ABSTRACT Rapidly solidified ribbons of a variety of niobium-based alloys have been produced by electron beam melting and splat quenching (EBSQ) onto a rotating copper disc. Microstructural analysis of the beneficial effects of rapid solidification can be performed on the as-solidified and heat treated ribbons. Ribbons can be reduced to particulates and consolidated into a fully dense billet using conventional powder metallurgical techniques such as hot isostatic pressing (HIP).

RAPID SOLIDIFICATION PROCESSING OF NIOBIUM-BASED ALLOYS

ABSTRACT This paper summarizes some of the pioneering work done in developing the processing techniques to consolidate metal and ceramic matrix composites with 3-D braided fiber architecture. The 3-D braided fiber architecture features a fully integrated structure with multidirectional reinforcement and allows for the braiding of complex shapes. For metal matrix composite, a 3-D braided AI2O3 fibers preform reinforced Al-Li matrix composite has been successfully fabricated by liquid vacuum infiltration methods. For ceramic matrix composites, chemical vapor infiltration technique has been used to densify a 3-D braided Nicalon fibers preform with SiC matrix composite. A significant improvement in composite performance can be achieved through the architecture of 3-D integrated reinforcement geometry. The future needs and directions for developing viable methods for fabricating strong, tough high temperature composites with 3-D reinforcements is also discussed.

ABSTRACT The basic physical properties and steps in the manufacture of zirconium and important zirconium based materials are discussed. Once considered prohibitively expensive for structural use, its current cost is becoming competitive with other special alloys for various industrial applications. Its actual life cycle cost in many cases has been considerably lower than that experienced with alternative materials Physical properties which combine to make zirconium attractive include: high strength, particularly when alloyed, outstanding resistance to many forms of corrosion in marine, industrial and most other environments, superior fatigue resistance and good metallurgical workability. Its oxide compound, zirconia, has become a base material for a new generation of tough ceramics. These ceramics are also candidates for fiber reinforcement. Several modern ceramic fabrication techniques are discussed This review is a compilation of data and information from various sources concerning the physical properties, manufacture, and availability of zirconium and zirconium based materials. It is not intended as an exhaustive analysis of the subject. Rather, it should serve as a convenient introduction for those interested in this group of increasingly attractive alternative structural materials.

PROCESSING AND USE OF ZIRCONIUM BASED MATERIALS

ABSTRACT Diamondlike films have unique properties that can be tailored between those of diamond and those of graphite to meet industrial applications. The purpose of this review is to emphasize the ability to prepare films with specific properties through control of the deposition parameters. The three basic approaches, plasma deposition, chemical vapor deposition, and ion beam deposition, are presented. Since the first two methods consist of complex chemical-physical systems which limit the possibilities for controlled parametric studies, the focus herein is on the latter technique. This work presents the unique capabilities of mass-selected carbon ion beam deposition in controlling deposition parameters over a wide range, particularly when combined with in-situ analysis of film evolution. The role of different deposition parameters on diamond film growth is discussed. The Houston deposition system that manifests the above features is described. A summary of results of some ongoing experiments is given to demonstrate the system capabilities for both parametric studies of diamondlike film growth and actual production of diamondlike films. ABSTRACT A high performance composite material consists essentially of aligned, continuous carbon, glass, aramid or ceramic fibres in a thermoset or thermoplastic matrix. The types, advantages and disadvantages of the various matrices available which can operate at elevated temperatues are described, particular attention being paid to the work of fracture. The main fabrication methods for both types of material are outlined and Some fracture properties for composites together with illustrations of the effects of short term temperature exposure on the modulus, strength and interlaminar shear strength, are provided.
