Stegodon florensis florensis is an example of a diminutive insular stegodon from the early Middle Pleistocene bonebeds of Mata Menge, So’a Basin (Flores, Indonesia). We report the first insights into this Stegodon's bone histology, which furthers our understanding of this species’ palaeobiology, and evaluate the micro-anatomy and metabolic microstructural products retained in well-preserved rib bone tissue. A proximal rib fragment selected from a larger assemblage was sampled at three anatomical regions from which histological sections were produced. The sampling regions differed in cortical width size ranging from relatively thick to thin (17.94 mm to 6.31 mm). Bone tissue arrangement and histomorphometric variables measuring histological products of adult bone remodelling processes (secondary osteon population density and area, bone area, and Haversian canal percentage) were examined. The preservation of bone histology was very good, showing widespread Haversian bone with indication of several generations of remodelling processes, multiple resorption cavities, and the presence of ‘super’ (unusually large) osteons. Secondary osteon density and geometry varied with cortical width through the serial sections whereby the section with the narrowest cortex produced the highest secondary osteon density but also the largest osteon area. The effects of medullary cavity infilling on the endocortical region in the Stegodon rib may also relate to the adjacent periocortical region. The rib histology of this intermediate-sized dwarfed species shows, for the first time, a degree of secondary bone active remodelling in a Stegodon that indicates this was possibly a long-lived individual. Microscopic bone characteristics shared with other extinct and extant proboscideans may be useful in identifying Stegodon from fragmented mixed fossil assemblages. Stegodon florensis florensis est un exemple de stegodon nain insulaire provenant des assemblages osseux datant du début du Pléistocène moyen de Mata Menge, bassin de So’a (Flores, Indonésie). Nous rapportons les premières réflexions sur l’histologie osseuse de ce Stegodon, qui approfondit notre compréhension de la paléobiologie de cette espèce, et évaluons la micro-anatomie et les produits métaboliques microstructuraux retenus dans le tissu osseux des côtes fossiles bien préservées. Un fragment de côte proximale sélectionné parmi un grand assemblage a été échantillonné dans trois régions anatomiques à partir desquelles des coupes histologiques ont été réalisées. Les régions d’échantillonnage différent par la largeur corticale allant de relativement épaisse jusqu’à fine (17,94 mm à 6,31 mm). La disposition du tissu osseux et les variables histomorphométriques mesurant les caractéristiques histologiques des processus de remodelage osseux chez l’adulte (densité et superficie de la population d’ostéones secondaires, superficie osseuse, et pourcentage du canal Haversien) ont été examinés. La préservation de l’histologie osseuse était excellente, montrant un os Haversien présentant plusieurs générations de processus de remodelage, de multiples cavités de résorption, et la présence d’ostéones inhabituellement grosses (super ostéones). La densité et la géométrie des ostéones secondaires varient en fonction de la largeur corticale des sections de sorte que la plus faible épaisseur corticale soit associée avec une densité supérieure d’ostéones secondaires et une surface couverte par les ostéones plus importante. Les effets du remplissage de la cavité médullaire sur la région endocorticale de la côte du Stegodon peuvent s’étendre à la région périocorticale adjacente. L’histologie des côtes de cette espèce naine intermédiaire démontre, pour la première fois, un degré de remodelage osseux secondaire actif chez un Stegodon dont la durée de vie a pu être longue. Les caractéristiques osseuses microscopiques partagées avec d’autres proboscidiens éteints et existants peuvent être utiles pour identifier les Stegodon à partir d’assemblages de fossiles mixtes fragmentés.
