A non-descript doe was presented with a history of full-term pregnancy and abdominal straining. Clinical examination revealed a narrowing of the birth canal and twist of vaginal wall towards the clockwise direction, and the case was diagnosed as right side post cervical uterine torsion. Schaffer’s method of detorsion was attempted and two dead female fetuses along with a live female fetus were relieved. The doe was treated with antibiotics and other supportive therapy for two days. The animal showed an uneventful recovery.

Schaffer’s Method of Detorsion and Delivery of Triplets in a Non-Descript Goat

This study was conducted to find out the total bacterial count and percentage of polymorphoneutrophils (PMN) cells in uterine lavage samples obtained at a weekly interval from postpartum dairy cows and also to find out the correlation between total bacterial count and PMN cells recovered from the uterus of postpartum dairy cows. Twenty-one postpartum dairy cows were divided into two groups viz. group A (without postpartum complication; n=16) and group B (retained placenta/postpartum metritis; n=5) calving. Cows belonging to the group B were administered antibiotics for 5 days after parturition. Samples for endometrial cytology and total bacterial count were collected aseptically by uterine lavage method at weekly intervals from day 21 to 42 postpartum. Data were statistically analysed by using one-way ANOVA, correlation using Statistical Analysis Software, SAS® 9.2 TS Level version 2M2 for Windows (USA). Based on endometrial cytology, the incidence of sub-clinical endometritis (SCE) recorded was 18.75% in group A and 100% in cows with postpartum complications (Group B). Total bacterial count in the group A animals differed significantly (P&lt;0.05) with the group-B animals. However, the difference between the total bacterial counts in group-A animals and diagnosed negative or positive for SCE did not differ significantly. A highly significant (P&lt;0.05 and P&lt;0.01) correlation was found between bacterial load and PMN cells obtained by uterine lavage technique.

Association Between Bacterial Count and Polymorphonuclear Cells in Uterine Lavage of Postpartum Subclinical Endometritic Cows

The research was carried out to study the pregnancy rate and sex-ratio of female calves born through sex-sorted semen in buffaloes. Murrah and graded Murrah buffaloes were inseminated with sex-sorted semen (n=44) and with conventional semen (n=20). Out of which 17 (38.63%) and 9 (45%) buffaloes were found pregnant in sex-sorted and conventional semen groups, respectively. Out of seventeen calves born with inseminations of sex-sorted semen, 15 (88.23%) were female calves while two (11.77%) calf born were male. Out of nine calves born with inseminations of conventional semen, 5 (55.55%) were females and four (44.45%) were male. Female calves born were 32.68 % more in sex-sorted semen compared to conventional semen in buffaloes so female sex-sorted semen should be utilized for production of more number of female calves in buffaloes.

Pregnancy Rate and Sex-ratio of Calves Born to Sex-sorted Semen in Murrah Buffaloes

The Color Doppler study on 6 pregnant ewes was conducted twice a week from Days 20 to 60 post-mating, then at weekly intervals till the end of experiment by the transrectal and transabdominal ultrasonography. In order to evaluate the waveforms and velocity blood flow patterns, peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), pulsatility index (PI) and resistive index (RI), were measured. Data were nalysed by employing SPSS 21. The PSV and EDV increased from 38 to 139 days of gestation. The PI and RI of blood flow showed a non-significant decrease throughout gestation.

A case of fetal dystocia due to breech presentation in non-descript cattle was presented to the outpatient department of veterinary gynaecology and obstetrics, Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex-Referral Veterinary Polyclinic (TVCC-RVP), IVRI with anamnesis of the animal completed gestation and water bag ruptured normally without making any progress toward calving. Per-vaginal examination of the cow revealed fetal tail in birth canal and bilateral hip flexion (breech presentation).The dystocia relieved by obstetrical mutations. The cow was administrated with parenteral antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, multivitamin supplements, along with ecobolics.

Successful management of a case of dystocia due to breech presentation in non-descript cattle: A case study

Full term pregnant buffaloes (n=24) affected with uterine torsion were equally divided into four experimental groups based on duration of uterine duration viz 6-12 hours (Group I); 12-24 hours (Group II); 24-48 hours (Group III) and more than 48 hours (Group IV). The control (Group V) consisted of six normal full term pregnant buffaloes. The experimental buffaloes were treated by modified Schaffer’s method. Those buffaloes, in which detorsion failed following modified Schaffer’s method, were treated by caesarean section. As the duration of uterine torsion increased, there was a corresponding increase in blood glucose levels from Group I to Group IV. There was a definite reduction in serum total protein and albumin concentrations in buffaloes affected with uterine torsion. As the duration of uterine torsion increased, a concomitant increase in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and greater increase in serum creatinine levels were noticed. The mean creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels ranged from 152.71±39.09 to 445.30±44.57 and from 80.84±2.19 to 110.83±2.67 U/L, respectively. The successful detorsion in treatment groups caused drastic reduction in serum CPK and AST values at 24 hours after detorsion and 30 days after fetal delivery. The mean serum cortisol level ranged from 44.02±3.30 to 79.39±1.78 ng/ml in buffaloes affected with uterine torsion and it was 12.17±0.54 ng/ml at 24 hours before calving in normally calved buffaloes. Prior to detorsion in all the treatment groups, tremendous increase in mean serum cortisol levels was observed. It can be concluded that serum biochemical parameters and cortisol concentration may help to predict the prognosis of uterine torsion in buffaloes.

Estimation of Blood Biochemical Constituents and Cortisol as Stress Predictors and Prognostic Biomarkers in Buffaloes Affected With Uterine Torsion

The research work was implemented to study the ovarian dynamics and ovarian arterial blood flow by pulse-wave Doppler form with color Doppler ultrasonography during estrus in Purnathadi buffaloes. The mean ovarian diameter of left and right ovary was 2.27±0.08 and 2.37 ± 0.12 cm of right ovary and mean pre-ovulatory follicle diameter was 1.22 cm during estrus Purnathadi buffaloes. The mean ovarian pulsatility index and resistance index was 1.45 and 0.75 during estrus. The mean ipsilateral (on the side of pre-ovulatory follicle) and contralateral ovarian artery pulsatility index during estrus was 1.63±0.02 and 1.62±0.02. The mean ipsilateral (on the side of pre-ovulatory follicle) and contralateral ovarian artery resistance index during estrus was 0.77±0.01 and 0.75±0.01 respectively. The ovarian artery indices show non significant levels irrespective of presence of pre-ovulatory follicle.

Ovarian Dynamics and Blood Flow Indices during Estrus in Purnathadi Buffaloes

Thirty six post partum anestrus cows were selected for the present research work. Group I (n=12) were treated with CIDR based protocols and Group II (n=12) were administered Ovsynch protocol and Group III (n=12) was kept as a untreated control. In Group I, II and III the values of Hematological parameters like Hb (9.00±0.17, 9.15±0.15 and 8.65±0.30, 8.66±0.20, 8.73±0.20 and 8.25±0.20, 7.76±0.16, 7.69±0.32 and 8.18±0.18 g/dl) RBC (7.28±0.37, 9.15±0.15 and 8.65±0.30, 7.20±0.38, 8.73±0.20 and 8.25±0.33, 5.77±0.32, 7.69±0.32 and 8.18±0.18 x1012/l) and TLC 10.36±0.26, 10.49±0.25 and 9.77±0.40, 9.67±0.28, 9.90±0.47 and 8.08±0.57, 8.29±0.53, 7.98±0.54 and 8.63±0.44 x109/l) on Day 0, 7 and 25 were recorded in Group I, II and III, respectively. Microminerals parameters (μg/dl) like Iron (147.9±4.44, 147.9±4.44 and 150.1±7.84, 143.4±4.5, 158.2±4.65 and 149.4±7.71, 118.6±3.23, 118.6±3.12 and 118.4±3.04) Cobalt (1.8±0.14, 2.2±0.10 and 1.99±0.11, 1.7±0.10, 2.1±0.08 and 1.74±0.13, 1.6±0.12, 1.5±0.10 and 1.6±0.11) Copper (0.65±0.02, 0.78±0.03 and 0.71±0.04, 0.63±0.01, 0.77±0.03 and 0.69±0.03, 0.64±0.02, 0.63±0.02 and 0.65±0.02) and Zinc (87.6±1.18, 104.9±2.00 and 96.4±3.27, 86.7±1.22, 104.7±2.02 and 93.6±2.51, 85.5±1.03, 85.6±1.02 and 86.5±0.92) on Day 0, 7 and 25 were recorded in Group I, II and III, respectively. It can be concluded that the use of different hormonal protocols in postpartum anestrus cows has shown different effects on haematological and micro-minerals parameters.

Management of Dystocia Due to Ventrotransverse Presentation of Fetus in a Mare

The present study was conducted to observe the effect of percoll density gradient centrifugation on quality of semen. Ejaculates were collected by AV method from Sahiwal bulls. X-sperm enrichment was done by percoll density gradient method i.e. 7 layers (70-10%). Centrifugation was done at 750 g (22-24°C) for 15 min. The pellets obtained were diluted in EYC medium. Semen quality was evaluated in fresh semen (Control), in pellet of normal centrifugation (Group I), supernatant of centrifugation in percoll density gradient (Group II) and pellet of centrifugation in percoll density gradient (Group III). To assess the quality of enriched semen pH, mass motility, progressive motility, live spermatozoa %, abnormal spermatozoa %, HOST % and intact acrosome % were evaluated. Number of progressively motile sperms in pellet of X- enriched semen were non-significantly increased and significantly (P&lt;0.05) decreased in supernatant. The abnormal spermatozoa (%) were decreased in G III as compared to G II Live spermatozoa (%) were increased in enriched semen (pellet). Number of Intact sperms decreased significantly (P&lt;0.05) in supernatant of percoll density gradient centrifuged Sahiwal semen. HOST responsive sperms number was not affected after percoll density gradient centrifugation. Thus, the semen quality of X sperm enriched semen by percoll density gradient method (7 layer 70%) was not affected hence it can be used to increase female calves’ birth after A.I.
