The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of an online self-compassion intervention for transgender adolescents, with the aim of improving mental health. Participants identified as transgender or gender expansive, were between the ages of 13 and 17, and lived in the U.S. or Canada. The empirically-based self-compassion program, Mindful Self-Compassion for Teens (formerly Making Friends with Yourself) was implemented in eight 1.5 hour sessions on the Zoom platform by two trained instructors. Surveys were administered pre-, post-intervention, and at 3 months follow-up, and qualitative data were collected through end-of-program interviews and open-ended questions on the post-survey. All protocols were approved by the university IRB. Quantitative data analysis included repeated measures ANOVAs, and qualitative data were analyzed via both inductive and deductive methods. Results indicated that all but one psychosocial measure significantly improved from pre- to post-intervention, which then significantly improved at 3-month follow-up; most other improvements were maintained at follow-up. Four themes emerged from the qualitative data: virtual safe space; connection to body; personal growth; and recommended course changes and are discussed. Results suggest that self-compassion interventions can be incorporated into therapy programs to support and improve mental health for transgender adolescents.

Improving Mental Health Among Transgender Adolescents: Implementing Mindful Self-Compassion for Teens

The primary goal of this study was to examine the effects of a synchronous online mindfulness-based psychoeducation program on attentional control and mindfulness levels of Turkish late adolescents and the intervention experiences of the participants. A sample of adolescents ( n = 40, Mage 16.7) was randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. There were 10 participants in each four groups. The embedded design with a convergent approach was used. The quantitive data were obtained using the Solomon four group design while the qualitative data were obtained with phenomenological approach. The mindfulness-based intervention consisting of eight sessions and seven workshops was applied online to the experimental groups. The findings revealed that the attentional control and mindfulness levels of the adolescents in the experimental groups were significantly higher compared to the adolescents in the control groups. Regarding the qualitative findings, the adolescents stated that there were improvements in their levels of attentional control, regulating emotions, self-knowledge, self-confidence, optimism, effective communication skills, academic achievement and motivation to study after the program. The findings of the follow-up test showed that improvements in attentional control and mindfulness levels of the adolescents persisted for 8 weeks. The findings showed that the mindfulness-based intervention is a promising tool for late adolescents.

The Effectiveness of a Synchronous Online Mindfulness-Based Intervention on the Attentional Control and Mindfulness of Turkish Late Adolescents: A Mixed Methods Study

Arts-based practices are positively associated with the prevention and management of adolescent mental health, and community-based participatory research (CBPR) methods are shown to enhance equity in mental health interventions. This study sought to understand how CBPR approaches to research are used to assess arts-based interventions for adolescent mental health in the United States. Five databases (Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) and Google Scholar were searched. The included studies investigate adolescents (ages 10–19), included an arts-based practice, and occurred in the United States. Of 2,810 identified articles, 21 meet inclusion criteria and are included. Extracted components included forms of art, mental health focus, points of adolescent engagement, parental engagement, adherence to CBPR principles, and demographics. Art forms included dance/movement ( n = 2), literary arts ( n = 3), media ( n = 4), music ( n = 3), theater/performance ( n = 3), and visual arts, craft, and design ( n = 12). Five mental health categories represented the included studies—General Mental Health ( n = 9), Anxiety/Depression/Suicide ( n = 6), Social Support/Loneliness ( n = 2), Trauma/Resilience ( n = 3), Emotion Regulation ( n = 1). Studies prioritized minoritized populations and strongly adhered to the principles of CBPR. This review offers a comprehensive understanding of how diverse forms of arts participation are leveraged to address and mitigate the complexities of adolescent mental illness.

A Scoping Review of Arts-Based Interventions with Community Based Participatory Research Approaches for Addressing Mental Health Amongst Adolescents in the United States

Understanding the role of cultural fit and responsiveness in youth-adult relationships is crucial for positive youth development within after-school programs. This study explored (a) youth’s conceptualization of cultural similarities/differences in relationships with adult program leaders, and (b) how processes within culturally similar/different relationships influence the formation of positive youth-adult relationships. Guided by constructivist grounded theory, semi-structured interviews with 50 youth (ages 12–19 years; 64% girls; racially/ethnically diverse adolescents) across 13 youth programs in the Midwest were analyzed. Findings revealed that youth determined cultural congruence/incongruence with adult program leaders based on various factors. In culturally similar relationships, youth (1) immediately assumed that program leaders understood them or (2) anticipated this understanding based on their friend/family-like connections. Conversely, in culturally different relationships, youth described assessing their leaders’ cultural sensitivity by (3) observing their interactions and behaviors, and (4) conversing with the leaders about their experiences with the youth’s culture or their shared commonalities. These four processes led to youth feeling understood by adult program leaders which then led to positive youth-adult relationships. Practical implications include activities that foster explorations of each other’s cultural backgrounds and training adult on cultural humility to ensure culturally sensitive interactions in a safe program environment.

“He Knows Me as a Person”: Navigating Cultural Dynamics in Relational Pathways Towards Positive Youth-Adult Relationships in Youth Programs

While interest theories have long focused on describing the development of a single interest, research increasingly recognizes the multiplicity of interests. Adolescents are likely to relate their multiple interest pursuits to each other, and the development of these interest pursuits may become intertwined. The current study explored this intertwined development of interest pursuits in daily life through repeated interviews with thirty Dutch adolescents (aged 14–25 years). Each adolescent was interviewed three times over 3 years. They were asked about the (changes in) interest pursuits that they previously reported through an Experience Sampling Method smartphone application, which they had filled in multiple times a day for a whole week, for a total of 9 weeks throughout the 3 years. Inductive analysis of the interviews revealed three processes of intertwined development: interest genesis, where one interest developed out of another, hybrid interest engagement, where interests co-occur or their engagement is mediated by similar skills or knowledge, and combined sensemaking, where two interests have a similar meaning or gain meaning in relation to each other. Interest theory typically speaks of interest development as a process of deepening of a single interest, and the current study illustrates how interest development can in addition reflect the broadening and connecting of multiple interests.

Intertwined Development of Adolescents’ Interest Pursuits

Male supremacist groups and ideas are an increasing threat to the positive development of young people, including college students. This study examines actions students proposed taking when presented with a scenario in which a male classmate displayed warning signs of having been exposed to male supremacist ideas online. We conducted 16 semi-structured interviews with undergraduate students involved in sexual violence prevention efforts on college campuses, who acted as key informants. Participants were ages 18 to 23, female or non-binary, and attended geographically diverse U.S. colleges. More than 50% held marginalized racial and/or ethnic identities, and more than 50% held LGBTQ+ identities. We analyzed students’ responses using critical thematic analysis informed by social justice youth development and antifascist violence prevention. Students suggested direct intervention strategies to encourage change in the hypothetical classmate, and identified peers, faculty, and staff who they would talk to about the warning signs. Students also identified barriers to intervention, including personal safety risks and wanting proof of harm. Findings indicate the need for: institutional resources for options other than peer bystander intervention that can promote individual change; support for students to assess their safety when choosing intervention strategies; and antifascist community-building.
