Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Review

Abstract A comprehensive review of the extractive metallurgy of beryllium is presented. Due to the strategic importance and element of secrecy surrounding the metal, any open literature on beryllium is rather limited. However, this review has been made to cover all important aspects of beryllium extraction technology namely, resources of the metal; processing of ores; reduction of fluoride and oxide to get metal and alloy; refining of the metal; post preparation processes to shape metal through powder metallurgical route and preparation of foils and ceramics. Special attention has been given to the topic of toxicology and pollution control. Recyclfng of beryllium will form the concluding section. Information on the removal of impurities during the preparation of intermediate products as well as during reduction to metal and its alloys are described with process principles. Thus this review, with the help of discussion on each unit process and at the same time emphasising on the problems faced in large scale handling of this toxic metal and its compounds, shall provide substantial information presently available on the extractive metallurgy of beryllium.

Beryllium Extraction—A Review

Abstract Basic studies have been carried out on the high active PUREX raffinate to determine the distribution characteristics of actinides in different extraction systems. The data have been utilised in conducting a series of counter-current extraction experiments, which have led to the establishment of a viable flow-sheet based on a unique PNC salt-free process, that has great potential in minimizing secondary radioactive waste generation. The process was successfully applied to the present purex system, and a decontamination factor DFαof > 103 has been achieved resulting in the formation of a much less toxic HLLW. NMR studies carried out on the Ln Complex extracts have yielded valuable data on their thernio chemical and activation parameters. Consideration on the mechanism of degradation/regeneration/decomposition of TRUEX Solvents are also included.

ABSTRACT This study presents an up-to-date review on the methods and technologies applied for the recovery of Co from end-of-life Li-ion batteries. Considering the upcoming world demand for electric vehicles, it has been demonstrated that Co recycling from such batteries is technically feasible and vital in an attempt to provide a global supply of the metal. In this study, a number of recovery methods (including thermal, mechanical, and manual preprocessing, along with pyro- and hydrometallurgical methods) with distinct efficiency levels was described, several of which may be combined and associated between them in order to improve the overall Co separation and recovery performances.

Hydrometallurgy is the major part in the extraction flow sheet of beryllium from beryl ore. The overall process aims at converting the beryllium values of the ore into ammonium beryllium fluoride which, on thermal decomposition, yields anhydrous beryllium fluoride—a common intermediate for the production of beryllium metal and its master alloys. This paper gives the details of the individual steps and discusses the processes developed to standardize the production of ammonium beryllium fluoride from Indian beryl. It also highlights the safety measures adopted and the waste management practice followed during the production of this double fluoride.

In this study, pyrite flotation in seawater in the presence of Cu2+and Pb2+ and the underlying mechanisms were investigated systematically. Flotation results indicated that Cu2+ and Pb2+ increased pyrite recovery from 52.51% to 79.45% and 72.57% in weak alkaline seawater (pH 8) due to the increased surface hydrophobicity. Solution species distribution and electrochemical studies cross-confirmed that the Cu2S and Pb(OH)2 layer formed on the pyrite surface at pH 8, subsequently increasing the adsorption sites of xanthate on the pyrite surface. Differently, the pyrite flotation remained at a lower recovery of around 20% than that with the addition of 10−7–10−5 M Cu2+ and Pb2+ in strong alkaline seawater (pH 10). No activation species were adsorbed on the pyrite surface at pH 10 due to the coverage of hydrophilic precipitation on the pyrite surface, resulting in a poor floatability. This study therefore provides scientific guidelines for pyrite separation in seawater in the presence of Cu2+ and Pb2+.

A novel compact and efficient pulse bed mineral scrubber (PBMS) has been designed. The scrubber has a hybrid design incorporating a U-type particle flow path, bed pulsation like a jig and fluidization. The hydrodynamic characteristics and response of this scrubber for the scrubbing of low-grade iron ore fines have been reported in this article. The response methodology with a central composite design was used to evaluate the hydrodynamics of the PBMS hutch section. The results indicate that the hydrostatic head increases with an increase in solid percentage in the hutch section and decreases with an increase in pulsation frequency. The pressure and load model prediction matched the experimental data well. The model predicts that at 54 rpm pulsation frequency and a 25% solid percentage, the pressure will be 0.0285 bar and the motor load 25.54 W. The R2 of the pressure and load model are 0.9536 and 0.9936, respectively. Scrubbing performance on −10 mm iron ore fines with 54.17% Fe, 8.15% SiO2 and 12.75% Al2O3 at 10, 15, and 20 l/min water rate has been validated with characterization of products after scrubbing. The desliming efficiency of the particle in the range of 0.045–0.3 mm is ± 88% at a water rate above 15 l/min. The best cleaning and segregation of fines are reported at a 15 l/min water rate. The Fe value of clean coarse products increases from 54% to 59%. The scrubbing improves the grade of ore, and the alumina and silica content reduction is 19% and 40%, respectively.
