Dynamics of benthic inorganic nutrients are key biogeochemical components of sediment metabolism and ecosystems. This study investigated the roles of the bivalve Cyclina sinensis (Gmelin, 1791) and its influence on benthic metabolism, nutrient fluxes and sediment oxygen consumption (SOC) in a shrimp-clam polyculture system in comparison with shrimp culture ponds without incorporating clams, in Ningbo Zhejiang China. The benthic inorganic nutrients fluxes (ammonium-NH4+, nitrate plus nitrite-NO3-+NO2- and phosphate-PO43-) and SOC were measured across the sediment-water interface with dark incubation experiments. The results showed that there were significantly higher nutrient fluxes from the sediment into the overlying water (p&lt;0.05) in the treatment ponds in the order of NH4+ &gt; PO43- &gt; NO3- + NO2-. The SOC varied significantly (p&lt;0.05) and was three-times higher than that of the control ponds. Water quality (dissolved oxygen, pH, chlorophyll-a and salinity) recorded showed slight variations over time but were not significantly different (p&gt;0.05) between the control and treatment ponds. Sediment organic matter and chlorophyll-a concentration measured in the shrimp-clam ponds varied significantly (p&lt;.05) as compared to control ponds. The results of this study suggest that the bioturbation activities by C. sinensis promoted the SOC, sediment organic matter degradation and mineralisation process that increased the exchange of nutrients and oxygen uptake between the sediment and the overlying water.

Impacts of bioturbation by Venus clam Cyclina sinensis (Gmelin, 1791) on benthic metabolism and sediment nutrient dynamics in a shrimp-clam polyculture pond

The annual pelagic fish landings of the country comprising diverse species, increased from0.3 million t in 1950 to &gt;3 million t in 2021, marking a tenfold increase. The pelagic resourcesconsistently constituted over half of the total marine fish landings. Major contributors tothe pelagic landings are sardines, mackerels, tunas, carangids, ribbonfishes, Bombayduck,codlets, billfishes and barracudas. The west coast of India accounts for 60% of total pelagiclandings with the south-west coast comprising of Kerala, Karnataka and Goa sustainingvast shoals of small pelagic fishes thriving in the nutrient-rich upwelled waters. The pelagicfishes play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem, functioning as both prey and predator.Furthermore, the small pelagic fishes serve as sources of protein-rich food for coastalpopulations, and the large pelagic species command lucrative market prices both in thedomestic and export markets. Continuous monitoring of the landings of pelagic fishes isessential for recommending suitable management plans for the optimal and sustainableexploitation of the available pelagic resources in Indian waters. This paper attempts toprovide an overview of the marine pelagic fisheries of India, based on analysis of the fishlandings data across various sectors spanning the period from 1985 to 2021. Pelagic Fisheries of India – An overview

Growth and fishery of Macrognathus aral were studied from an oxbow lake Matwali-Majhariyamaun and the river Dhanauti in Gandak Basin, India based on 367 and 451 specimenscollected from the oxbow lake and the river, respectively through weekly sampling fromJune 2020 to May 2021 . The length-weight relationship revealed negative allometric growth(b&lt;3.0) as W= 0.0051*L (2.82) in lake and W= 0.0045*L (2.85) in the river. The relative conditionfactor Kn was found to be ≈1.0 in both the ecosystems. The age at length zero and themaximum age Tmax were estimated to be -0.312 year and 9.4 years in the lake and -0.328year and 8.8 years in the river respectively. Growth parameters L∞ and ‘K’ were estimatedto be 37.7 cm and 0.32 year-1 in the lake, and 34.3 cm and 0.34 year-1 in the river, indicatingslow growing nature of the species. The mortality rates ‘M’ ‘Z’ and ‘F’ were determined tobe 0.78, 0.95 and 0.17 per year in lake and 0.81, 97 and 0.16 per year in river. Recruitmentanalysis showed a single peak during August in both the ecosystems. Lopt was estimatedas 20.8 cm in lake and 19.2 cm in river. Virtual population analysis (VPA) revealed highestfishing mortality observed in the length groups above 30.0 cm in both the ecosystems. Theoptimum level of exploitation (E0.5) was found to be 0.32 in lake and 0.34 in river, which waslesser than the current level of exploitation. Regional fisheries for cobia (Rachycentron canadum) along the Indian coast was assessedusing length-based stock status indicators. Drift gill nets-cum-hook and line fisheries landedbigger sized cobia as bycatch while multi-day mid-water trawls landed juveniles. Dominantsize groups in the landings along the west coast were 40–160 cm and 60-120 cm on theeast coast. Gear selectivity operating at regional levels because of the multi-gear fisheriesand fishing grounds of the Indian EEZ affects the size distribution of fish caught. Comparedto drift gill net-cum-hooks and line units targeting large pelagics in deeper waters, smallersize groups of cobia dominated as bycatch in trawls. The length at first capture (Lc50) beingsmaller than the estimated length at first maturity of about 60 cm, implementing size-basedoutput controls such as Minimum Legal Size (MLS) is suggested. The indicators for fishingmortality rates (Fmax) on the cobia stocks were on the higher side in certain locations only,but being part of the multi-species bycatch mix, there is little scope to introduce fishinggear regulations solely for cobia. However, the option of short-term, targeted spatiotemporaleffort regulations with fishers’ participation can be explored, based on the stockassessments made at local or regional levels. Stock status indicators for Cobia Rachycentron canadum in the Indian EEZ

Artisanal fishers fishing in nearshore coastal waters off Visakhapatnam using motorisedcrafts and in estuaries of Krishna using non-motorised crafts were selected for the study.Their annual net operating income varied between US$ 469.63 (₹39,040) and US$ 2698.42(₹2,24,320), respectively. Inspired by the potential of cage farming from the frontlinedemonstrations in marine and estuarine waters and after acquiring appropriate skills,15 individuals from the Traditional Fishermen’s Co-operative Society, Visakhapatnamand 76 individuals from Yanadri Girijana Matsya Sakhara Sangam, Krishna embarked oncage aquaculture of Indian pompano in 15 and 70 cages, respectively. Marine cages werecircular (6 m diameter) and estuarine cages were square (5 m X 5 m), and were stockedwith hatchery-produced Indian pompano (Trachinotus mookalee) fingerlings of 22.6 gweight @ 2500 and 1500 numbers respectively, and were fed with floating pellets at 8-3% ofbiomass. Average body weight, survival and biomass production from marine and estuarinecages after eight months of culture were 843 and 666 g, 96.28 and 91.47% and 2029.0 and913.85 kg respectively. Deducting all capital and operational expenses, annual net operatingincome per unit ranged from US$ 1247.44 (₹1,03,700) to US$ 2632.02 (₹2,18,800); whichrepresented a substantial increase from that of capture fishery. Cluster-cage farming, asadopted, did not adversely impact the water and sediment quality. The current researchoffers novel insights into the bio-growth and economic factors pertinent to commercial cagefarming of Indian pompano. Cage farming in marine and estuarine conditions holds a greatpromise as an alternative source of livelihood for artisanal fishers, thereby bolstering theireconomic sustainability. Cage aquaculture of Indian pompano for livelihood diversification of artisanal fishers: Insights from Andhra Pradesh, India

In recent decades, per capita consumption of aquatic foods has been significantly impacted by increased supplies, changing consumer preferences and technological advancements globally. To support the livelihood of the coastal communities, the Government of India has implemented schemes such as Mobile Fish Retail Outlet (MFRO) under the Blue Revolution (BR) and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSSY). MFRO is a mobile kiosk designed to deliver hygienic fresh fish and Ready to Eat (RTE) products to consumers, aimed at increasing fish consumption and providing employment to fishers. Telangana State where the highest number MFROs (150) have been sanctioned under BR scheme was chosen for a study to assess the profile of beneficiaries, operational details and constraints faced by them. Primary data were collected from 30 MFRO beneficiaries using an interview schedule. The profile of the beneficiaries revealed that 73% belong to backward caste and 87% have land holding between 0.01 to 0.02 acres. About 61% of the MFROs are run by both men and women. Results indicated a statistically significant increase in beneficiary’s income and quantity of fish sold after adoption of the MFROs. The study highlighted that MFROs have created entrepreneurship opportunities for both men and women. However, constraints like parking issues, poor battery backup and excess fuel consumption by vehicles were reported. The Arabian Sea, off India’s west coast, is undergoing significant changes due to global climate change driven by rising greenhouse gas emissions and warming waters. This is well evidenced by the increasing frequency of cyclonic events along the coast, with five of the eight cyclones recorded in India since 2019 impacting the west coast. Cyclone Tauktae of 2021 was one of the most severe, with extremely recent cyclonic storms wreaking havoc on India’s southern maritime states. This paper examines the extent of damage that happened to households and livelihood-supporting assets, the socio-economic impacts, the social security challenges faced and the preparedness status in Karnataka’s coastal districts. This study also highlights the socio-ecosystem changes that occurred, as well as the coping strategies used in the maritime state of Karnataka in the context of climate change and proposes strategic action plans aimed at effectively mitigating the impacts of tropical cyclones. Impact of cyclone Tauktae on fishermen’s livelihoodin Karnataka: A climate change perspective analysis

Three species of the Palaemonidae family, namely Macrobrachium dayanum (Henderson, 1893), Macrobrachium lamarrei (Milne Edw., 1837) and Macrobrachium malcolmsonii (H. Milne Edw., 1844) were investigated for their length-weight relationship and exploitation status in the Burhi Gandak River between July 2020 and June 2021. A total of 907 specimensof M. lamarrei, 942 M. dayanum and 962 M. malcolmsonii were collected using trap net (locally named Ghana Jal), Saalbhar Jal, Pelni, Dhonijal and Khorjal and traditional boats such as Nauka and Donga. M. lamarrei was found to be the dominant species among them in the catch composition. Peak landing was observed from June to August. The maximum length was recorded for M. malcolmsonii (16.8 cm) followed by M. dayanum (8.0 cm) and M. lamarrei (6.1 cm). The length-weight relationship of M. lamarrei, M. dayanum and M. malcolmsonii indicated negative allometric growth with slope (b) values of 2.7692, 2.6027 and 2.7513, respectively. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters viz., asymptotic length (L∞), growth coefficient (K) and age at zero length (to) were 5.67 cm, 2.3 y-1 and -0.5913 y-1 for M. lamarrei ; 10.08 cm, 0.990 y-1 and 0.6684 y-1 for M. dayanum and 16.59 cm, 0.730 y-1and -0.7289 y-1 for M. malcolmsonii , respectively. Fishing mortality was lower than natural mortality which was estimated as 1.71 for M. lamarrei, 0.15 for M. dayanum and 0.18 for M. malcolmsonii. The present study revealed that the smaller length groups had higher natural mortality, whereas larger length groups had higher fishing mortality. The current exploitation rate was 0.26 for M. lamarrei, 0.06 for M. dayanum and 0.09 for M. malcolmsonii. The research fills a critical gap providing essential insights into the population dynamics and exploitation of the three prawn species in the Burhi Gandak River, revealing their underexploited status, highlighting opportunities for sustainable harvesting and informed fishery management to support biodiversity conservation and local livelihoods. Length-weight relationship and exploitation of Macrobrachium species in the Burhi Gandak River, North Bihar, India

The study was carried out in Alwara wetland, a seasonally open floodplain wetland connected to the Yamuna River in the Kaushambi District of Uttar Pradesh, - to estimate the fish community structure in relation to habitat variables across three seasons. Altogether, 62 fish species comprising 9 orders, 23 families and 50 genera were recorded, including 5 exotic species. As per IUCN categorisation, 5 species viz., Wallago attu, Ompok bimaculatus, O. pabda, Chitala chitala and Ailia coila are near threatened and Clarias magur is endangered. Cypriniformes (40.32%) were the most dominant order, followed by Siluriformes (22.58%), Perciformes (19.35%), Synbranchiformes (4.84%), Clupeiformes and Mugiliformes (3.23%), Tetraodontiformes and Beloniformes (1.61%). The Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’) ranged from 3.421 (post-monsoon) to 3.877 (monsoon) with an uneven abundance of fishes as indicated by the evenness index (post-monsoon = 0.6951 to monsoon = 0.8186). Water quality parameters were significantly (p&lt;0.05) different across the seasons except specific conductivity, silicate-Si, phosphate-P, and dissolved organic matter (DOM). Certain sediment quality parameters differed significantly (p&lt;0.05) across the seasons. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to study the association of 27 commercially important fish species with 6 important water quality parameters and provided the baseline information on fish community structure. We observed growth and recruitment overfishing, which may affect fish diversity and its sustainable utilisation to support fishers’ livelihoods. Fish community structure in relation to habitat variables in a seasonally open floodplain wetland of the Yamuna River basin of India

Cephalopods are widely regarded as healthy and nutritionally rich seafood resources. This study focuses on analysing the nutritional composition of six commercially important edible cephalopod species viz., Cistopus indicus, Amphioctopus marginatus, Amphioctopus aegina, Sepia pharaonis, Sepia elliptica and Sepia aculeata, from the Malabar coast of the Indian peninsula. The selected cephalopods were determined to be a rich source of protein ranging from 12.41 to 19.02 g 100 g-1. The amino acid profile demonstrated a balanced ratio of essential to non-essential amino acids (0.93-1.63) with a higher concentration of essential amino acids, attributing enhanced biological value of proteins in these cephalopods. S. pharaonis recorded the highest arginine-to-lysine ratio (~1.77), indicating excellent cholesterolemic index. Notably, octopus species had the lowest total cholesterol content (~100 mg 100 g-1) compared to cuttlefish species which recorded higher cholesterol levels (~160 mg 100 g-1). A. marginatus recorded more significant quantities of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (36.85% total fatty acids) among all the species studied. Octopus species exhibited significantly greater Σn-3/Σn-6 ratio than cuttlefish species. The ideal atherogenicity/thrombogenicity indices (&lt;1.0) in the edible tissues of the studied cephalopods qualify these species as potentially healthy food. A. aegina was found to exhibit greater vitamin E (α-tocopherol) contents (17.84 IU), whereas ascorbic acid was pronounced more in A. marginatus (47.06 μg 100 g-1). The higher vitamin D3 content in A. aegina (96.23 μg 100 g-1) among the species studied, highlights its potential role in preventing osteoporosis in adults. Among microelements such as iron and zinc were found in significant quantities in the cephalopod species studied. The findings from the current study provide valuable insights into the nutritional benefits of these species, positioning them as promising candidates for the seafood industry as possible healthy dietary options.
