, and ROC, this study provides strong technical support for accurately identifying high-risk vessels that play a vital role in enhancing maritime safety. Moreover, our findings offer valuable insights for port managers to optimize ship selection processes and for shipping companies to improve operational efficiency, having a profound impact on the safety and development of the maritime transportation industry.

Maritime safety through multi-source data fusion: an AdaBoost-based approach for predictive ship detention by port state control

Gender imbalance and equality have been highlighted in the global seafarer market. Taiwan relies heavily on shipping development and three container shipping companies (Evergreen, Yang Ming, Wai Hai Line) in Taiwan are ranked as top 11 in the world. To highlight the important contribution of women seafarers in the maritime industry, and add to the growing body of research in this area, this paper adopted in-depth interviews (n = 30) with both female (n = 24) and male (n = 6) seafarers to explore their perceptions of women seafarers regarding policies, benefits, and challenges. Key themes were barriers to employment such as company policies but also perceived benefits of employing women such as their ability with specific tasks such as administration and conciliation, aspects not highlighted before. Also, and uniquely, we identify a significant obstacle to achieving gender equality, and that is that the data gathered was biased; often delivered through the paradigm of the very problem itself: gender inequality and a male-biased environment. Nevertheless, and through identifying this obstacle, we make suggestions for engaging with and overcoming such biases in future work, and also help increase gender equality in the industry in line with United Nations Development Goals.

Women seafarers in Taiwan: policies, benefits, challenges, and bias in the data

Green port development benefits the port communities but might make shippers in the hinterland face positive or negative externalities. Those externalities to shippers might be amplified or reduced by congestion, which more likely happens when ports have a farther hinterland location. Therefore, the location-based externalities should be considered when decide green effort in competing ports. In this paper, we establish a competition-based green effort decision-making model in different scenarios, focusing on the impact of location-based externalities. By comparing the green effort and welfare under different investment modes and different market power structure, we discuss the impacts of location-based externalities and the motivation for joint-investment in green port development. We find that (1) The positive location-based externalities decrease the port profit due to the non-exclusivity of green port services. Public port governance mode and the dominant market position can alleviate port's losses. (2) The negative location-based externalities make smaller port contribute more green effort than the larger port. (3) As the positive location-based externality increase gradually, the joint-investment between ports with similar size achieves lower total welfare than the separate-investment. Our findings suggest the necessity for flexible adjustment of green port plans to mitigate conflicting interests between ports and hinterlands.

Investigating interaction between the port-city relationship and the urban road network structure: a case study of China

The article explores the value-creation potential of digitalisation in RoPax port ecosystems. While digitalisation offers the possibility to overcome fragmentation in logistics and optimise business operations, its impact on the value creation within such port ecosystems remains underexplored. Understanding the complexities of value creation in this context necessitates adopting an ecosystem lens and acknowledging business actors' interdependencies. The study is a single-case study of digitalisation efforts in a RoPax port in Northern Europe, supported by the benchmarking of five comparable ports. It develops a categorisation framework for digital solutions in RoPax ports to analyse which capabilities these solutions offer and how they lead to value creation for port authorities or other actors. This framework is based on the capabilities of such solutions and the digitalisation level they address. We also discern their value creation potential and mechanisms and highlight the differences between solutions that are implemented or being proposed. The framework serves as a reference point for solution providers to assess the role and value of their offerings, while also offering guidance to port authorities and stakeholders in identifying emerging technological opportunities. This research contributes to a deeper comprehension of digitalisation's role in driving value creation in RoPax port ecosystems.
