PURPOSES
To evaluate the concordance and repeatability of two in vivo methods for dental color assessment and to clarify the influence of different ambient light conditions and subject's head position on the assessed color variables.


METHODS
Color assessments were performed by two examiners on 16 arbitrarily selected subjects under two different, standardized conditions of illumination and at two different standardized head angulations. CIE (L*a*b*) data for upper and lower central incisors were recorded in two different ways: (1) by an intra-oral contact dental colorimeter and (2) by processing digital images for performing color calculation using Adobe Photoshop software. The influence of the different ambient conditions on both methods, as well as the concordance of measurements was analyzed statistically using several mixed linear models.


RESULTS
Ambient light as a single factor had no significant influence on maxillary L*, a* and b* values, but it did have an effect on mandible assessments. Head angulation variation resulted in significant L* value differences using the photo method. The operator had a significant influence on values a* and b* for the photo method and on a* values for the colorimeter method. In fully lit ambient condition, the operator had a significant influence on the segregated L*, a*, and b* values. With dimmed lights, head angulation became significant, but not the operator. Evaluation of segregated L* values was error prone in both methods. Comparing both methods, deltaE values did not exceed 2.85 units, indicating that color differences between methods and recorded under varying ambient conditions were well below the sensitivity of the naked eye.

To evaluate two agents for bonding denture bases and teeth manufactured either by stereolithography (SLA) or by the subtractive mixed technique.Two types of cylinders [small for the tooth resin and large for the base resin) were designed using CAD software according to the ANSI/ADA 15-2008 (R2013)] specification. For SLA manufacturing, 30 small cylinders were shaped with Denture Teeth resin and 30 large cylinders with Denture Base resin. For the mixed technique, 30 large cylinders were manufactured by SLA with V-print dentbase resin, and 30 small cylinders were milled with a CediTEC DT disk. Half the specimens were bonded with liquid Denture Base resin and half with CediTEC Primer and Adhesive, according to the manufacturers' protocols. Shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine. The failure mode was noted for all the specimens.The shear bond strength values were not significantly different between the groups (P> 0.05). Specimens bonded with liquid Denture Base resin displayed cohesive failure (P> 0.05, ×²= 0). Of the specimens bonded with CediTEC Primer and Adhesive, cohesive failures were observed with five specimens manufactured with the SLA technique and one specimen manufactured with the mixed technique (P> 0.05, ×²= 3.33). The Chi-square test results were significant between groups with different bonding agents regardless of the technique used (P< 0.001). Within the limitations of the present study, even if the shear bond strength values were similar, the failure mode analysis suggests that the uncured liquid Denture Base resin may be more effective than the CediTEC Primer and Adhesive for bonding denture bases and teeth manufactured either by SLA or the mixed technique.The present study suggests that the uncured liquid resin (Denture Base) used as a bonding agent and the denture base and tooth materials (V-Print and CediTEC DT) manufactured by SLA and the subtractive technique are clinically compatible.

Impact of type of bonding agent on adhesion of CAD-CAM denture bases and teeth manufactured using different techniques: A preliminary study.

This in vitro study evaluated the effect of sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) concentration on adhesion between two layers of irreversible hydrocolloid wash impression material.The first layer of irreversible hydrocolloid was brushed with three concentrations (0.1, 0.7, or 7.0 wt.%) of Na₂CO₃. Irreversible hydrocolloid not brushed with Na₂CO₃ was used as a negative control. Adhesion between the two layers (bond strength and adhesion energy) was then evaluated using a traction test, and the fracture modes were identified. The results of traction test were analyzed with a one-way ANOVA followed by a Tukey post hoc test. Chi-square test was used for analyzed failure mode after testing (α= 0.05).The bond strength (0.034 ±0.005 MPa) and adhesion energy (60.240 ±12.817 J.m⁻ ²) of the 0.7% Na₂CO₃ group were significantly higher than those of the other groups (P< 0.05). The 0.7% Na₂CO₃ group displayed only cohesive failure (×²= 16; P< 0.0001).Conditioning the surface of the first layer of irreversible hydrocolloid with 0.7% sodium carbonate improved adhesion between the two layers and may help clinicians improve the quality of the preliminary impressions of removable complete dentures.

PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of Carica papaya mouthrinse as an inhibitor of Streptococcus mutans. METHODS This was a double blind (subject and evaluator) randomized controlled trial in 40 subjects distributed in two groups: Carica papaya mouthrinse intervention (n= 20) or chlorhexidine (n= 20). The antibacterial effect was determined by counting colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/ml) of S. mutans in saliva sample cultures; taken both before mouthrinse, immediately after 10 minutes mouthrinsing, and 8 days after mouthrinsing. The data was statistically analyzed with Student's t-test (P ≤ 0.05). RESULTS The difference before and immediately after (10 minutes) use of Carica papaya mouthrinse was of 764 CFUs. After 8 days use the difference was 212 CFUs. For the control group (0.12% chlorhexidine) the difference before and immediately after use (10 minutes) was 683 CFUs. After 8 days use the difference was 455 CFU. When comparing between groups applying t-test, no statistical differences were found in the (CFU/ml) of S. mutans before and after 10 minutes mouthrinse (P= 0.8060), 10 minutes and 8 days after mouthrinsing (P= 0.7104) before and 8 days after mouthrinsing (P= 0.4419). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Carica papaya could be an alternative mouthrinse for the inhibition of Streptococcus mutans.

Purpose To track plaque scores on a subset of teeth in general dental practice patients to determine if plaque scores could improve along with periodontal, restorative and extraction outcomes. Methods Percentage of surfaces with subgingival plaque were recorded and graphed on five teeth (#3, 8, 14, 19, 30) at each appointment, followed by focused oral hygiene instructions, in 343 patients over a 5-10-year period. Patient age, gender, prophylaxes/year, and experimental teeth periodontitis stage, % 4-5 and ≥ 6 mm pockets, % bleeding on probing, % surfaces restored and patients with extractions were recorded. Relationships among average plaque scores and the longitudinal periodontal, restorative and extraction changes were analyzed using Chi-Square, Kruskal-Wallis, and Wilcoxon Rank Sum tests. Results Plaque scores improved from median 40% to 25% (P 50% plaque surfaces). Furthermore, good plaque scores (≤ 25%) and periodontal health (Stage I) were linked to the need for few restorations (P Clinical significance In a general dental practice, tracking plaque scores at each appointment on a subset of representative teeth can be time-efficient, and is associated with improved oral hygiene, stable periodontal status and reduced restorative needs.

Association of tracking oral hygiene with dental outcomesin a general dental practice

PURPOSE To evaluate color and gloss changes of three different resin composites after staining and whitening. METHODS 57 disc-shaped composite samples were made for each of three resin composite materials [Activa BioActive Restorative (Activa), Filtek Supreme (Filtek), and TPH Spectra (TPH)], producing 19 samples per composite (n=19). Each group of resin samples was divided among four solutions: red wine, coffee, tea, and water (control), producing six samples per staining group (n=6) and one control (n=1). Samples were stained for 40 days for 3 hours/day at room temperature. When not undergoing staining/whitening, samples were stored in DI water at 37°C. Measurements were obtained for color and gloss before staining, after staining, and after whitening. Illuminant source specular component excluded (SCE) and included (SCI), with both CIE L*a*b* and CIE 2000 L*C*h* systems, were obtained with colorimetric measurements. The standard ΔE (total color change) = 3.3 was used as a clinically acceptable value. Stained groups were divided into two groups (n= 9 each) for each whitening product: Opalescence Boost and Opalescence PF. Both were applied according to manufacturer's instructions. RESULTS Staining of all samples consistently showed decreased lightness. Filtek showed the most colorimetric changes, especially with wine, while TPH and Activa composites showed few changes; most changes were with tea. Whitening altogether showed generalized increased lightness. All Activa specimens returned to clinically acceptable levels, but the other two materials tested varied. Gloss was most affected for TPH, followed by Filtek; and gloss improved with Activa groups. Overall, Filtek's color varied most, with Activa and TPH being less. All Activa groups returned to clinically acceptable values. However, multiple TPH and Filtek groups had ΔE> 3.3. Furthermore, TPH had the most gloss changes. Activa composites appeared the most stable under the conditions of this study. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Clinicians should be aware that resin composites can undergo staining from a variety of sources. Some resin composites can return to their original esthetic appearance after using bleaching agents. In addition, staining beverages can affect the gloss of the resin composite.
