The ethical dilemmas of using animals as in vivo models in preclinical and
 clinical examinations have been increasingly present in recent decades.
 Small laboratory animals (rats, rabbits) will continue to be used because
 they are cost-effective and permit the formation of statistically testable
 cohort groups; a task that, for financial, maintenance and care reasons, is
 almost prohibitive for larger animals. Technological advances in the
 production of new biomaterials for clinical use are enormous, but screening
 tests and methods used to assess biocompatibility lag behind these advances.
 The assessment of biological responses is slow and based on millennial
 recovery mechanisms in eukaryotic organisms. Therefore, the goal of
 researchers in this field is to re-evaluate old methods of biocompatibility
 assessment and introduce new methods of evaluation, especially for in vivo
 testing. In that sense, a revision of the ISO standards was planned and
 conducted in 2017, which insisted on cytotoxicity testing in cell lines and
 produced concrete proposals on how biocompatibility should be quantified. In
 vivo biocompatibility evaluation of biomaterials used for soft tissue
 recovery commonly utilises rats. Rabbits are recommended for implants used
 for hard tissues, because of the rabbit’s size, the possibility of
 implanting the biomaterials on a larger bone surface, and because of the
 peculiarities of rabbit bone tissue that favours rapid recovery after bone
 defects and enables easy reading of the results.

Plastic debris is a significant threat to marine ecosystems, notably affecting seabird populations globally. In this report, the authors document deaths related to plastic ingestion in a Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus, Linnaeus, 1758) and net entanglement in a Yellow-Legged Gull (Larus michahellis, Naumann, 1840) and a Northern Gannet (M. bassanus, Linnaeus, 1758) in Northern Portugal. All three animals died as a result of either plastic entanglement or ingestion. While this report highlights just three cases, it emphasizes the severe negative impacts of plastic on seabirds, ultimately leading to the deaths of these animals.

Mortality from plastic ingestion and net entanglement in marine birds - description of three cases

In recent years, there have been numerous research activities related to the use of different herbal agents, especially those originating from chestnuts and garlic, as alternatives to synthetic growth promoters like antibiotics. Garlic and its active ingredients have been studied for their potential benefits, such as improving feed intake, production performance, rumen fermentation, and udder health. The aim of our study was to investigate the influence of garlic polysulfides, including diallyl polysulfide and dipropyl polysulfide, on hematological and biochemical parameters in dairy cows, as well as their possible effect on subclinical mastitis therapy. Eighteen late lactation Holstein cows were divided into three numerically equal groups (n=6): CON (non-supplemented cows), ALL (supplemented with 1000 mg/day of diallyl polysulfide), and PRP (supplemented with 1000 mg/day of dipropyl polysulfide). Blood sampling for hematological and biochemical analyses as well as the California mastitis test (CMT) test were performed before and after the 15-day study. The results showed that garlic supplementation significantly increased blood leukocyte count and blood glucose concentration (p&lt;0.05, respectively), and significantly decreased blood urea concentration (p&lt;0.05) after the 15-day trial in both ALL and PRP groups compared with the day 0. In the supplemented groups, the CMT score was significantly lower (p&lt;0.05, respectively) after the 15-day treatment compared with the CON group. The use of different mixtures of biologically active garlic polysulfides in the diet could improve immune and metabolic status, as well as support mastitis treatments in dairy cows.

Impact of garlic polysulfide supplementation on biochemical and hematological parameters in dairy cows

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a severe and highly communicable disease. It is viral disease that particularly affects shoats. Its domino effects are economic losses through loss of production, deaths, abortions, and the cost of disease control. An outbreak investigation was conducted from May to November 2022 in Bambase district of Benishangul Gumuz regional state to determine the presence of PPR virus, and morbidity, mortality and case fatality rates. Altogether, 180 clinically diagnosed and 32 shoats with typical clinical sign of PPR were identified for laboratory confirmation Nasal and rectal swabs from 32 sheep and goats were collected and cultured on Verodog SLAM (VDS) cell line and tested using then tested using a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT_PCR) assay and conventional PCR with 1.5% gel electrophoresis for detection of the N gene. The overall morbidity, mortality and case fatality rate was 17.77%, 2.77% and 15.62% respectively. Meanwhile, goats had a higher morbidity (26.5%), mortality (4.81%) and case fatality rate (18.18%) than sheep (10.3%, 1.03% and 10% respectively). Half (50%; 16/32) of samples were successfully cultivated on Vero dog SLAM cell line, showing cytopathic effects of PPR virus such as rounding cells, foamy vacuolation, aggregation and syncia formation. Out of 32 animals tested, 17 (53.13%) showed positive results for PPR virus by real-time PCR. Further analysis with conventional PCR revealed the presence of the N gene in all 17 positive samples with a 351bp fragment size. The results showed a higher morbidity rate in caprines than in ovines. Based on these findings, it is recommended to carry out a further phylogenetic study to identify the strain of virus circulating in the study area.

Isolation and molecular detection of Peste des petits ruminants virus in an outbreak investigation in Benishangul Gumuz, Ethiopia

The cestode Joyeuxiella pasqualei is a common parasite of cats in Southern European countries, and due to the increasingly pronounced effects of global warming, there is a tendency for the spread and appearance of this parasite among carnivores in other parts of the European continent. The adult forms of the parasite are localized in the small intestines of definitive hosts (cats, dogs, foxes, wolves, and other carnivores). Cats become infected by ingesting primary hosts (coprophagic insects) and secondary intermediate hosts (reptiles and small mammals), which harbor the infective larval forms of the parasite (cysticercoids). In most infected animals, the disease progresses asymptomatically. An exception occurs in cases of high-intensity infections, where the adhesion of adult parasites to the intestinal mucosa leads to necrosis of the intestinal villi, invagination, and partial obstruction of the intestine, significantly compromising the health and well-being of cats. Successful treatment is achieved through the administration of praziquantel, and for prevention, it is necessary to prevent contact between cats and populations of intermediate hosts. Data on the etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, and control of this tapeworm are of particular importance for inexperienced diagnosticians, who, due to insufficient knowledge about J. pasqualei parasitism, can make significant errors in clinical diagnosis. Due to its significance for clinical practice and the welfare of cats, it is necessary to include this cestode in the differential diagnosis of intestinal invagination in cats and of other carnivore cestodes, which are species from the genera Diplopylidium and Dipylidium.

The significance of the cestode Joyeuxiella pasqualei (cyclophyllidea: dipylidiidae) for clinical practice and the welfare of cats

A 5-year-old female Persian cat was presented with the owner?s complaint about lethargy, anorexia, and no defecation. Physical examination revealed relatively poor general health status. Also, marked azotemia was one of the prominent findings of clinical pathology. Abdominal ultrasound revealed smooth-walled anechoic cysts in both kidneys, characteristic of feline polycystic kidney disease. Three weeks after the initiation of supportive therapy, percutaneous aspiration of large cysts was performed under the guidance of ultrasonography. The contents of the cysts were hypocellular and did not contain infectious or neoplastic cells. Following the re-examination of the patient after 30 days, the clinical and hematological parameters were notably improved. Therefore, aspiration of cysts guided by ultrasonography can be beneficial in alleviating some of the complications of polycystic kidney disease and improving the life quality of affected cats. However, it may be temporary, and this method needs to be repeated periodically.
