Coastal Management is an international peer-reviewed applied research journal dedicated to exploring the technical, applied ecological, legal, political, social, and policy issues related to the use of coastal and marine resources and environments worldwide. The journal provides timely information on management tools and techniques, as well as the latest findings from research and analysis directly related to management and policy. Findings must be based on current peer-reviewed literature and relevant research. Articles must include clear and relevant management components. Research of interest to an international readership is prioritized, but case studies are accepted if conclusions are drawn from acceptable assessment methods, reference comparable cases, and are related to peer-reviewed research.

Coastal Management

Abstract Over the past several decades, human activities have had significant impacts on coastal wetlands worldwide. Here, using a model of "Drivers-Pressures-State-Impacts-Responses (DPSIR)" and data collected from coastal wetlands in Xiamen, China, we have analyzed temporal changes in regional coastal wetland ecosystem structure and function from 1950 through 2005. The study period was divided into four parts for comparative analysis: pre-1980s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000 to present. Our results show that anthropogenic drivers of coastal wetland degradation in this region have increased substantially since 1950, and that this is correlated with a decline in coastal wetland function over the same period. Quantitative assessment of coastal ecological sustainability development has received increasing interest in regional sustainable development research. It has a strategic value in guiding coastal zone management. We apply the Coastal Development Index (CDI) to quantify the ecological sustainability development in Taiwan coastal zone from 2000 to 2019. The results reveal a relatively high level of ecological sustainability with an overall inverted V-shaped trend in Taiwan coastal zone during this period. The coordination between environmental protection and economic growth in Taiwan coastal zone has experienced an uncoordinated → coordinated → uncoordinated process. Tracking the index of six sub-indicators shows some issues such as over-focusing on quantity rather than quality in coastal protection and facing a "green trap" in economic development. Moderate economic growth is crucial to realize the ecological sustainability development in Taiwan coastal zone. This study demonstrates the value of CDI in the quantitative assessment of ecological sustainable development with a detailed case study in Taiwan coastal zone. It also provides long-term historical data and information on Taiwan region, which may contribute to promoting coordinated development on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

The accelerated impacts of climate change in waterfront areas and the proven inefficacy of the aging hardened shoreline infrastructure have driven shoreline management practices to evolve toward the enhancement of ecosystem services at the land-water interface. Gaining momentum as an adaptive approach in regenerative projects, living shorelines are comprised of natural ecosystem components used in combination or in place of traditional hard engineering methods to provide coastal protective services and erosion mitigation. The success of living shorelines in protecting shoreline property and ecosystem integrity varies based on the biogeomorphology and hydrology of the region and is also heavily reliant on social acceptance of the chosen approach and best practice for implementation. The relatively lower lifecycle cost and associated co-benefits of living shorelines have well positioned them as a promising alternative approach in theory. There are, however, gaps in regional long-term datasets and evidence-based guidelines. This research provides an overview of the underlying geopolitical readiness for integrating nature-based solutions in climate adaptation strategies within shoreline municipalities based on a comprehensive literature review complimented by expert interviews. The synthesized data can inform decisions for minimizing the destructive effects of traditional shoreline erosion prevention approaches and encourage successful implementation of solutions that offer ecological, health, social, and economic benefits.
