Airborne and spaceborne hyperspectral imaging techniques are topics of great interest in the remote sensing field due to their ability to provide rich spatial and spectral information, which are paramount for a better characterization of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current state-of-the-art in the applications of airborne and spaceborne hyperspectral imaging for atmospheric research. Main hyperspectral imaging systems, data analysis methods and their applications in some atmosphere research areas, including the estimation of aerosol and water vapor content for a deeper understanding of atmospheric phenomena, cloud characterization for better prediction of weather phenomena, and gas emissions detection for air quality control, were discussed. Many studies have shown very promising results, but as hyperspectral imaging is in a continuous dynamic, there are several challenges that need to be addressed in future studies so that it can become one of the most important tools for atmosphere research. The answer to some questions on this topic is provided and directions for future research are outlined.

Application of airborne and spaceborne hyperspectral imaging techniques for atmospheric research: past, present, and future

Abstract This article reviews some of the recent advances in Raman spectroscopy, in areas related to natural tissues and cell biology. It summarizes some of the most widely used peak frequencies and their assignments. The aim of this study is to prepare a database of molecular fingerprints, which will help researchers in defining the chemical structure of the biological tissues introducing most of the important peaks present in the natural tissues. In spite of applying different methods, there seems to be a considerable similarity in defining the peaks of identical areas of the spectra. As a result, it is believed that preparing a unique collection of the frequencies encountered in Raman spectroscopic studies can lead to significant improvements both in the quantity and quality of spectral data and their outcomes. This article is the first review of its kind to provide a precise database on the most important Raman characteristic peak frequencies for researchers aiming to analyze natural tissues by Raman spectroscopy and will especially be of considerable assistance to those who are focusing on the analysis of cancerous tissues by Raman spectroscopy.

Raman spectroscopy can detect conformational changes in collagen structures and these findings are reviewed in this article. More specifically, some progressive diseases are mainly caused by alterations of collagen molecules but what is occurring at the biochemical level of this complex molecule usually remains unclear. While it may be true that a number of analytical techniques can analyze collagen, most of them have a series of limitations that limit their applicability to a wide range of samples. To understand in more detail the progression of a disease due to changes in the collagen structure, a technique that can detect subtle alterations at the biochemical level is needed. Raman spectroscopy is a label-free and noninvasive technique that can easily pick up on any conformational changes reflected primarily at the lipids, amides and proline and hydroxyproline regions. This review is the first compilation of studies of conformational changes in collagen molecules, providing help to understand changes in collagen biochemistry that can be of relevance to the human wound healing, ageing and pathologies.

: Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), as a noninvasive spectroscopic method, permits high-resolution, high-sensitivity, fast, in situ absorption measurements of atomic and molecular species and narrow spectral features in gaseous, solid, and liquid phases. Advances in new diode laser sources and laser spectroscopic techniques generally have triggered an increasing application of TDLAS in various disciplines (for example, atmospheric environmental monitoring, chemical analysis, industrial process control, medical diagnostics and combustion monitoring, etc.) over the last four decades. This article reviews some important developments in TDLAS, from its basic principles as a spectroscopic tool to the demonstration of gas absorption measurements, emphasizing signal enhancement and noise reduction techniques developed for improving current TDLAS performance.

A Review of Signal Enhancement and Noise Reduction Techniques for Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has gained increasing attention for sensing chemicals and molecules at low concentrations. Localized surface plasmons (LSPs) that occur on metal nanostructures can be used to enhance small Raman signals while maintaining the non-destructivity of Raman spectroscopy. SERS can be used to detect consumer chemical products that effect on the human body through the ecosystem. In addition, there is increasing demand for its use in personal disease-monitoring systems. SERS materials can be made in various forms using metal nanoparticles (NPs) that can produce LSPs. Recently, nanotechnology has been used to fabricate SERS materials with high selectivity for target materials by finely controlling the structure. Since the structure affects the enhancement of Raman signals, research into various nanostructures is important for next-generation SERS sensors. Herein, we first discuss various fabrication of SERS dispersions and substrates using plasmonic metal NPs. Afterward, we summarize the enhancement factor (EF) and limit of detection (LOD) values of SERS materials prepared via various fabrication methods.

Analytical spectroscopic techniques and associated calculated indices have frequently been applied to assess diagenesis as a proxy for the reliability of biogeochemical analyses. This review explores a selection of the most popular spectroscopic techniques including FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction and fluorescence and presents calculated indices, assessing their reliability. This article presents the basics of each methodology and the calculation of each commonly applied index and its interpretive values. These methods taken in conjunction are considered complimentary, but limitations of funding and access often limit researchers to the use of one or two methods. The current evidence suggests that, in such situations, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy are the most easily applied, most reliable, and least destructive of all current approaches.
