A visible and near infrared (VNIR) to shortwave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral dataset of the Early Archaean North Pole Dome, Pilbara Craton, Western Australia, has been analysed for indications of hydrothermal alteration. Occurrence maps of hydrothermal alteration minerals were produced. It was found that using a spatial resolution on the ground of approximately 5 m and spectral coverage from 0.4 to 2.5 mm was sufficient to delineate several hydrothermal alteration zones and associated veins, including phyllic, serpentinitic and chloritic alteration. These results suggest this level of spectral and spatial resolution would be ideal for localising shallow epithermal activity, should such activity have existed, on the surface of Mars.

Hyperspectral imaging spectroscopy of a Mars analogue environment at the North Pole Dome, Pilbara Craton, Western Australia

Late Devonian sedimentation in the southern Bonaparte Basin was controlled by, and provides a record of, contemporaneous fault movements in the Halls Creek Orogen. An important episode of Late Devonian faulting caused uplift and southward tilting of the Carr Boyd Ranges block and uplift and northward tilting of the O'Donnell Ranges block forming the Galloping Creek and Ragged Ranges sub-basins, respectively. Uplift of the Carr Boyd Ranges provided the eastern source of the Ragged Range Conglomerate, while the south-dipping Carr Boyd Ranges and the uplifted O'Donnell Ranges and Bow River blocks formed the northern and western sources of the Galloping Creek Formation. Conglomeratic facies on both the northern and southwestern margins of the Galloping Creek Sub-basin record interaction with a fault-controlled topography. The apparent lack of unconformities within the northern Galloping Creek Formation and the progressive increase in siltstone content towards the centre of the sub-basin suggest that faulting was no longer an active driver for sedimentation. While alluvial fan deposition infilled the southwestern part of the sub-basin, the remainder of the Galloping Creek Formation was deposited by fluvial systems that changed from an initial proximal braided stream character to a later distal character with more extensive floodplain deposition. Post-depositional folding and faulting of the Galloping Creek Sub-basin were confined to movement on the Halls Creek and Glenhill faults with a probable 10+ km of sinistral offset and uplift of the western block along at least the latter.

Syntectonic Late Devonian terrestrial sedimentation in the southern Bonaparte Basin, Western Australia

The Proterozoic Birrindudu Basin lacks a robust chronostratigraphic framework and remains one of the least explored basins in the Northern Territory, Australia. It shares lithological and chronological similarities with the McArthur Basin and the Tomkinson Province, which together form the 'greater McArthur Basin'. The sedimentary successions of these basins have been divided into five basin-scale, non-genetic depositional packages—the Redbank, Goyder, Glyde, Favenc and Wilton packages. Of these, the Favenc Package is among the least studied. The Wattie Group in the Birrindudu Basin is interpreted as part of the Favenc Package based on geophysical and sedimentological correlations. New LA-ICP-MS detrital zircon U–Pb data provide new constraints on the age and provenance of the Wattie Group and establish relationships with the other Favenc Package sequences of the greater McArthur Basin. Our new data, combined with published data, yield maximum depositional ages for the formations of the Wattie Group, from oldest to youngest: the Wickham Formation (1623 ± 24 Ma), the Burtawurta Formation (1591 ± 70 Ma), the Hughie Sandstone (1585 ± 28 Ma), the Neave Formation (1611 ± 18 Ma), the Gibbie Formation (1705 ± 55 Ma) and the Seale Sandstone (1550 ± 24 Ma). The detrital zircon age distribution suggests that the Wattie Group primarily received detritus from south and southeastern regions, which we link to denudation and erosion of a southern orogen during the early Mesoproterozoic. A subtle northward shift in sediment source is apparent in stratigraphically younger units. This age-provenance shift is matched with a similar stratigraphic change in petrography, which we interpret as near-complete denudation of southern orogenic topography and a return to sediment sourced from proximal northern sources. Tectonically, we interpret that the Wattie Group represents erosion of topography caused by the Isan/Chewings Orogeny during the last major Nuna amalgamation.

Fluid inclusion characteristics and mechanisms of tin mineralisation in the Jialong tin polymetallic deposits, Jiuwandashan–Yuanbaoshan, northern Guangxi, China

The Tau Blueschist in the headwaters of the Sepik River in north-central New Guinea occurs in an allochthonous east–west lens (55 × 8 km) known as the Tau body. The well-foliated Tau mafic schists contain abundant blue amphibole with some intimately associated pelitic–calcareous–graphitic metasediments. Within the Tau body, the metamorphic grade increases towards the north, from lawsonite rocks to epidote blueschists. Pumpellyitic lawsonitic metabasites are known only from river float. Isolated occurrences of coarsely crystalline mafic tectonic blocks (knockers) occur within and just north of the Tau body and comprise a complete spectrum from epidote blueschist to eclogite that includes amphibolite. The blueschists occur within the upper Mesozoic to Eocene Salumei Formation of prehnite–pumpellyite to low-greenschist facies grade. The Salumei Formation comprises a tectonic mixture of Upper Cretaceous mostly pelitic sediments derived from the Australian continent to the south and Eocene ophiolite fragments and arc-related volcanogenic rocks from the north. The region is dominated by west-to-northwest-trending folds, observed in most outcrops, and high-angle faults. The mesoscopic structures and steep dips of bedding and foliation in pre-Oligocene rocks suggest regional-scale isoclinal folding. Regionally, the Frieda and Fiak-Leonard Schultze faults separate the Salumei Formation (and Tau body) to the south from amphibolite and greenschist grade Ambunti Metamorphic rocks to the north; both may have the same protolith. The Ambunti Metamorphics, the Oligocene diorites intruding them and the Tau blueschists all rapidly cooled from ∼500 °C in the late Oligocene (ca 27–23 Ma). The Ambunti Metamorphics and Oligocene diorites are unconformably overlain by unmetamorphosed middle Miocene Wogamush Formation. Subsequent quartz diorite intrusions into the southernmost Ambunti and Salumei Formation metamorphics and the lower Wogamush Formation volcanics was part of the middle Miocene (ca 15 Ma) Maramuni Arc. We propose that the Sepik Terrane was separated from New Guinea in the Late Jurassic by a narrow backarc basin that was starved of sediment until the Late Cretaceous when the Salumei delta prograded across it. Paleogene subduction dipping northwards beneath the Sepik Terrane led to late Eocene to early Oligocene suturing to the New Guinea margin and partial exhumation of an accretionary wedge including the Tau Blueschist and serpentinised mantle slivers. Late Oligocene extension and diorite intrusion were associated with rapid cooling and exhumation of the metamorphic rocks. Subduction flipped and the middle Miocene Maramuni Arc and Wogamush Formation were emplaced followed by collisional tectonism with the Melanesian Arc. This placed the margin into compression and created the modern orogen.

Blueschist emplacement in the Sepik Headwaters region, Papua New Guinea: field relations, petrology, isotopic dating and tectonic setting

Sphalerite is the main Zn ore mineral and is the primary source of Cd, Ge and In, and a minor source of Ga. Owing to a shift from fossil fuel to renewable energy sources, these four minor elements have progressively become more important to the economy. Despite this, resources of Cd, Ga, Ge and In are rarely reported, as these metals are not considered material to the economics of resource development. As a result, the distribution of these elements between and within deposits is poorly known, and national and international resources are largely unreported. Following previous studies, we have compiled analytical data for Cd, Ga, Ge and In from sphalerite and used global and local ore geochemical datasets to assess geochemical controls on the concentration of these elements in Zn deposits. Our results are similar to those of previous studies and suggest that lower-temperature deposits are enriched in Ge, whereas higher-temperature deposits are enriched in In. However, modelling of hydrothermal geochemistry indicates other factors are important in concentrating these metals. In particular, the oxidation state of the fluid (oxidised vs reduced) and the depositional mechanisms also have a strong influence in Ga, Ge and In enrichment. Reduction of oxidised fluids is particularly effective in depositing Ge, whereas cooling very effectively deposits In and, in some cases, Ge. As a consequence, some higher-temperature deposits (e.g. high sulfidation epithermal and some volcanic-hosted massive sulfide) can be Ge-enriched, and some lower-temperature deposits (e.g. siliciclastic–carbonate shale-hosted deposits) can be enriched in In. Using the existing ore geochemical data and calculated characteristic Ge/Zn and In/Zn ratios, indicative estimates have been made on the endowment of Australian Zn deposits of Ge and In. These estimates highlight the potential of the North Australian Zinc Belt for Ge and for VHMS deposits for In. Although there is a large amount of uncertainty in the estimates, they are indicative of the potential for these metals in Australia.
