Applied Composite Materials

Abstract Two different experimental techniques are employed to visualize the impact damage generated by a low-velocity impact on a carbon-fibre reinforced-polymer (CFRP) composite laminate. At the relatively low impact-velocity of 1.69 m.s −1 , and a corresponding impact energy of 7.5 J, used in the present work the damage induced in the CFRP panel is barely visible to the naked eye but the techniques of ultrasonic C-scan and X-ray computed tomography (CT) can detect the damage that has occurred. This damage is mostly interlaminar damage, i.e. delaminations, between the plies due to a change in modulus from one ply to the next in the laminate. This interlaminar damage is usually accompanied by intralaminar damage, e.g. matrix cracking, in the ply itself. The type and extent of damage detected from using these two techniques is discussed and the relative merits of these techniques are compared. In general, the CT gave the better resolved picture of damage but the lateral extent of the damage was underestimated relative to C-scan which was more sensitive to very fine delamination cracks. In addition, a numerical approach, based on a finite-element analysis model, is employed to predict the type, location and extent of damage generated by the impact event and the modelling predictions are compared to the experimental results.

The in-plane and interlaminar characteristics of plain weave fabric Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites are studied. The influence of the temperature exposure, below the glass transition state of the composites, on these properties are studied. The in-plane shear properties, shear strength and shear modulus are affected by the temperature exposure. The in-plane shear strength has dropped by 44.36% for the specimens tested at 120 °C compared to the specimens tested at room temperature. The interlaminar shear strength, however, are largely unaffected by the temperature exposure. The interlaminar shear strength of the plain weave fabric CFRP largely depends on the cross-sectional area of the specimen than the temperature exposure. Finally, several prediction models are used for estimating the shear properties of the composites exposed to different temperatures. Among them, Hawileh model fits very well with the experimental data for predicting the in-plane shear strength, while Wang model fits well for the shear modulus. In addition to these, fracture surfaces of the in-plane shear and interlaminar shear specimens are characterized under optical microscopy to understand the failure modes and how they are influenced by the temperature exposures.

About Shear Properties of Plain Weave Fabric CFRP at High Temperatures: Analytical and Experimental Approaches

Abstract Flax fiber-reinforced composites (FFRCs) must be resistant to environmental conditions to use them for external components in aviation. It was investigated how contact with typical aviation liquids, i.e. water, jet fuel and hydraulic oil, affects the optical and mechanical properties of twill fabric epoxy resin-based FFRCs. These influences were compared to the effect of UV weathering. Samples were exposed to these conditions for up to 28 days at RT. Uncoated samples with different fiber contents served as references and were compared with coated samples. A polyurethane/epoxy-based aircraft coating system and a partially biobased automotive interior coating as a more sustainable alternative were examined. The main damage for the uncoated samples was caused by UV weathering and water. UV light leads to photo-oxidation, causing material erosion. Water is absorbed by the hydrophilic flax fibers. Subsequent swelling leads to deformation and delamination. Thus, the damage was more severe for a higher fiber content. No effect could be demonstrated by immersion in jet fuel and hydraulic oil, as they are hardly absorbed by the fibers. Both coatings showed good protection against UV weathering and delayed water absorption. Nevertheless, mechanical damage was found for the FFRC covered with the fossil coating after 28 days of immersion in water. FFRC with an appropriate coating could therefore be suitable for use in aviation, but prolonged contact with water should be avoided. Protective measures should focus on preventing water uptake and UV irradiation, as these cause significantly more damage than jet fuel and hydraulic oil.
