This study evaluated the physical and biochemical characteristics of different citrus cultivars grown under semi-arid conditions in the Bundelkhand region of India. The study included four sweet orange, four mandarin, and four acid lime cultivars. The results showed significant variations in fruit quality among the different varieties, with some showing promising traits such as high juice content, acidity, and vitamin C levels. The study found that sweet orange variety Pusa Round had the highest fruit weight, length, and width, while mandarin variety Daisy had the highest juice content and acid lime variety Pusa Udit had the highest vitamin C content. The study also found significant differences in biochemical parameters such as titratable acidity, total sugars, and ascorbic acid content among the different citrus cultivars. The findings of this study have important implications for citrus cultivation and breeding in the region, suggesting that specific cultivars may be better suited to local agro-climatic conditions.

Physicochemical Characterization of Different Citrus varieties Grown Under Semi-Arid Conditions of Bundelkhand Region

Tree integration in agriculture lands is climate resilient land use system traditionally practiced for improved productivity in arid regions. It enhances land productivity and improves livelihoods of rural dwellers. Four agroforestry models that includes block plantations of Prosopis cineraria (Khejri), Tecomella undulata (Rohida), grafted Zizyphus mauritiana (Ber) and Cordia myxa (Gunda) and boundary plantations of Dalbergia sissoo (Shisham), Carissa carandas (Karonda) and Cordia myxa were assessed at two sites within 500 m distance involving two farmers. Seedlings were planted in September 2021. Different crops were cultivated during kharif and rabi seasons of 2021 and 2022. Plants were measured for height and collar diameter and crop yields recorded. After two years of establishment, P. cineraria and T. undulata seedlings exhibited 99.0% survival, whereas seedlings of Z. mauritiana and C. myxa showed survival of 93.0% and 95.0%, respectively. Survival was relatively greater under block plantation as compared to the boundary plantations. Height and collar diameter growth of T. undulata was greater (p&lt;0.05) by 87.0% and 37.0% than P. cineraria seedlings in agri-silvi model. Z. mauritiana exhibited 30.0% greater height, whereas C. myxa showed 22.7% greater collar diameter in agri-horti system. In boundary plantation, survival and growth was greater (p&lt;0.05) in D. sissoo than C. carandas and C. myxa seedlings. Yield of Cyamopsis tetragonoloba was lesser than Plantago ovata and it was higher in 2022-23 than in 2021-22. However, dry matter and grain yields of both C. tetragonoloba and P. ovata were almost similar (p&gt;0.05) in control as well as tree integrated plots. This indicated least competitive effect of trees on crops during initial 2 years. Conclusively, T. undulata and Z. mauritiana in agroforestry and D. sissoo in boundary plantation appeared suitable in initial years. However, recording of data for long term is suggested for effectual conclusion and recommendation based on tree crop interaction.

Growth Performance of Different Tree Species in Agroforestry Systems in IGNP Command Area in Western Rajasthan

General and specific combining ability was studied in castor genotypes under three different environments at Mandor, Jodhpur using three lines and ten testers along with their resultant 30 hybrids and one check (GCH-8) for seed yield and yield attributing traits. Analysis of variance showed significant influence on gca (general combining ability) and sca (specific combining ability) variances for most of the characters studied. Tester MCP-1-1 was found good general combiner for seed yield at 120, 150, 180 and 210 days after sowing and for other yield determining traits. On the contrary, two testers viz., MP-12-17 and MP-27-17 were found superior for overall seed yield at final harvest done at 210 days after sowing and also for some yield governing traits. Hybrids possessing high sca effects for overall seed yield were SKP-84 × MP-36-17, MCP-1-1 × MP-12-17 and DPC-15 × MP-34-17, these hybrids were found promising for high seed yield in arid regions of Rajasthan.

Gene Action and Combining Ability Analysis for Seed Yield and Component Traits in Castor Genotypes

All forms of life on Earth depend on ‘land’ through varied means, such as finding habitats, getting the right environment for human beings to survive, using land as substrate for agriculture etc. In the recent times, land-based ecosystem goods and services have gone to unprecedented levels of land exploitation causing a sharp increase in the process of land degradation. About one-third of the global land surface has been affected by desertification and land degradation (DLD). More than 100 countries, comprising of about 2.6 billion people are under the effect of DLD-directly or in directly. In Asia alone, 38 out of 48 countries are affected while in India, about 32% of its geographical area is undergoing the process of DLD. The present paper discusses the fundamental concepts of land degradation, its causes and drivers and methods to mitigate it. National, regional and global efforts on mapping, monitoring and assessment of land degradation have been reviewed. United Nation’s Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) program, its conceptual framework and its implementation mechanisms in India has been discussed in detail.

Land Degradation Neutrality: Concepts and Implementation Mechanism

This study defines the procedures applied to integrate the Geomatic techniques to characterize the spatial distribution of water erosion at Cachoeiras de Macacu, Rio de Janiro, Brazil. Different images from Landsat8, Airbus on Google Earth Pro, and drone DJI Air 2S were used to investigate the dominant erosion processes and evaluation trends, identify the various types of the stable areas, and producing the descriptive land degradation and the conservation priority maps. 841.49 km² was characterized as stable areas, while 79.46 km² was considered as unstable areas in which sheet and rill erosion remain active. Furthermore, a procedure was identified to determine the priority areas for remedial measures. A total of 81.74 km² was categorized in the priority conservation class, while 21.50 km² was classified under the high-priority class. An additional 49.26 km² fell into the unstable medium-priority class, and 10.78 km² was designated as unstable low-priority. Besides, a land-use/landcover change detection process was done to investigate those changes using Landsat images, showed a significant increase (0.76%) in urbanization, increase (1.21%) in pasture area, but 2.21% decrease in mosaic land uses. Finally, a set of remedial measures were selected to be applied in the hot spot areas.
