Annals of Library and Information Studies

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) was launched in 2012 as an initiative to fortify the validity and integrity of academic publishing through author name disambiguation. Less than a decade later, this portal is being actively promoted in an attempt to ensure that academics adhere to this permanent identifier. Without a doubt, a complete, up-to-date and authentic ORCID has value, not only to a researcher, but to the academic community because it allows facilitated online submissions, and links to funding agencies and other profiles. The mandatory requirement of an ORCID account for the submitting or corresponding author, sometimes for all authors, is becoming more common during the submission of manuscripts to ORCID member journals. Not only are there issues pertaining to academic freedom, or unfair treatment of those without an ORCID, there are other highly pertinent, unpalatable, and contentious issues related to ORCID that need greater attention and debate. These include the inconsistent implementation of ORCID among co-authors, the existence of empty or "ghost" ORCID accounts that are uninformative and thus of limited use, and the plausible abuse of ORCIDs to register potentially fake elements. These issues would not only reduce trust in ORCID, which is actively promoted as a tool for maintaining science's integrity, they may land up weakening a publishing system that was meant to be fortified by this initiative. They may also hurt the reputation of valid ORCID users who share a platform with "ghost" ORCID accounts or with fake authors, or authors whose identities are unverifiable.

The study focused on retracted research publications related to COVID-19 from 2020 to 2023. Two hundred eighty records were collected from the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Among these, 182 articles, including withdrawn papers, were selected for the study. The research aimed to identify the reasons for retraction, the number of citations received by retracted articles, the parties responsible for initiating retraction requests, and the top publisher with the highest number of retracted articles. The findings revealed that the journal editors mostly retracted journal articles. The most common reasons for retraction were related to scientific misconduct and issues with authorship. Springer and Elsevier were the publishers with the highest number of articles retracted. Geographic-based results indicated that single-author publications had a higher retraction rate compared to collaborations involving multiple authors. However, there was evidence of strong international collaboration between India and the USA. The study identified the top two core journals for retracted articles: Soft Computing and Journal of Physics: Conference Series. Additionally, publishers like Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley published 36 funded articles which were retracted.

With the increasing popularity of OpenAI ChatGPT, there are concerns about its use and abuse. In this paper, ChatGPT-generated contents are analyzed with randomly selected terminologies related to library and information science discipline. The generated contents were checked through iThenticate, Turnitin, and Urkund software to see the percentage of similarity. Only 7 percent similarity in iThenticate and Urkund and 13 percent in Turnitin was found.

The recent relations between China and Africa are a much-debated topic in international socio-economic and geopolitics. There are many different opinions about the Chinese presence in the African continent. Some see it as a ray of hope for African sustainable development and others contested it as a form of ‘neo-colonism’. It is further argued that along with other forms of China-Africa relationship, countries in Africa can be benefitted from ‘Chinese Aid’ beyond trade or infrastructure development. In this context, this study tries to investigate the Chinese contribution to library development in many countries of Africa. Taking various secondary sources, particularly newspaper content analysis, this study has identified a few cases where China has invested in library development in Africa. It is observed that Chinese aid in African library development comes in three types. In the first type, the Chinese government is directly involved in the construction of libraries, in the second type Chinesemultinational firms are donating books and e-learning materials to the schools and libraries. In the third type, Chinese non-governmental organizations donate books and other materials to the local schools and communities. Chinese aid in library development in Africa will perhaps enhance learning, capacity building, mutual trust, and friendly relationship. In the long run, this will be a win-win situation for both sides to further enhance the South-South cooperation and above all the development of the whole continent.

Knowledge Organization (KO) and Knowledge Representation (KR) have been the two mainstream methodologies of knowledge modelling in the Information Science community and the Artificial Intelligence community, respectively. The facet-analytical tradition of KO has developed an exhaustive set of guiding canons for ensuring quality in organising and managing knowledge but has remained limited in terms of technology-driven activities to expand its scope and services beyond the bibliographic universe of knowledge. KR, on the other hand, boasts of a robust ecosystem of technologies and technology-driven service design which can be tailored to model any entity or scale to any service in the entire universe of knowledge. This paper elucidates both the facet-analytical KO and KR methodologies in detail and provides a functional mapping between them. Out of the mapping, the paper proposes an integrated KR-enriched KO methodology with all the standard components of a KO methodology plus the advanced technologies provided by the KR approach. The practical benefits of the methodological integration has been exemplified through the flagship application of the Digital University at the University of Trento, Italy.
