Annals of Agricultural Sciences (AOAS) is the official journal of Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University. Trichoderma spp. have been widely used in agricultural applications due to its well known biological control mechanism. The usage of this microbial inoculant in Trichoderma-based products attracts the attention of researchers to discover more on other potential benefits of Trichoderma spp. Hence, through research work from worldwide researchers, we present the success of Trichoderma spp. relate to plant diseases, plant growth, decomposition process and bioremediation. Plus, their secondary metabolites production in agroecosystem will also be reviewed in this paper. These surprising findings bring enormous advantages to the agriculture industry in order to apply environmentally friendly agriculture practices.

Biological functions of Trichoderma spp. for agriculture applications

The study aimed to examine the effect of tiger nut milk on the quality characteristics of ice milk when fresh skim milk was partially replaced. At levels of substitution of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 %, the chemical and physical composition of the samples, the antioxidant and total phenolic content, the cytotoxic activity, the sensory properties, and the microstructure were evaluated. The results indicated that increasing the substitution levels of fresh skim milk for tiger nut milk significantly increased fat, fiber, antioxidant, total phenolic content, and hardness of the ice milk treatments (P < 0.05), whereas their ash content, overrun and viscosity decreased. Furthermore, total solids, protein concentrations, or pH values between all treatments did not have significant effects (P > 0.05). The IM1 treatment (ice milk without tiger nut milk) melted slower than the other treatments. Additionally, increasing the substitution levels of fresh skim milk for tiger nut milk decreased CaCo-2 cell viability (colorectal cancer cells). Furthermore, sensory properties were significantly affected (P < 0.05) when fresh skim milk was replaced with tiger nut milk. The compact structure can be observed in the images of the treatments IM2 (75 % cow's skim milk +25 % tiger nut milk), IM3 (50 % cow's skim milk +50 % tiger nut milk), IM4 (25 % cow's skim milk +75 % tiger nut milk), and IM5 (100 % tiger nut milk), which were made with different ratios of tiger milk using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). On the other hand, the IM1 treatment image displays larger voids. Therefore, tiger nut milk offers a safe, plant-based alternative to cow's skim milk, provides a source of total phenolics and a natural antioxidant to make functional ice milk with good sensory acceptance, and can be used alongside colon anticancer therapy.

This research was undertaken to assess the microbiological quality of 109 samples of the following 7 different products of the imported frozen shrimp in Egypt, block broken peeled, block whole raw, block headless whole, IQF peeled headless, block peeled headless, IQF peeled deveined, and block peeled deveined frozen shrimp through the period 2014–2015. The results showed that the count of shrimp per pound, thawing weight loss, and pH of these products ranged from 20 to 400, from 1.94% to 2.38% and from 7.48 to 7.92, respectively among frozen shrimp products. The mean count of the total viable count (TVC), Enterobacteriaceae, coliform and Staphylococcus auerus varied from 4.8 × 103 to 7.7 × 108, from nil to 5.1 × 104, from nil to 4.1 × 103 and from nil to 5.9 × 102, respectively in the aforesaid frozen shrimp products. The count of TVC in 40 and 9% samples of block broken peeled, and block peeled headless frozen shrimp products, respectively was higher than the allowable limit (106 cfu/g) in the Egyptian Standards of Frozen Shrimp Specification. Enterobacteriaceae, coliform and coagulase active Staphylococci were detected in some analysed samples but in load less than those recommended by the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality Control (2005). E. coli was not detected in any of analysed samples of the 7 frozen shrimp products.

Microbiological quality of imported frozen shrimp in Egypt

Fish protein concentrate (FPC) is prepared to recover valuable nutrients from fish flesh as an affordable, acceptable, and excellent protein source. This paper reviews the existing FPC preparation processes through solvent extraction. The influential operating parameters should be selected to obtain the highest FPC yield with superior functional properties. Furthermore, this paper also aims to review the functional properties and potential applications of the FPC for human consumption, i.e., food, beverage, cosmetics, and personal care. Clear FPC information summarized in this paper is expected to strengthen consumer understanding, motivate FPC manufacturers, and extend FPC utilization in any possible field.

Fish protein concentrate for human consumption: A review of its preparation by solvent extraction methods and potential for food applications

This trial was planned to study the impact of dietary 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D3) and ultraviolet light on some economical characteristics of broiler chicks (e.g., body weight, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio, bone measurements, and behavioral aspects). A total of 360 one-day-old chicks were randomly divided into four treatments (6 pens/treatment with 15 birds/pen). The experiment was laid in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Two light sources; Light-emitting diode (LED) or ultraviolet light B (UVB) and two 25-OH-D3 levels (0 level as control and 300 g/ton). The distribution of treatments was as follows: Treatment 1 (LED with 300 g/ton 25-OH-D3); Treatment 2 (LED with control diet); Treatment 3 (UVB with 25-OH-D3); Treatment 4 (UVB with control diet). The main results revealed that using UVB lamps had a positive effect on body weight at the marketing age compared to the LED group (1.985 vs 1.939). Regardless of the light source, adding 25-OH-D3 to the ration had a positive effect on body weight, especially at 28 and 35 days of age. Regarding cumulative feed intake, both T2 and T3 groups respectively consumed more feed compared to others, the highly significant difference was observed among them. Apart from diet impact, LED birds consumed slightly more feed compared to UVB birds. Both T3 and T4 groups recorded the lowest and significant figures of H/L ratio compared to the rest groups. It is interested to note that UVB birds had a lower H/L ratio compared to LED ones. According to the current findings, broilers reared under UVB light had lower stress susceptibility and fear responses. In general, results obtained revealed that there was an added value and synergetic actions when using UVB light and vitamin 25-OH-D3 in diets for most studied traits.

Maize (Zea mays L.), as a cornerstone crop, is integral to both livestock feed and human nutrition. However, the effects of long-term manure application on maize yield, micronutrient levels, and nutritional quality under a maize-soybean rotation system have not been fully elucidated. This study investigates the impact of long-term manure application on maize yield, the micronutrients content of grains, and grain nutritional quality in a maize-soybean rotation. Our results indicate that consistent manure application significantly enhances maize yield. Compared to the long-term chemical fertilizers only, the addition of manure increased the Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn concentrations of the grains. In addition, the highest grain protein concentration was observed when treated with manure. Concentrations of protein fractions such as globulins, gliadins, and glutenins were found to be higher with a low manure application (13.5 t ha−1) compared to high manure application (27 t ha−1). The optimum increments in essential amino acids (EAA) and the ratios of essential to nonessential amino acids (EAA/NAA) was observed under low manure addition treatment. Collectively, incorporating manure into a long-term maize-soybean crop rotation not only escalates yields but also critically enhances the nutritional profile of maize grains through an increase in micronutrients and by promoting balance of proteins and amino acids within the grain. In the long run, low manure addition is more conducive to improving the nutritional quality of grains under crop rotation systems.

Appropriate application of organic fertilizer enhanced yield, microelement content, and quality of maize grain under a rotation system

Both increased plant density and wide seedling strip planting (WSP) can improve wheat grain yield. However, whether and how greater gains in grain yield can be achieved by combining WSP with an increased plant density is unclear. In this study, two winter wheat cultivars were subjected to three plant densities (lower, normal, and higher) and two planting patterns (conventional planting [CP] and WSP). The effects of plant density, planting pattern, and their combination on the solar radiation interception and conversion, biomass accumulation, harvest index, and grain yield were investigated. In response to an increase in plant density from lower to higher and a shift from CP to WSP and their combination, grain yield increased by 15.43 %, 10.85 % and 27.62 % for cultivar Taimai198, and by 13.13 %, 8.31 % and 22.41 % for Shannong30, respectively. The larger increases in grain yield were mainly ascribed to enhanced dry matter production, in particular after anthesis with no variation or a slight decline in the harvest index. The higher plant density was the dominant driver of the enhanced radiation interception, whereas WSP was mainly responsible for ameliorating the reduction in radiation use efficiency (RUE) caused by the higher plant density. The combined effects of these two management practices in increasing grain yield were much greater than the independent effects of a shift from CP to WSP or an increase in plant density. Optimizing the planting method may thus be a promising option for further improving grain yield of a densely planted wheat population by increasing the RUE.
