Administration in Social Work

In the past three decades, volunteers became the backbone of many human service organizations (HSOs). We propose that the role of groups in volunteer management is often neglected. We first review the theoretical and empirical literature on group dynamics relevant to fostering volunteering, followed by a literature review on the nexus between groups and volunteering. We then develop a model of four volunteer group types and their unique utility as it pertains to volunteering in HSOs: habitual volunteering group, dual-identity group, training-induced group, and provisional group. We conclude with a summary, discussion, and implications regarding the role of groups in volunteer recruitment, socialization, motivation, and retention.

This article examines how rationales for organizational change shape the subsequent change effort. The change process in question is multicultural development in nonprofit human service agencies. Analysis is based on interviews with consultants and practitioners experienced in multicultural development. To further illustrate connections between rationales and outcomes, three case studies are presented. Results indicate that how the organizational change is framed in part determines the degree of change that occurs.

This study investigated predictors of self-reported growth in a purposive sample of 398 small to mid-sized nonprofit organizations, including small grassroots organizations, which were providing their services in a metropolitan area facing dire economic conditions. The analytic design used both a multinomial logit and structural equation approach to investigate the associations between program development, readiness to change, management capacity, and fund development and organizational growth. The results indicated that program development, readiness to change, and fund development were positively and directly related to growth, while management capacity was indirectly associated with growth via the pathways of program development and readiness to change.
