Traditional markets in Malang Regency are divided into four classes with particular classifications.The traditional market solid waste research aims to show the environmental impact of solid waste management efforts using life cycle assessment (LCA) and selected scenarios to reduce solid waste sustainably.The planned management follows four scenarios: Scenario 0 represents the baseline scenario.Scenario 1 assumes that non-composted solid waste recycling is carried out.Scenario 2 assumes that composting takes place.Finally, Scenario 3 assumes that non-composted solid waste recycling and composting are integratively carried out by building a reduced reuse recycle solid waste treatment facility (TPS 3R) near the market.The environmental impact analysis was carried out with various impact categories (carcinogens, respiratory organics, respiratory inorganics, climate change, radiation, ozone layer, ecotoxicity, acidification/eutrophication, land use, minerals, and fossil fuels).The results show that the smallest environmental impact is in Scenario 3 in most classes, namely the scenario where noncomposted solid waste was integratively recycled and composted.

Life cycle assessment of traditional market solid waste management in Malang Regency, Indonesia

Phytochelatins (PCs) exist widely in plants and are closely related to plant resistance to heavy metals (HMs).Glutathione (GSH) and nonprotein thiols (NPTs) are the major components of PCs.This study investigates the role of the PCs of Cladophora rupestris in Pb 2+ accumulation and detoxification.The distribution of Pb 2+ in the PCs of C. rupestris was studied.FTIR and XPS are used to characterize the chelating power of Pb 2+ with PCs in C. rupestris.The curve fitting of the secondary protein structure is used to identify the functional groups with Pb 2+ .Results showed that the content of Pb 2+ in the PCs of C. rupestris increased with an increase in Pb 2+ stress.Pb content increased to 352 and 314 mg/kg in NPTs and GSH, respectively, when Pb stress concentration reached 7.5 mg/dm 3 .The Pb 2+ fraction of C. rupestris PCs reached a maximum of 10.8 and 9.3% in NPTs and GSH, respectively.The Pb 2+ uptake by GSH and NPTs was 40-48% and 52-60%, respectively.Pb 2+ bound with the PCs of C. rupestris, forming complexes that contained Pb-OOC, Pb-C=O, CO-Pb, -N=Pb, Pb-NH2, Pb-O, Pb-N-, Pb-C-, Pb-S, and Pb 2+ with multiple groups of PCs as bridging ligand atoms.

The fouling phenomenon of porous polymeric ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membranes was investigated during the purification of solutions containing surfactants.The effects of surfactant type, concentration, and membrane pore size on process performance were evaluated.The highest intensity of membrane fouling was caused by micellar solutions, resulting from the coexistence of monomeric and aggregated surfactant forms.A significant role of hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions between surfactants and the polymer surface in membrane fouling was proved.Interpretation of the theoretical fouling model showed that cake formation is the dominant fouling mechanism of membranes.

Parathion methyl is a widely used organophosphorus pesticide (OPs).OPs in agroecosystems cause severe health and environmental effects.In this study, the Pilobolus inoculum's ability to remove parathion methyl in microsystems corn crop was evaluated at the laboratory level.Agricultural soils containing Pilobolus inoculum were exposed to 50 µg/dm 3 of parathion methyl.The results showed that Pilobolus inoculum can eliminate parathion methyl in 80% of microsystems, and positively influences 20% of the physiological processes of corn plants.This research into the field of myco-remediation widens the use of little-studied fungal species such as Pilobolus to remove pesticides.

Biological translocation of parathion methyl by Pilobolus sp. in corn microsystems

Toxic waste, soil, and ash samples were collected in the landfill (solid environmental hot spots) near the Trepça complex, New Co Ferronickeli, and Kosovo thermal power plants.They were analyzed by the ICP-OES method to measure the concentration of some toxic metals.The pollutant with the highest mean concentration (in an acidic medium) was Fe (36 400.0), followed by Mn (8683.0),Cr (6575.0),As (4739.0),Pb (3364.0),Zn (2394.0),Ni (922.6),Cu (297.6),Co (46.6), and Cd (61.8) (all concentrations in mg/kg).Three pollution indices were used such as the geoaccumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CFi), and pollution load index (PLI).The CFi values determined for Fe, Mn, Cr, As, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, Co, and Cd indicated high contamination.In all soil samples, the PLI values showed the presence of soil pollution.

Removing nutrients from wastewater is essential because high concentrations in aquatic systems lead to severe eutrophication problems, the most common impairment of surface waters such as lakes and oceans. Total phosphorus (TP) and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) were removed from mixed wastewater using an aerobic granular sludge process in a sequencing batch reactor (AGS-SBR). An artificial neural network (ANN) and response surface methodology (RSM) were applied to evaluate the main parameters of the process. For TKN removal, only cycle time (CT) (0.0475) was a significant variable, achieving removal efficiencies of up to 81%. In TP case removal, two parameters, VER and AR, were substantial for this process, completing elimination efficiencies of around 40%. On comparing the models with statistical indices, ANN coupled with the moth-flame optimization algorithm (ANN-MFO) demonstrated higher performance with an adjusted R2 (0.9866) for the case of TP removal and (0.9519) for TKN removal.

The sediments of the Lepenc River in Kosovo have been investigated, by using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique. The concentrations of such metals as As, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Nb, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sr, Th, Ti, V, Y, Zn and Zr were analyzed in six different locations. The most of metals analyzed had median values higher than those in European steam sediment. Basic statistics, Pearson’s correlation and cluster analysis were performed to better explain the data of metal concentrations in the river sediments. Four groups of elements were identified by cluster analysis based on their geogenic or anthropogenic origin. The sediments were mostly contaminated with potentially toxic elements (As, Cr, Cu and Ni). The contamination factors (CF) for different metals and locations ranged from 1.8 to 5.33, and the pollution load index (PLI) from 2.42 to 3.09. Nickel and chromium contributed the most to sediment pollution, and their geoaccumulation indices (Igeo) in all locations were higher than 1. The most polluted sediment samples were in two locations, in the vicinity of a nickel mine and a cement factory.

Pollution indicators of heavy metals in the sediments of the Lepenc river in Kosovo

Uncontrolled dumping of open landfills has been becoming a significant threat to developing countries. The areas where solid wastes are stored increase the risk of groundwater and environmental pollution. Groundwater pollution causes poisoning and even death in terms of public health. This study investigated the impact area of pollutants that pose environmental risks in the Hamamboğazı (Aksaray Turkey) landfill area. Six vertical electrical sounding (VES) measurements were made in the study area. The direction of the leakage water is southwest, and the penetration depth is 15 m. The electrical conductivity reaching high values such as 4160–7900 μS/cm shows the polluting effect of the leachate. Heavy metals detected in leachate were Cu (0.183 mg/dm 3 ), Pb (0.234 mg/dm 3 ), Zn (0.33 mg/dm 3 ), and Fe (3.179 mg/dm 3 ).

The adsorption effect of two modified kaolin-chitosan composites prepared by different modification methods (cross-linking method (GL-CS) and click reaction method (TGL-CS)) on lead ion wastewater was studied. The structure of TGL-CS has a denser pore structure than that of GL-CS, and the distribution of adsorption sites is more uniform. At 25 °C, pH 4, the adsorbent dosage of 0.05 g/dm3, reaction time of 4 h, and initial mass concentration of 150 mg/dm3, TGL-CS had the best effect on Pb2+ wastewater treatment, and the adsorption capacity was 76.159 mg/g. The adsorption studies of kinetic, thermodynamic, and ther-modynamic parameters showed that the adsorption on GL-CS and TGL-CS was best described by the Langmuir model. The adsorption mechanism is mainly chemical adsorption. The adsorption process is spontaneous. These results show that the adsorbent prepared by click reaction has obvious advantages, with more adsorption capacity and adsorption sites, faster adsorption rate, and better application potential.

Comparative study on the adsorption of lead ions by kaolin loaded chitosan by different modification methods

There is a connection between noise reduction and roadside tree plantation. Understanding how prop-erties of trees (density, height, leaf type, crown spread, etc.) impact noise attenuation is crucial. The current study measured and compared the roadside traffic noise at various locations (with/without trees/plantations) in selected Multan areas. Eight locations (Bahawalpur Road, Expressway, Vehari Road, Bosan Road, Eidgah Road, Masoom Shah Road, Piran-Gaib Road, and Khanewal Road) throughout Multan City. A digital sound level meter (MS-6701) was used to measure the noise levels during months of winter and summer seasons. During field visits, the tree type, leaf type, average height, density, canopy crown spread, and presence of any vegetation in each designated area were noted. The sound pressure data was compared with the noise level standards as recommended by Punjab Environment Quality Standards. A clear reduction in sound levels can be observed with trees. The tree plantings reduced the noise only on the Express-way (65 dbA) and Piran Gaib Road (64 dbA) in May 2022. In June 2022, the trees were only beneficial in reducing noise near Piran Gaib Road (64 dbA). Due to tree plantation, the maximum reduction of 11 dbA was reported in June 2022 at Eig Gah Road, followed by a 10.1 dbA reduction in December 2021 at Khanewal Road. Maximum noise reduction was observed at the Expressway and Piran Gaib Roads, where Pongamia pinata and Melia azedarach are planted along with some grass. The comparison clearly showed a reduction in noise due to roadside plantations. Tree plantation helps improve the area’s overall look and enhances aesthetic sense and scenic beauty.
