The goal of this paper is to describe right-dislocation in Catalan from a quantitative and qualitative corpus. Right-dislocation is the non-canonical construction in which a pronoun in the main clause is coreferential with a final noun phrase. Although right-dislocation is very frequent in Catalan, especially in oral language, it has been little studied. The corpus consists of 93 right-dislocations, coded according to three parameters. The main focus of analysis is the type of information found in right-dislocation and the motivations for this construction. The analysis compares right-dislocation with other rhetorical alternatives that the speaker might have used to convey the same information: a sentence with a pronoun and without a displaced constituent or a sentence with a canonical order. I argue that right-dislocation in Catalan is a means to structure information and to create the necessary pragmatic and semantic effects needed in the context.&#x0D; Keywords: Catalan, pragmatics, right dislocation, information packaging, information structure.

The Jaussely Plan (1907) and the “Reforma”, later to be called Via Laietana (1908), are two important urban projects that significantly transformed the city of Barcelona at the beginning of the 20th century. In this contribution, we summarize and comment on what Joan Maragall said on these projects through his articles and poems. He reveals himself to be a strong supporter of these developments and of the expansion that the town experienced in those days, which is in clear contrast to the opinions expressed by some of his contemporaries, which were rather skeptical, if not totally opposed. Maragall, however, does not ignore the social conflicts that these urban developments are about to create and already anticipates some of the subjects that he will further develop later on, after the events of the Setmana Tràgica in 1909.Keywords: Joan Maragall, Josep Pijoan, Eugeni d’Ors, Barcelona, Eixample, Pla Cerdà, Pla Jaussely, urbanism.

Few authors are able to represent and exemplify in life the continuity between national literary canon and territorial identity as well as Àngel Guimerà i Jorge (1845–1924). This article sets out to trace the continuities and permanence in Catalan culture of the figure of Guimerà, but at the same to highlight the contrasting or contradictory elements that have characterized public evaluations of his legacy. Beginning with brief consideration of the monumentalization of Guimerà in the early 20th century and immediately following his death in 1924, we will go on to focus on debates around his significance towards the end of the Franco dictatorship, as it was then that new generations of intellectuals and artists who had not directly experienced the civil war would consider the continuing relevance or validity of his writings. This process culminated in 1974 on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his death: when there was open debate in the press about the place of Guimerà in Catalan culture, and, more specifically, on the Catalan stage. Here we aim to contextualise these debates, elucidating both the challenges presented by different aspects of his figure and work for recovery in the Catalan society of the period and the light they shed on the ways in which literary figures are resignified over time.

This paper analyses the main displays of posthumous cults of commemoration for the figures of Jaume Balmes and Antoni de Capmany that took place in Catalonia between approximately 1848 and 1891. Inscribing these tribute initiatives in the wider scholarship on the political uses of death and the public celebration of great men, we identify them as turning points in the cultural practice of public commemorations dedicated to writers, artists and intellectuals. Balmes and Capmany were erected as collective reference points by a significant segment of the Catalan ruling classes who were in some way attached to the liberal regime. In doing so, they sought to provide themselves with prestigious cohesive symbols for a society they wished to distance both from reactionary positions and from revolutionary popular mobilisation. Through the symbolic figures of Balmes and Capmany, the promoters of these commemorative cults were able to shore up their own reputation and claim a leading role within the Spanish nation for the local and regional areas in which they were active.
