Abstract This study investigates the interplay between illicit arms trade, transnational criminal networks and regional security in West Africa, with a particular focus on Nigeria. It examines the sources, drivers and actors involved, highlighting Nigeria’s pivotal role as a source and transit point for illicit arms in the West African subregion. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative data for a comprehensive analysis. Thematic analysis of the data reveals the evolving tactics of transnational criminal networks, including their adaptation to countermeasures and their impact on local conflicts. Statistical methods further uncover previously underreported trends in arms trafficking routes. Notably, the study identifies a significant link between the influx of illicit arms and the intensification of sociopolitical instability in rural areas of Nigeria. The findings highlight the necessity for a multidimensional strategy that incorporates regional and international cooperation to dismantle these criminal networks and address the root causes of the illicit arms trade.

Abstract The growth of manufacturing sector output in Nigeria is currently sluggish, if not stagnant, despite massive inflows of Foreign Direct Investment ( FDI ) as well as macroeconomic policies initiated by successive Nigerian governments. The study investigated how macroeconomic policies and FDI inflows have impacted on the manufacturing sector in Nigeria. The Augmented Dickey Fuller ( ADF ) unit root test was adopted to determine the stationary properties of the data, and the order of integration of the variables was tested using the Johansen cointegration test. The impact and interactions of macroeconomic policies on the manufacturing sector are less understood and shallow in the extant literature. The government’s macroeconomic policies encourage FDI in the communications and oil sector with a negative impact on the manufacturing sector. This is implicated in inadequate capital investments and technological diffusion. Nonetheless, the study shifts the paradigm in popular arguments that FDI is imperialistic, hence universally exploitative, to a new hypothesis that the failure of the manufacturing sector to tap into FDI and yield desirable growth output is linked to less viable globally competitive macroeconomic policy frameworks in Nigeria. The study therefore recommends that the Nigerian government should review its macroeconomic policies, particularly the monetary and exchange rate, and draw up proactive human capital development plans that can directly contribute to the development of the productive capacity of the country’s population.

Abstract This study analyses Ghana’s climate-change legal and policy frameworks, pinpointing significant gaps and offering targeted recommendations to bolster the nation’s resilience against climate change. Despite Ghana’s commitments under international agreements and the formulation of national policies, challenges persist in policy implementation, sectoral integration, research, stakeholder engagement, funding and adaptation strategies. The paper argues for a robust, integrated approach to enhance Ghana’s climate governance, highlighting the necessity for improved implementation capacity, cross-sectoral policy harmonisation, enhanced climate data collection, active stakeholder participation, innovative financing and a stronger focus on adaptation and resilience. Key recommendations advocate for political commitment, collaborative efforts and resource mobilisation to ensure effective climate action. This condensed analysis contributes to the broader dialogue on climate-change management in emerging economies, offering insights for policy-makers and stakeholders on advancing climate resilience and sustainable development.

Abstract Indigenous knowledge is the local knowledge that is unique to a given culture or society. It is the basis for local decision-making in agriculture, medicine, food education, environmental management, craft skills, linguistics and conflict management. The study explored mengehacha , an indigenous system of conflict resolution among the Gumuz people in northwest Ethiopia, which aims to restore peace and harmony within the community when conflicts result from natural resource competition, exchange marriage, clan-based conflict and theft. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, non-participatory observation and document analysis, and analysed qualitatively. The indigenous mechanisms of conflict resolution were found to be relatively participatory and supplementary to the state justice system. It is recommended that indigenous systems of conflict management be supported and given equal treatment with the modern court system and that exchange marriage be curbed, since it is becoming a trigger for conflict eruption among the Gumuz.
