Childhood

In their everyday lives, children largely stay within and relate to three settings – their homes, schools and recreational institutions. These environments have been created by adults and designated by them as ‘places for children’. A more differentiated picture of children’s spatial culture emerges when children discuss and take photographs of settings that are meaningful to them. This article applies the concept ‘children’s places’ to explain the fact that children relate not only to official places provided by adults, but also to informal places, often unnoticed by adults. The analysis sheds light on interfaces and discontinuities between ‘places for children’ and ‘children’s places’ and argues that the concept should not be underestimated in the sociology of childhood.

If it is dehumanising to refer to an adult with it, why is it applied happily to their children? The use of the neuter pronoun it to refer to children is an understudied aspect of English pronoun use. This paper explores this usage in the Aotearoa/NZ news media. It shows that the pronoun is used in more contexts than the literature suggests and there may be diverse motivations for its adoption. Irrespective of speaker intentions, this usage may contribute to deficit views of children, portraying them as lesser humans through association with the non-human entities to which it typically refers.

Is <i>it</i> OK? The use of the English neuter pronoun <i>it</i> to refer to children

The article reports on a study that explores children’s epistemologies of the environment. We drew on Nxumalo’s (2016) concept of ‘refiguring presences’ as a conceptual and methodological orientation. Such an orientation develops an expansive understanding of voice, encourages researchers to resist absences and erasures, and braids together activities of attending, remembering, disrupting, and imagining. Based on a study in a diverse multilingual primary school in the North West of England, we explore children’s relationships with the natural environment with a focus on treescapes. We use an anti-colonial lens and propose a mode of listening to voices in ways that recognise the emergence and entanglements of data, distributed stories, knowledge systems and concepts in ways that challenge neat theorisations about children’s relationship with the environment.

Attending to children’s voices within environmental education

This qualitative study explored the challenges faced by refugee children in Norway and analyzed how they coped with them. We conducted interviews with 23 children between the ages of 7 and 13. The findings showed that these children struggle with language barriers, outsiderness, bullying, and longing. They utilized both personal and interpersonal resources through active and passive methods to cope. The findings indicated that the experiences of these children were influenced by larger societal structures that limited their autonomy. We recommend incorporating the perspectives of refugee children at all levels of the system to empower them and enhance their well-being.

The voices of refugee children in Norway: Coping with language barriers, outsiderness, bullying and longing

Childhood studies is a field invested in history. This article positions histories of childhood within the context of anticolonial theory of the human, grounding the emergence of dominant Western stories of childhood in relation to Sylvia Wynter’s theorization of Man. Weaving together critical theory, theorizations of childhood, and epistemological challenges to childhood studies, this work illustrates the ways that childhood becomes knowable through the colonial and racial violence embedded in Western ideas of the human. This larger history provides context for the exclusionary nature of Western childhood and also points to childhood as a critical site for undoing Man.

Histories of childhood and man: Implications for childhood studies

This article discusses child welfare in the Polish-Ukrainian borderlands in communist Poland after the Second World War. The author analyses the provision practices to the multinational cohort of borderland children, which were delivered amid massive movements of populations, military contestation of the newly drawn Polish-Ukrainian border and a radicalisation of the Polish state’s understanding of citizenship. The study argues that while communist Poland framed child welfare as an age-based category of assistance, the engagement with minors’ ethnic, national and cultural characteristics would become increasingly prominent in shaping the central state and local providers’ patterns of provision.
