Professional life skills' training is considered to be an important element of the veterinary curriculum by educators across the globe. Within the Bachelor of Veterinary Science programme at the University of Queensland, opportunities for the development of professional attributes exist throughout the curriculum, with dedicated professional studies courses delivered in Years 1 and 5. The final year course covers a range of topics related to the professional roles and responsibilities of veterinarians and the variety of non-technical abilities relevant for practise. In 2007, this course included lectures, small group tutorials and a self-directed research project. Student acceptance of content is thought to be a potential limitation for teaching within the discipline of professional studies. Therefore, a key objective of this study was to investigate student perceptions of the importance and relevance of topics covered within the lecture series. Student responses to a questionnaire were analysed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results showed that students appreciated the importance of content covered, believed that the lectures helped them to understand their veterinary role and responsibilities, and were, on the whole, enjoyable. Age, gender and intended field of practice was not correlated student perceptions.

This report describes an unusual manifestation of congenital hypothyroidism in a kitten presented for an ileocolic intussusception and chronic constipation. A ten-week-old, undersized, entire male mixed-breed kitten presented for abdominal pain and distension. Radiography and abdominal ultrasound confirmed a small intestinal intussusception. Following successful surgical reduction of the intussusception, the kitten continued to suffer from chronic constipation that was nonresponsive to medical management. Serum free-thyroxine concentration was consistent with hypothyroidism. Administration of levothyroxine sodium resulted in rapid resolution of the constipation. The kitten's mentation and activity levels improved and it grew and gained weight, reaching a normal physiologic weight by 12 months of age. Feline congenital hypothyroidism was the most likely cause of the ileocolic intussusception in this kitten. Underlying endocrine dysfunction should be considered when presented with an undersized kitten with cretinoid features, disproportionate dwarfism, mental dullness and chronic constipation.

Intestinal intussusception in a 10-week-old kitten with congenital hypothyroidism

A historical cohort of 126 dogs with acute pancreatitis were reviewed with the major objective of documenting the frequency and associated risk of hyperbilirubinaemia for mortality.The medical records were accessed and signalment, history, diagnostic findings, treatment and outcome was recorded. The data was summarised and the association of hyperbilirubinaemia with death was assessed using Cox proportional hazards ratio estimation. Hyperbilirubinaemia was documented in 42/126 dogsand 30/42 (71%) dogs had ultrasound findingsconsistent with extrahepatic biliary obstruction. Overall, 19/126 (15%) dogs died including 12/42 dogs with hyperbilirubinaemia. All dogs with hyperbilirubinaemia received medical treatment and 34 survived more than 20 days. In the survivors, hyperbilirubinaemia resolved after three to 35 days. Hyperbilirubinaemia was a significant risk factor for death (hazard ratio 4.7,95% confidence interval 1.7-2.8, P = 0.03). This study showed hyperbilirubinaemia is a complication of acute pancreatitis and in this cohort, was a risk factor for death. Despite this risk, most dogs managed with prolonged medical treatment survived and had resolution of hyperbilirubinaemia.

The present review assesses the methods for diagnosis of proteinuria, evaluates the need for treatment, and critically appraises the evidence for medical and dietary therapies. A search of scientific databases was conducted to source peer-reviewed articles. These were assigned a level of evidence and a grade of recommendation based on National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines. Grades of recommendation were: grade A, excellent; grade B, good; grade C, satisfactory; and grade D, poor. 

Sulphosalicyclic acid tests and urine dipsticks have high sensitivity and are good for screening for proteinuria in dogs. At low levels of proteinuria, and in cats, more specific assays are recommended. Urine protein to creatinine ratios have high specificity and are used for quantification of proteinuria. Pooled and averaged samples are recommended over single samples. 

Proteinuria in dogs and cats has detrimental effects and veterinarians are recommended to pursue treatment (grade B). Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors are the most supported therapeutic and should be first line treatment (grade A). Angiotensin receptor blockers (grade C), combination therapy (grade D) and aldosterone receptor antagonists (grade D) are lacking evidence in dogs and cats with proteinuria. The presence of adverse effects in people for the latter two should discourage their use. While renal diets provide overall benefits (grade B), the evidence for their effect on proteinuria is weak (grade D).
