High-value chemical production from natural lignocellulose transformation is a reliable waste utilization approach. A gene encoding cold-adapted carboxylesterase in Arthrobacter soli Em07 was identified. The gene was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli to obtain a carboxylesterase enzyme with a molecular weight of 37.2 KDa. The activity of the enzyme was determined using α-naphthyl acetate as substrate. Results showed that the optimum enzyme activity of carboxylesterase was at 10 °C and pH 7.0. It was also found that the enzyme could degrade 20 mg enzymatic pretreated de-starched wheat bran (DSWB) to produce 235.8 μg of ferulic acid under the same conditions, which was 5.6 times more than the control. Compared to the chemical strategy, enzymatic pretreatment is advantageous because it is environmentally friendly, and the by-products can be easily treated. Therefore, this strategy provides an effective method for high-value utilization of biomass waste in agriculture and industry.

Ferulic acid production from wheat bran by integration of enzymatic pretreatment and a cold-adapted carboxylesterase catalysis.

The purpose of this study is to design and investigate two coupling processes for acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of corncob, achieving the simultaneous preparation of biomass-based furfural and levulinic acid (LA). Meanwhile, high concentration and yield of LA were obtained through a situ feeding strategy of pretreated furfural residue with high solids loading (20%, w/v). In Scenario A, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran was selected as the solvent for the LA extraction process compared with the neutralization process in Scenario B. Techno-economic assessment results show that Scenario A is technically feasible and cost-competitive, with an internal rate of return of 21.92%, a net present value of 121 million US dollars, a carbon efficiency of 72%, an environmental factor of 4.38, and a process mass intensity of 32.19. This study will provide new insights for fully utilizing lignocellulosic biomass to prepare renewable energy resources, comprehensively evaluating the economic feasibility, and promoting green and low-carbon development.

Coupling process for preparing biomass-based furfural and levulinic acid from corncob: Extraction, green chemistry and techno-economic assessment.

Chemoautotrophs, the crucial contributors to biological carbon fixation, derive energy from reducing specific inorganic substances and utilize CO2 for growth. However, the release of extracellular free organic carbon (EFOC) by chemoautotrophic microorganisms can inhibit their own growth and metabolism. To reduce the feedback inhibition effect, a low-release biochar (BC-LR) was applied to adsorb EFOC. BC-LR not only adsorbed EFOC, but also selectively adsorbed the main inhibitory component, low molecular weight organics, in EFOC. In contrast, ordinary biochar could not effectively adsorb EFOC and its addition inhibited microbial growth and CO2 fixation. In Transwell culture, BC-LR promoted microbial growth by 190% and CO2 fixation by 29%, and exhibited better economic advantage, when compared with granular activated carbon. These findings provide a novel insight into the interaction between biochar and autotrophic microbial metabolism, offering an economically feasible approach to mitigate feedback inhibition of metabolites and promoting biological CO2 fixation.

Biochar promotes microbial CO2 fixation by regulating feedback inhibition of metabolites.

In this study, a novel biomass pretreatment process using three kinds of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was developed to improve saccharification efficiency and lignin valorization. The major components of xylose residue including cellulose and lignin fractions were released, recovered and utilized. Pretreatment with betaine/lactic acid system at 120 °C for 2 h was found to be the optimal conditions with prominently increased enzymatic digestibility (from 55.3% to 96.8%). The efficient conversion was mainly ascribed to the significant delignification efficiency of 81.6% after betaine/lactic acid pretreatment, which caused incompact structure and corrosive surface of treated xylose residue. The recoverable lignin had high purity, low molecular weight (630-2040 g/mol) and polydispersity (1.07-1.76). Based on the comprehensive analysis, the one-pot DESs system provides us a facile and effective approach for whole components valorization of lignocellulosic materials.

Integration of facile deep eutectic solvents pretreatment for enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis and lignin valorization from industrial xylose residue.

To improve the neutral DES (choline chloride/glycerol) pretreatment performance, three environmentally friendly heteropoly acids (phosphotungstic, phosphomolybdic and silicotungstic acids) were used as catalysts. Pretreatment with silicotungstic acid at 120 °C for 3 h resulted in 97.3% of enzymatic digestibility at an enzyme loading of 15FPU/g substrate, which was approximately eight times more than that of raw samples. More importantly, 80% of glucose yield was obtained within 12 h. Simultaneously, 81.8% of ethanol yield was achieved in the SSSF process. The efficient conversion was ascribed to the significant delignification (89.5%), which resulted in the exposure of more accessible specific surface area. This was attributed to that the proton (H+) from heteropoly acids could significantly contribute to the lignin degradation. Intriguingly, trace acetic acid (0.39 g/L) and HMF (0.21-0.95 g/L) in the pretreatment liquor were produced without any significant deleterious effects. These discoveries provide new insights for efficient biomass conversion under mild conditions.

Heteropoly acids enhanced neutral deep eutectic solvent pretreatment for enzymatic hydrolysis and ethanol fermentation of Miscanthus x giganteus under mild conditions.

In order to develop constructed wetland (CW) with high-rate N and P removal, sulfur and pyrrhotite modified foam concrete (SPFC) was prepared and used as a substrate to construct CW (SPFC-CW). At hydraulic retention time 6 h, SPFC-CW achieved effluent total nitrogen (TN) 9.96 mg/L and PO43--P 0.11 mg/L as influent TN and PO43--P were 24.52 and 1.04 mg/L, respectively. TN and PO43--P removal rates of SPFC-CW were 21.8 and 1.4 g/m2d, respectively. Many precipitates with high content of Ca and P attached on SPFC. Sulfurimonas was the most dominant bacterium, and its relative abundances at upper, middle and bottom of SPFC-CW were 53.8 %, 68.4 % and 87.3 %, respectively. SPFC could slowly release Sn2- and S2O32-, which had higher autotrophic denitrification rate than pyrrhotite and sulfur, and more Ca2+ than foam concrete. In SPFC-CW sulfur autotrophic denitrification and Ca-P precipitation were the major N and P removal processes, respectively.

High-rate nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a sulfur and pyrrhotite modified foam concrete constructed wetland

Utilizing microbial fuel cells (MFCs) technology to simultaneously achieve efficient biopower generation and pollutant degradation is a persistent pursuit. However, the limited rate of extracellular electron transfer (EET) and the availability of electrode materials remain key factors limiting the practical application of MFCs. In this article, modified carbon derived from cyanobacteria is applied to modify electrodes and assemble MFCs. By outputting voltage, power density, chemical oxygen demand removal rate and Coulombic efficiency the excellent bioelectricity performance of the assembled MFCs is demonstrated. The degradation performance of the assembled MFCs on various typical pollutants represented by tetracycline is illuminated, even up to 95.12%. Moreover, the pollutant removal mechanism by assembled MFCs is elucidated, including biofilm community and degradation pathway analysis. In a word, the enhanced EET process and high accessibility make the proposed MFC anode have fascinating application prospects in achieving efficient biopower generation and pollutant degradation simultaneously.

Enhancing electricity generation and pollutant degradation in microbial fuel cells using cyanobacteria-derived biochar electrodes

The urgency to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions has driven interest in sustainable biogas utilization. This study investigates a 1 L enclosed membrane photobioreactor (MPBR) using a microalgae-methanotroph coculture for biogas capture. Operating with a hydraulic and solid retention time of 7 days and a biogas loading rate of 2.7 L /day, the introduction of gas membrane module increased CO2-C and CH4-C uptake rates by 12 % and 50 %, respectively. Biofilm formation on the membrane surface enhanced system performance, with imaging analyses revealing methanotroph predominantly located near the membrane surface and photosynthetic microorganisms distributed throughout. Metagenomic analysis showed shifts in key metabolic pathways, including increased abundance of soluble methane monooxygenase genes and enhanced vitamin B synthesis in the biofilm. These findings highlight the spatial organization and metabolic interactions in methanotroph-microalgae coculture system, providing insights into the role of membrane-induced biofilms in improving MPBR performance for sustainable biogas utilization.

Membrane photobioreactor for biogas capture and conversion – Enhanced microbial interaction in biofilm

Nitrogen removal via anammox is efficient but challenged by their slow growth. Adding granular activated carbon (GAC) increased the total nitrogen removal rate to 66.99 g-N/m3/day, compared to 50.00 g-N/m3/day in non-GAC reactor. Both reactors dominated by Candidatus Brocadia (non-GAC: 36.25 %, GAC: 35.5 %) but GAC improved specific anammox activity. Functional metabolic profiling from metagenomic analysis unveiled that GAC enhanced pathways associated with electron shuttle production, potentially promoting intra/extracellular electron transfer. In nitrogen metabolism, GAC is indicated to facilitate anammox N2H4 synthesis process, and inhibit nitrification and full denitrification processes, functioned by Nitrosomonas and Castellaniella which are more abundant in the non-GAC reactor. GAC also enhanced dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium and partial denitrification processes, providing anammox with NH4+/NO, which was conducted by Anaerolineae members (29.7 % in GAC-reactor and 7.8 % in non-GAC reactor sludge). This research illuminated the intricate microbial nitrogen cycling networks affected by GAC in anammox systems.

Multi-faceted effects and mechanisms of granular activated carbon to enhance anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) for nitrogen removal from wastewater

Hemp has been widely used for cadmium (Cd) remediation. However, its remediation efficiency needs to be improved. Chitooligosaccharides can enhance plant resistance and growth; however, their effects on hemp for Cd-remediation remain unclear. Herein, a greenhouse pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of three doses (0, 22.5, and 45 μg m-2) of chitooligosaccharides (COS), chitin-oligosaccharides (NACOS), and hetero-chitooligosaccharides (HTCOS) on the growth and Cd-remediation efficiency of hemp. Results showed that chitooligosaccharides promoted the antioxidant system and aerial biomass (maximum 84 %) depending on doses and types. COS (22.5 μg m-2 under 60 mg cadmium kg-1 soil), NACOS, and HTCOS significantly elevated the Cd concentration in hemp. Consequently, NACOS and HTCOS (45 μg m-2) significantly increased the average Cd removal up to 61 % and 81 %, respectively, compared with the control. Therefore, spraying chitooligosaccharides can enhance growth and phytoremediation efficiency of hemp by elevating aerial biomass and cadmium concentration of hemp.
