Neuroscientific approaches, by relying on the perceptual systems created through the senses, render the brain’s mechanisms and structures observable. Neuroaesthetics includes various experimental studies involving technical analyses of the cognitive processes of people's aesthetic experiences. Aesthetics can be expressed as the power of influence in people's communication process with their environment. The cognitive foundations of aesthetic experience have profound implications for fields such as psychology, art and design. One dimension of aesthetic experience is the principle of symmetry, which has connections with Gestalt psychology. Visual symmetry becomes one of the research topics in the field of neuroaesthetics. Visual symmetry refers to the condition in which an object is equal or similar along an axis. This feature makes a significant contribution to the process of individuals making sense of and categorizing their environment. Symmetry simplifies information processing and clarifies relationships between objects. Thus, how symmetry is perceived by the human brain is among the research areas of neuroaesthetics. The aim of this study is to discuss the place and effect of visual symmetry in neuroaesthetic studies. In the study, evaluations were made using the literature review method.

The phenomenology of self-organization based on the four rules in Conway’s game “Life” and the phenomenology of biological life based on the four nucleotides has several parallels and unresolved issues. A cellular automaton operating on a two-dimensional plane is proposed as a basic object for joint consideration of these phenomena. In one case, its dynamics are set by local/global self-organization rules based on the initial configuration in an automaton of the “Life” type of game. In another case, it is a set of nucleotides in the DNA of a particular organism. The author considers images similar to cellular automata generated by the DNA of real organisms when constructing geometric patterns on a two-dimensional plane by changing the mapping scaling parameter. With increasing scaling parameters, individual clusters emerge for living organisms, which can be located symmetrically.

Symmetry is one of the most fundamental and ubiquitous phenomena in architecture and theory. In this article, we investigated Hindu architectural treatises of ancient Vedic literature that conceptualised and described symmetry in the theory of medieval India. The case focused on Shruti/Śruti and Smriti texts based on Śāstra pramāṇam tradition and asked how architectural treatises transmitted the narratives on symmetry through cultural dynamics, wisdom and heritage. The paper revealed that architectural texts approached symmetry in architectural culture knowledge.
