Leaf color is a crucial parameter in determining the photosynthetic productivity of a plant. We examined 150 intervarietal guava hybrids from the cross Arka Poorna x Purple Local, that were segregating for leaf color (green and greyed purple). Variations in tree morphology, gas exchange parameters and pigment contents were investigated to understand the impact of leaf color on plant growth and physiology. Significant differences were observed in tree morphology between green and purple leaves, with green leaf plants showing better growth and vigor than purple leaf individuals. Photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rates were significantly higher in green plants than in purple leaf plants. In contrast, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, carotenoids, and anthocyanins were significantly higher in the purple plants. These results suggest that the presence of high anthocyanin and carotenoid pigments in purple plants have a masking effect that resulted in high chlorophyll production and low photosynthetic rates due to reduced incident light. The segregating population is an important repository for mapping QTLs associated to photosynthetic attributes.

Exploring the relationship between leaf color, canopy architecture,photosynthesis and pigment composition in guava mapping population

Phalaenopsis orchid is one of the most popular flowers that have a large share of global flower and plant market due to its attractiveness, color varieties, and medicinal properties. In this study, the morphological (capsule length, full weight of capsule, empty weight of capsule, the weight of seeds in capsule and capsule volume) and phenological (time of pollination symptom, time of capsule swelling, and time of capsule ripening) traits of pollination were evaluated in 5 varieties of Phalaenopsis by the first plant pollination syringe of orchids in 5 types of self-pollination and 20 combinations of cross-pollination during 2019-2023. The results showed that 92% of the total variations were explained by the first 4 components in the analysis of the main components. The first and second components accounted for about 57.5% and 19.6% of the total data. Using cluster analysis results, pollination types were classified into three groups based on pollination factors. Discriminant analysis showed that clustering based on the Euclidean distance criterion was better than other distance criteria and was obtained favorably clustering based on it. Low heritability and genetic improvement were observed for time to petal wilting after pollination (TPS) characteristic. Nottingham × Nottingham pollination has the highest amount of capsule length, weight of seeds per capsule, capsule volume, and fresh weight of capsule. Capsule length had the most phenotypic and genotypic variation coefficient among all of the examined characteristics in 25 pollination types. The results of this study are used to select parents and favorable crosses to produce new varieties and capsules containing seeds.

Pollination phenotypes in Phalaenopsis crosses: Guiding selection for optimal breeding

Jamun (Syzygium cumini Linn. Syn. Eugenia jambolana) genotypes collected from different parts of the country were evaluated for in vitro alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity, polyphenolic content and antioxidant potential along with fruit characters. Results indicated significant variation among genotypes for fruit characters, phenolics, flavonoids, antioxidant potential, and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory potential. Total phenolics and flavonoids in seeds varied between 15.5 mg to 98.7 mg GAE/g and 0.79 mg to 9.03 mg CE/g seeds, respectively. The seeds with a high content of polyphenolic compounds required a very less amount of sample to inhibit alpha-glucosidase enzyme. The genotype Selection 45 recorded the highest alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity, and required only 50.3 µg of sample to inhibit 50 % of the enzyme activity. Both phenolics and flavonoids content positively correlated with antioxidant potential and negatively correlated with enzyme inhibitory potential. From cluster analysis, the genotypes AJG-85, Kaithanal, Selection-45, Collection-2, and Konkan Bahdoli were identified as superior genotypes having a considerable amount of seeds with alpha glucosidase inhibitory compounds. These genotypes/collections may be effectively utilized for further studies to isolate and characterize the bioactive constituents with alpha-glucosidase inhibitory potential.

Onion, an important vegetable crop valued for its culinary and medicinal properties, is highly sensitive to water stress, which significantly affects its growth, yield, and quality. In this study, the response of two onion genotypes to water stress was evaluated using a combination of physiological and biochemical parameters, including thermal imaging. The plants were maintained at five different field capacity levels by gradually achieving the desired stress conditions using a gravimetric approach. The results indicated that water stress caused a marked decline in growth parameters, relative water content, and chlorophyll content, whereas, it induced an increase in malondialdehyde content, proline content and the canopy temperature of leaf tissue in both the genotypes. However, ‘Bhima Shakti’ performed better under water stress than ‘Bhima Shweta’. Drought stress at 60% field capacity caused a significant reduction in relative water content (54.03%), along with increased lipid peroxidation (56.1 nanomoles/g) and a higher canopy temperature (38.0°C) in the susceptible genotype ‘Bhima Shweta’. In contrast, the drought-tolerant genotype ‘Bhima Shakti’ exhibited resilience, maintaining higher relative water content (62.25%), lower lipid peroxidation (42.1 nanomoles/g), and a cooler canopy temperature (36.5°C) under the same level of stress. These findings suggest that relative water content, lipid peroxidation, and canopy temperature could be useful screening tools for assessing water stress tolerance in onion.

Detection of onion responses to water stress using physiological andbiochemical parameters

The Physiological responses of African marigold var. Pusa Narangi Gainda was studied under low-temperature stress conditions using chemical elicitors (Chito Oilgosaccharide and Salicylic acid) and bioagents (Arbuscular mycorrhiza) at different sowing dates for two consecutive years (2021-22 and 2022-23) at the Centre for Protected Cultivation Technology (CPCT), ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. The findings revealed that marigold plants grown under low plastic tunnels performed better than those in open field conditions. Among the three sowing dates, October 15th was the most favourable. Regarding treatment efficacy, a combination of 200 ppm Chito Oligosaccharide with Arbuscular Mycorrhiza showed the best results, outperforming the control group and other treatments. This study demonstrates potential strategies for reducing the negative impact of low-temperature stress in marigold.
