Reactive magnesia (MgO) was used as an alkali activator for ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) and its activating efficiency was investigated compared with hydrated lime. GGBS–MgO and GGBS–hydrated lime paste samples with different compositions and different water to solid ratios were prepared and cured for different periods. A range of tests was conducted to investigate the properties and microstructure of the pastes, including compressive strength, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray and thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that the reactive MgO acts as an effective alkali activator of GGBS, achieving higher 28-day compressive strength than that of the corresponding GGBS–hydrated lime system. The extensive microstructural investigation indicated that the main hydration product of reactive MgO-activated GGBS and hydrated lime-activated GGBS systems was hydrated calcium silicate, but there was much more hydrotalcite present in the former, which contributed to its superior 28-day compressive strength.

Properties and microstructure of GGBS–magnesia pastes

A multi-method approach was used for the investigation and comparison of alkali-activated slag binders (AAS), pure slag and ordinary Portland cement (OPC). X-ray fluorescence, X-ray powder diffraction, granulometry, calorimetry, thermo-gravimetric analysis and environmental scanning electron microscope investigations of the microstructure with energy dispersive X-ray analyses were used to characterise the cements and their hydrate phases. In addition, the chemical composition of the pore solution, including the different sulphur-containing ions, was analysed. The precipitation mechanisms during binder hydration in the AAS and OPC systems exhibit significant differences: in AAS the formation of the ‘outer product’ C-S-H is much faster than in OPC. The high Si concentrations in the pore solution during the early hydration of AAS are related to the fast dissolution of Na-metasilicate. The fast reaction of Na is an important factor for the voluminous precipitation of C-S-H within the interstitial space already during the first 24 h. In addition to the Na-metasilicate component, the high fineness of the slag represents a further important factor for the fast hydration of AAS. The small slag particles (&lt; 2 μm) are completely dissolved or hydrated within the first 24 h, whereas hydration of the larger particles is much slower. The fast formation of a gel-like matrix in AAS is the product of a fast ‘through solution’ precipitation, which contrasts with the slower dissolution-precipitation mechanism of a ‘topotactic’ growth of C-S-H in OPC. The chemical and mineralogical characterisation of solid and liquid phases and their changes with time are the basis for thermodynamic modelling of the corresponding hydration process, which is presented in a second paper.

Hydration of alkali-activated slag: comparison with ordinary Portland cement

Pore solution expression (PSE) is the most commonly used method to obtain the aqueous phase in cementitious material. However, the high pressure applied on the sample during PSE can affect the composition of the solid phase. An experimental study on the chemical and mineral composition of cement paste before and after PSE was conducted. The results indicate that a small part of the alkali contained in the samples was excluded during PSE, depending mainly on the alkali concentration in the pore solution. Due to the expulsion of interlayer water in calcium silicate hydrate under high pressure, PSE reduced the bound water content (measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)). The portlandite content determined by TGA was not affected by PSE, but it led to an overestimation of portlandite by means of quantitative X-ray diffraction, because of the enhanced preferred orientation of the (001) plane under the applied high pressure. In addition, the size of the portlandite crystals decreased to some extent due to the creep caused by pressure. The content of the hemicarbonate phase was found to decrease slightly after PSE, which may be due to increased solubility under high pressure.

Effect of pore solution expression on solid composition of cement paste

The effect of temperature, in the range 10–60°C, on the early hydration of two Portland cements from Mexico and three blended cements has been investigated by means of isothermal conduction calorimetry. The blended cements were based on the two Portland cements with partial replacement by ground granulated blast furnace slag, GGBFS (60%), pulverized fuel ash, PFA (30%) and blast and a Mexican volcanic ash (22%). An increase in the temperature of hydration brought about initial acceleration of all five cement systems, as indicated by the increased magnitude of the maximum of peak II and shifts to earlier times. There was a clear contribution from the GGBFS to the heat evolution curves of the blended cement incorporating GGBFS, which increased with increasing temperature. By way of contrast, there was no enhancement of the cement hydration in the early stages of hydration in the case of the PFA blended cement, and the appearance of peak II was slightly retarded. The incorporation of volcanic ash had little effect on the initial hydration, but gave an additional peak after peak II, similar to that observed in the GGBFS system. At this stage, the total heat evolved was greater than that in the corresponding neat cement, especially at 20°C. It has also been demonstrated that alkali activation of GGBFS and volcanic ash was readily brought about by NaOH at 40°C. The enhanced activity observed in the Portland cement–volcanic ash system is attributed to activation of the ash by the portlandite liberated during the early hydration of alite.

The effect of temperature on the early hydration of Portland cement and blended cements

Metakaolin is a supplementary cementitious material with pozzolanic properties. Its activation by calcium hydroxide. sulphates and alkali hydroxide is reported. The extent and kinetics of various competing reactions at an early period of hydration were investigated using calorimetry, supplemented by XRD and DTA data. Theoretical values. obtained for the total heat evolutions using classical thermodynamic methods, were in satisfactory agreement with observed values. The results are correlated with the mechanisms of early hydration.

Cement clinker formation is likely to take place in high temperatures and carbon dioxide enriched atmospheres in carbon-neutral production processes in the future, as part of e.g. electrified processes. The present study aimed to compare the volatilization of minor and trace elements in cement clinker formation in a high carbon dioxide atmosphere and a conventional combustion atmosphere. Raw meal samples were exposed at high temperature to the two different atmospheres, with elemental analysis performed before and after. For both atmospheres, the minor elements potassium and sulphur, and the trace elements rubidium, lead, thallium, caesium, cadmium and mercury were highly volatile. For most of the analysed elements, no difference was observed between the two atmospheres. However, volatilization of potassium, sodium and sulphur was lower in the high carbon dioxide atmosphere. It is suggested that this should be further studied in relation to the molar ratio of sulphur to alkali in the clinker and the effect on clinker quality.

Volatilization of elements during clinker formation in a carbon dioxide atmosphere

There are divergent views in the literature regarding the use of additional water in cementitious materials containing superabsorbent polymers (SAP). The polymer is mainly used to mitigate autogenous shrinkage. Some studies report a decrease in compressive strength and attribute it to the addition of SAP, while others argue that the real issue is the use additional water. The aim of this study is to analyze the state of art regarding the influence of additional water in cementitious mixtures containing SAP and its influence on compressive strength and autogenous shrinkage. Microconcretes and pastes are categorized based on SAP dosages and systematically reviews relevant literature. The methodology employs a parameterization approach for standardized comparisons, considering water-to-cement ratios (w/c) and total water content. Autogenous shrinkage and compressive strength are analysed for each mixture, with and without extra water. Results reveal distinct behaviors, indicating optimal SAP dosages of 0.20% by weight of binder for balancing autogenous shrinkage mitigation and minimal harm to compressive strength. In conclusion, this research contributes valuable insights into SAP's effectiveness in mitigating autogenous shrinkage and provides a foundation for optimizing SAP dosages in different cementitious materials. The findings facilitate informed decisions for durable concrete construction practices.

Impact of additional water on cementitious materials containing sap: effects on compressive strength and autogenous shrinkage

Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide (Mg/Al-LDH) has been claimed as a potential hardening accelerator of cementitious materials. The performance of Mg/Al-LDH modified with polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) adopted into cementitious materials was vitally important, which was urgently necessary to be thoroughly revealed. In this paper, the adoption of four kinds of Mg/Al-LDH-PCE into cement paste has been conducted. The rheological performance and hydration process of cement paste have been analyzed. The results showed that LDH-PCE was advantageous for modifying rheological performance of fresh cement paste. With increased content of LDH-PCE, the viscosity and the yield stress of fresh binder decreased gradually. And LDH3-PCE contributed to the lowest yield stress. The adoption of LDH-PCE prolonged the introduction period of cement paste, but contributed to elevated exothermic peak in the acceleration period and enhanced cumulative hydration heat flow, indicating enhanced hydration of silicates. Due to the enhanced cement hydration with the adoption of LDH-PCE, more hydration products formed in the matrix, and contributed to improved compressive strength. Among the four kinds of LDH-PCEs, the application of LDH3-PCE led to the highest compressive strength of cement mortar at 28d, with 15.6% increment compared with the blank sample.

Impacts of Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide modified with polycarboxylate on the properties of cement paste

Belite-ye’elimite-ferrite (BYF) cement has garnered significant interest as an alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) due to its lower limestone content, early-age strength development, and improved durability. However, the main challenge to the commercial production of BYF cement is the requirement for large quantities of costly aluminous raw materials. The introduction of alpha prime belite (α'C 2 S) to BYF clinker would minimize production costs while maintaining mechanical properties. Herein, α'C 2 S containing BYF clinkers were synthesised and analysed to determine their properties and hydration characteristics. The clinker samples were synthesised using a previously reported clinkering technique wherein a sulfur-containing atmosphere was used, with a raw mix design including additions of a combination of boron, potassium, and sodium-containing doping agents. Preliminary data showed adequate amounts of α'C2S were preserved reaching more than 40 wt.% of total clinker composition. Moreover, the heat release curves revealed enhanced hydration kinetics for the modified clinkers compared to the unmodified ones. While there was a noticeable improvement in ettringite precipitation upon hydration, the precipitation of strätlingite remained the same after doping. The experimental findings showed high potential for the existence of low ye’elimite BYF clinker formulations as part of the wider portfolio of OPC clinker alternatives.

Performance of preserved alpha prime belite phase within belite-ye’elimite-ferrite clinker

Recent dental material advancements have sparked increased interest in dental cements due to their natural tooth-like appearance, biocompatibility, and stability. These cements hold potential in dental fillings, enamel and root protection, and connecting dental implants. However, no single cement fulfills all application needs, necessitating multiple types. Ideal dental cements require resistance to degradation, strong bonding, high strength, fracture toughness, and optical transparency for imaging. In this study, the effect of the addition of ZrO 2 , Bi 2 O 3 , and ZnO on the mechanical was the solid-state method was used for the synthesis of calcium aluminate (C 3 A) cement powder, and additives of zirconia, bismuth oxide and zinc oxide were added at magnitudes of 10 wt.% and 20 wt.%. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), setting time, compressive strength (CS), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) microscopy, and radiopacity evaluation (RE) were performed for characterization and properties evaluations. With the formation of a new phase, C 3 ZA 2 , the compressive strength increased by up to 275% by reducing porosity and stabilizing phase transitions during hydration. The evidence showed that the amount of bismuth oxide and zirconia additive have high optical (7 and 3.5 mmA) and biological properties and a significant impact on strength in dental applications.
