Abstract To gain a more detailed understanding of health care utilization patterns, researchers have begun to disaggregate administrative data by a number of important variables, including sex. Our purpose in this article is to confirm the need for sex-disaggregated data in health research, but also to argue that the further step of gender-based analysis is necessary. We focus on a number of conceptual and methodological issues surrounding sex-disaggregated administrative data, and we conclude that sex disaggregation alone is insufficient. Gender-sensitive indicators must be developed and used in order to understand the context of health differences and develop appropriate policies and programs.

Sex Is Not Enough: The Need for Gender-Based Analysis in Health Research

A cross-sectional study describing aspects of menstrual poverty was analyzed with 201 female lower-secondary students in Mexico. The 15.5% indicated having a lot of knowledge about menstruation before experiencing it, increasing to 36.5% once menstruation began. Nearly 80% expressed negative or erroneous ideas about menstruation. Adolescents whose mothers have a basic educational level or lack formal education are twice as likely to not have information at the time of menarche (OR = 2.08, 95% CI 1.00, 4.33). Promoting educational initiatives would help that new generations of adolescents can live a menstruation in a dignified, safe and positive way.

This study explores the significant role of traditional institutions called Tsuki in fostering the mental well-being of Ao-Naga women. This institution served as a platform for fostering emotional expression, social bonding, and collective support, which have historically contributed to the mental health and resilience of Ao-Naga women. The research highlights how these traditional practices provide a sense of belonging, purpose, and stability, which are crucial for mental well-being. By offering opportunities for women to engage in meaningful social interactions, share their life experiences, and receive communal support, Tsuki acts as a protective factor against stress and mental health challenges. The study uses a Participatory Observation method of study because this method allows the researcher to witness behaviours, practices, and interactions in their natural context. It also helps the researcher to provide a deep insight into the cultural and social norms that shape the behaviours and interactions within the community.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) are air pollutants that may cause serious adverse effects on the health status of pregnant women and their fetuses. In this study, researchers aimed to investigate the effect of an educational intervention using an extended parallel process model on the protective behaviors of pregnant women against BTEX. In this quasi-experimental study, 94 first-trimester pregnant women were recruited for the study. The intervention caused significant increases in mean scores of perceived susceptibility, severity, response efficacy, and self-efficacy. The researchers found the effectiveness of educational intervention on protective behaviors to reduce exposure to BTEX air pollutants.

This research aims to scrutinize the efficacy of glove changing as a strategy to diminish complications arising from cesarean deliveries in Vietnam. 629 expectant women were randomized into either the standard care group or the glove change group. The latter group adhered to an intra-operative protocol of glove replacement prior to abdominal closure during cesarean section, whereas the former group did not. Data pertaining to wound-related complications and surgical site infections were amassed and analyzed utilizing Stata 16.0. The study detected a significant decrease in wound-related complications and surgical site infections in the glove change group. As a result, this study advocates for the adoption of this strategy during cesarean section procedures, in conjunction with other interventions, to improve physical and mental health outcomes in women post-cesarean section.
