Agribusiness is an international journal that aims to enhance our understanding of how food systems operate, evolve, and how public and private behaviors affect the performance of the global agribusiness complex. The journal focuses on applying economic analysis to the organization and performance of firms and markets within industrial food systems. Topics of interest include supply and demand analysis, industrial organization analysis, price and trade analysis, marketing, finance, and public policy analysis. We welcome international, cross-national comparative, and domestic studies. To promote research, the journal's forum section occasionally provides commentary and reports on business policy issues.

ABSTRACT The agricultural sector in Latin America plays a vital role in ensuring food security while impacting the environment. However, there remains a lack of analysis regarding the inputs responsible for pollution within its sub‐technologies. Hence, this article aims to assess agricultural green total factor productivity (TFP) through a novel decomposition of the Luenberger–Hicks–Moorsteen (LHM) indicator. Utilizing panel data from 23 Latin American countries covering the period from 2000 to 2019, our study reveals that green TFP has achieved a consistent annual growth rate of 0.71%. Specifically, technical efficiency change (TEC) accounts for 0.26% of the TFP, with the technical change component (TP) and scale efficiency change (SEC) contributing 0.74% and 0.30%, respectively. These findings suggest that Latin American countries have increasingly utilized agricultural inputs more efficiently over time. The results provide valuable insights for developing innovative measures and effective policy strategies to promote sustainability in the agricultural sector.

Assessing Agricultural Green Total Factor Productivity in Latin America

ABSTRACT Smallholder agriculture remains a cornerstone for economic development and poverty reduction in Latin America. Their transition to sustainable agricultural production is critical in the face of the environmental challenges posed by conventional farming practices and is a key pathway to achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. This study examines the effects of Sustainable Agricultural Practices (SAP) adoption on coffee production and technical efficiency (TE) among smallholders in Peru, focusing on both observable and unobservable factors. Using a multistage framework, we employ propensity score matching to control for observable factors, estimate a Stochastic Production Frontier model with sample selection bias correction to control for unobservable factors, and assess technological differences using a metafrontier approach. Our analysis of pooled cross‐sectional data from 2017 to 2019 indicates that age, farm accessibility, and having Quechua as a first language are factors that make farmers more likely to adopt SAP. Although SAP adopters initially show higher production levels, the difference is not statistically significant after accounting for unobserved factors. However, SAP adopters utilize better technology and exhibit higher TE compared to non‐adopters, highlighting the potential benefits of promoting sustainable practices in smallholder agriculture.

Do Sustainable Agricultural Practices Boost Production and Technical Efficiency? A Case Study of Coffee Smallholders in Peru

ABSTRACT This paper examines the dynamics, competitiveness, specialization, and structural changes in India's honey exports from 2003 to 2022 utilizing trade data under HS code 04090000. This paper analyzes Indian honey export under different indices, including the revealed comparative advantage (RCA), revealed symmetric comparative advantage (RSCA), comparative export performance (CEP), trade balance index (TBI), and Grubel–Lloyd index (GLI). A detailed analysis reveals significant export growth, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.72% over the past decade, driven primarily by the US market, which accounted for 80% of India's honey exports in 2022. However, high export instability was noted in the US market, while GCC and SAARC countries exhibited more stable demand. The research also assesses market loyalty using Markov chain analysis, highlighting the US as the most stable export destination. Structural changes in India's honey export markets were identified, with the Gulf countries and Africa emerging as key markets following the European Union's 2010 ban on Indian honey. Despite competitive pressure from major honey‐exporting nations like New Zealand and Argentina, India's strong comparative advantage and specialized export focus position it favorably in the global market. The paper tries to highlight the need for strategic diversification of export markets and expansion of honey production to sustain India's growth in the honey export sector.

Competitiveness, Specialization, and Structural Shifts in India's Honey Exports: An Analysis of Global Market Dynamics From 2003 to 2022

ABSTRACT Smallholder farmers are reverting to traditional production methods due to the high opportunity costs and unintended consequences of new technologies. This study focuses on row planting technology, which is labor‐intensive and slow without mechanized operations. Data from 224 nonadopters and 237 adopters of row planting were analyzed using ordinary least squares and instrumental variable techniques. The results show varying effects of row planting on yield and income across different agroecological zones, with labor use being endogenously determined. Comparing labor requirements, we found that row planting demands an additional 14.79 man‐hours per acre over broadcasting seeds. The current dissemination approach of sustainable intensification technologies such as row planting prioritizes yield‐enhancing technologies over mechanization, hindering adoption. We propose integrating small‐scale mechanization, such as small‐scale planters and harvesters, to reduce labor hours and promote sustainable intensification technology adoption.

Examining the Impact of Row Planting on Labor Use for Sustainable Food Production Among Maize Farmers in Rural Ghana

ABSTRACT Price promotion is the marketing tool typically used by retail brands to boost sales and gain market share. In this paper, we intend to investigate the price transmission mechanism among competitive brands in Spain when price reductions that are associated with price promotions take place. The study is focused on intra‐retailer competition in two retailers with different business models. The methodological framework is based on the estimation of a two‐regime threshold vector autoregressive model (TVAR) of price levels in which the Private Label price has been considered as the threshold variable. The results suggest that the price responses of manufacturer brands to private label price reductions are much larger than the inverse responses. The price of the private label reacts only weakly to price reductions in manufacturer brands. These responses decrease in strength as the market share of the Private Label increases within the retailer.

Price Transmission During Promotions: A Case Study of Spanish Milk Brands

ABSTRACT We investigate the economic feasibility of the Brazilian crop‐livestock integration system. Under this system, the Brazilian farmer can produce soybeans, corn, and graze for cattle on the same land during one crop year. This technology can substantially increase agricultural production in the country. We contrasted the stochastic net present value of traditional farming with the integrated system under four different scenarios. To rank the scenarios, we use stochastic dominance methods. The results suggest more significant economic gains for crop‐livestock integration scenarios.
