Abstract.For the past two decades, I have been developing an integrative Christian marriage theory, based in part on a grounding concept of natural law and an overarching theory of covenant. The natural law part of this theory starts with an account of the natural facts, conditions, interests, needs, and qualities of human life, interaction, and generation—what I call the “premoral” goods or realities of life. It then identifies the natural inclinations of humans to form enduring and exclusive monogamous marriages and to preserve these units as the central site for intimacy, procreation, and nurture of children. In this paper, I first summarize this natural law theory of marriage and then compare it to the formulations of other modern Christian thinkers. I also defend this theory against various modern critics of natural law—in part by reinterpreting some traditional natural law teachings that in my view have been misunderstood, in part by looking at the interesting convergences between the insights into sex, marriage, and family life offered by contemporary Christian theological ethicists and by evolutionary biologists and biological anthropologists.

A NATURAL LAW THEORY OF MARRIAGE*

The history of modern science bears abundant witness to the fact that the humble frog has yielded myriad insights into the intricacies of anatomy and physiology far beyond frogs, producing several Nobel laureates in the process. A concurrent but less heralded inquiry and debate, however, has wrestled with the harder question of, as Thomas Henry Huxley put it in 1870, “Has a Frog a Soul?,” with frogs serving as convenient experimental subjects for issues of the human soul and body. Here, I present highlights from this debate among leading eighteenth- and nineteenth-century scientists representing animistic and burgeoning mechanistic views, with the latter effecting a significant contraction of soul, ending with William James in 1890. I then bring the inquiry up to date by showing how Alfred North Whitehead’s philosophy of organism and some recent physiological research offer promising and constructive postmodern hope for addressing the dispiriting loss of soul, on various levels, that afflicts much of modern life.

It asks for the explanatory value of the sociological concept of secularization, points to the relevance of esotericism, elaborates on the importance of context with reference to developments around science and religion in Germany, and suggests an appropriate border regimen between science and religion by employing hermeneutic means to strive towards science-engaged theologies.

It then identifies features of the third chapter of the book Science and Religion that may make it peculiarly resistant to replication. Then, the questions are addressed whether and how a replication itself should be replicated. Finally, the article provides reflection on the value of replication by responding to the earlier contributions led by Hans Van Eyghen and Rachel S. A. Pear in this thematic section.

There have been calls for a program of replication in the humanities. Although usually thought of as confined to the hard sciences, replication may, under the correct conditions, be a useful tool for historians who propose an explanation of why a set of events occurred. But the program of replication in the humanities is challenged when we consider degrees of freedom, i.e., the number of independent parameters that function within a system. Evidence from the sciences has revealed that experimental variables once thought of as unimportant might in fact be critical. Change just one of them and the experimental result changes in ways that were at first unimaginable. How then, are we to know if the degrees of freedom offered as part of a historical explanation are indeed satisfactory? There are constraints to what may be replicated, but this is the case for the sciences no less than for the humanities.

Early in life, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin knew he must love both God and Earth with equal passion. Yet, it took him many years to formulate his famous phrase “communion with God through Earth,” (Teilhard de Chardin 1968a, 57) and many more years to articulate in a profound way how the interaction of incarnation with evolution provides a framework for this formula. Today, it is recognized that a deeper sense of matter/spirit, of incarnation/evolution, allows the tapping into the sacredness of matter in a way that will motivate us to develop a flourishing humanity as well as a flourishing Earth. This article explores these concepts.

This article offers an appreciative but critical response to Donovan Schaefer’s book Wild Experiment, focusing on the connection between emotion and reason, particularly in the context of conspiracy theories and scientific inquiry. While acknowledging the valuable insights provided by Schaefer’s cogency theory and its emphasis on the role of emotions in shaping beliefs and reasoning, I argue for a more nuanced understanding of the factors that contribute to the popularity of conspiracy theories and the success of science. In particular, I challenge Schaefer’s characterization of scientists as primarily driven by cold emotions and a fear of making mistakes. Instead, I emphasize the social structure of science and institutional practices that enable collective intellectual vigilance and the advancement of reliable knowledge.
