Discovery of Early Paleozoic Garnet Amphibolite in the Wenquan Complex, Northern Margin of the Yili Block, NW China

中国西北伊犁地块北缘温泉杂岩中早古生代石榴角闪岩的发现

Abstract Karst in Vietnam covers an area of about 60,000 km 2 , i.e. 18 % of the surface of the country. The country has an annual average temperature of 24°C, an annual average rainfall of 2300 mm and a relative humidity of about 90%. Karst in Vietnam is typified by peak cluster‐depression landscapes ranging in elevation from 200 to over 2000 m. Tower and coastal karst landscapes also exit. Because of naturally favourable conditions, karst ecosystems are diverse and very rich. Higher plants (cormophytes) are abundant. They are represented by approximately 2000 species, 908 genera, 224 families, 86 orders and 7 phyla. They form a thick vegetation cover of evergreen tropical rainforest. Knowledge about lower plants is limited. The fauna is rich and diverse. Phyla such as Protozoa, Vermes, Mollusca and Arthropoda are yet ill known. Preliminary results show that the phylum Chordata is represented by 541 species from 80 families, 40 orders and 5 classes. There exist many precious and rare mammals, in particular some endemic species such as Trachypithecus poliocephalus, T. delacouri, Rhinopithecus avanculus, Rhinolophus rouxi, Seotoma dineties and Silurus cuephuongensis. The class Insecta has about 2000 species. The fast population growth, particularly in the mountainous areas of the country, triggers an increasing demand for land and therefore threatens the ecosystem. To obtain land for farming, people have cut, burned and destroyed natural forest cover; resulting in occurrence of hazards such as soil‐loss, water‐loss, flash floods, mud‐rock flows, rock‐falls, severe drought, water logging and changes of karstic aquifers etc. Poaching precious animals and illegal logging are increasing. In contrast to other natural systems, karst ecosystems cannot be reestablished once damaged. Living karst landscapes will become rocky desert ones without life. Conservation of karstic environmental systems in general and karstic ecosystems in particular should not be the sole vocation of scientists but also a duty and responsibility of authorities and people from all levels. A good example of a multidisciplinary approach to karst‐related problems is the implementation of the Vietnamese‐Belgian Karst Project (VBEKAP): “Rural development in the mountain karst area of NW Vietnam by sustainable water and land management and social learning: its conditions and facilitation”. The aim of this project is to improve living conditions of local people and sustained protection and management of the karst environment and ecosystem.

Characteristics of Karst Ecosystems of Vietnam and Their Vulnerability to Human Impact

越南喀斯特生态系统特征及其对人类影响的脆弱性

Based on the data of core description and sporopollen analysis, the gradual evolution of deltas in vertical direction and transition of channel types in the MPE3 block of the eastern Venezuela Basin have been surveyed by seismic phase and well logging facies interpretation. The results show that due to the great sea level rise, the sedimentary system of the Miocene Oficina Formation in the MPE3 block shifted from the distal‐source sandy braided river delta to tide‐affected delta, and eventually to tide‐dominated delta. Vertically, during the early stage of sedimentation of Oficina Formation, the distributary channels of the delta were dominated by braided river channels. While in the later stage, as the tidal effect was gradually intensified, the channel changed from braided channel to meandering channel. On plane, as a result of differential transgression, sedimentary framework and distribution of sand bodies vary across the study area. Compared with the eastern part, the western part has more braided channels, larger channel bars, less developments of distributary bay and higher ratio of sand to mud. Whereas the braided channels in the south are larger than those in the north. It is the first time we pointed out the impact of marine transgression differences on the sedimentary facies distribution and river type transition in the study area. Factors like the structural and paleogeomorphological change, sea level variation, supply of sediments have strong influence on the evolution of sedimentary system and distribution of sandbodies. It is predicted that the major sandbody is more developed in the central south, which can guide the subsequent horizontal well development.

Gradual Evolution from Fluvial Dominated to Tide Dominated Deltas and Channel Type Transformation: A Case Study of MPE3 Block in the Orinoco Heavy Oil Belt of the Eastern Venezuelan Basin

从河流主导到潮汐主导的三角洲渐进演变及河道类型转变：以东委内瑞拉盆地奥里诺科重油带MPE3区块为例

Abstract: A great amount of black rock series has been found in the Upper Sinian Members 2 and 4 of the Jinjiadong Formation, middle‐upper Liuchapo Formation and the Lower Cambrian Xiaoyanxi Formation in West Hunan, which is associated with periodic sea‐level changes. By the studies of relationships between the distribution and development of the biota and the abundance of Au, Ag, U, V, Ni, Mo and Cu in the Upper Sinian and Early Cambrian black rock series in Cili, Dayong, Yuanling, Xupu and Qianyang of West Hunan, central China, it has been revealed that the enrichment of Ag, V, and Mo is related with the development of multi‐cell plants and vendotaenides, and that of Cu and Ni is related to flourishing of bacteria and shelly fossils. The black rock series in the study area contains abundant organic matter, among which the siliceous shale contains the highest TOC, amounting to 4.51–13.4%. All the values of the equivalent vitrinite reflectance (medium values) determinated with the IR‐spectroscopic method in the area are over 2.65%, indicating that the organic evolution was at an overmature stage. Due to the effect of enhancement of organic maturation by hydrothermal fluids, the Upper Sinian and Lower Cambrian had a reverse organic maturity profile in most areas of West Hunan. The enrichment of Ag, V, Ni, Mo and U is a result of organic absorption, and that of Au might be attributed to the migration by hydrothermal fluids.

Biota and Organic Matter in the Late Sinian and Early Cambrian Black Rock Series of West Hunan and Its Significance for Metallization

湘西晚震旦世—早寒武世黑色岩系中的生物与有机质及其对成矿的意义

Abstract Fragments of Proto‐Tethyan oceanic lithosphere are well‐preserved along the southern belt of the North Qilian suture, and the origin and emplacement of these ophiolites have become subjects of intense debate. In this study, we integrate field observations, mineralogical and geochemical analyses, zircon U‐Pb dating, and isotopic data to investigate the Yanglong ophiolite. The Yanglong ophiolitic rocks are found as tectonic slices resting on the Neoproterozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks. These rocks are composed of Cambrian serpentinized peridotite, gabbro, dolerite, and rodingite. The spinels in the serpentinized peridotites have variable Cr# values (21, 38–46, and 59–61) and display affinity to those in abyssal and forearc peridotites. The dolerites show slight enrichment in Th and have elevated (La/Sm) N ratios (1.19–2.01), indicating a subduction‐related geochemical affinity. The Yanglong ophiolitic rocks have positive zircon ɛ Hf ( t ) values (+10.3–+18.4) and whole‐rock ɛ ND ( t ) values (+5.3–+6.7) indicating derivation from partial melting of a depleted mantle source. These results, together with the regional geology, collectively suggest that the Yanglong ophiolite was generated in a forearc setting during the Early Cambrian northward intra‐oceanic subduction. It was emplaced onto the Central Qilian Block during the subsequent arc‐continent collision, no later than the Early Ordovician.

Origin and Emplacement of the Cambrian Yanglong Ophiolite in the North Qilian Suture

Abstract Overpressure is widely developed in deep petroliferous strata in the hinterland of the Junggar Basin. However, a comprehensive understanding of its origin and effect on hydrocarbon distribution and enrichment remains lacking. In this study, we employ five empirical methods and comprehensive geological analysis to identify the origin of overpressure, and uncover the effect of overpressure on hydrocarbon enrichment. The results indicate that disequilibrium compaction is not a significant factor in overpressure generation. Instead, hydrocarbon generation, pressure transfer and diagenesis are the primary causes. The empirical methods support this conclusion. There is a positive correlation between overpressure intensity and source rock thickness and maturity. Notably, widespread cross‐formational migration of hydrocarbon bearing fluid occurred, with sandstone overpressure exceeding that of adjacent shale in non‐source strata. Furthermore, there is a distinct transformation from smectite to illite near the top of overpressure. Hydrocarbon generation pressurization and pressure transfer significantly effect hydrocarbon enrichment. The overpressure caused by hydrocarbon generation drives hydrocarbon migration and accumulation, establishing an optimal energy configuration between reservoir and cap rock. Faults play a crucial role in hydrocarbon vertical migration and pressure relief. The overpressure in reservoirs can reduce the porosity and permeability thresholds and enhance the charging capacity of oil and gas.

Origin of Overpressure and its Effect on Hydrocarbon Enrichment in the Hinterland of Junggar Basin, NW China

准噶尔盆地腹地超压成因及其对油气富集的影响

Abstract Fracture effectiveness plays a key role in gas productivity of ultra‐deep tight sandstone reservoirs, Kuqa depression, Tarim Basin. Based on cores, thin sections, well logging, well testing and production data, the study evaluated fracture effectiveness and illustrated its impacts on gas productivity. High‐angle and vertical shear fractures are the most important types. Distribution of effective fractures shows great heterogeneous. Fracture effectiveness is influenced by tectonism, diagenesis and in‐situ stress. Earlier fractures or fractures in close to gypsum rock are easier to be filled. Completely filled fractures can be reopened under late tectonism. Dissolution improves local fracture effectiveness. Minerals spanning fracture surfaces protect fracture effectiveness from late compression. Fractures filled with calcite can be activated by acidification. Effective fractures parallel to maximum horizontal principal compressive stress direction show larger aperture. Overpressure can decrease the effective normal stress to maintain fracture effectiveness. With exploitation, decline in pore pressure reduces fracture effectiveness. Linear density, aperture, and strike of effective fractures influence gas productivity. Effective fractures greatly enhance matrix permeability. Therefore, more abundant and larger aperture fractures are always corresponded to higher productivity. However, effective fractures also facilitate late water invasion, especially, both mutually parallel. Intense water invasion leads to rapidly declines in productivity.

Fracture Effectiveness and its Influence on Gas Productivity in Ultra‐deep Tight Sandstone Reservoirs of the Keshen Gas Field, Tarim Basin

Abstract Hyperpycnal deposits has gradually emerged as a current research hotspot, with a special focus on lacustrine hyperpycnal deposits. However, our understanding of the formation mechanism and distribution of high‐quality reservoirs in hyperpycnal deposits remains insufficient. In this study, the formation mechanism and distribution of high‐quality reservoirs in the second member of the Sangonghe Formation are studied through sedimentology, petrology, and geochemistry, and 10 types of lithofacies were identified in the depositional sequences of the hyperpycnal flow. These can be summarized as gravelly bed to suspended load lithofacies association (GBS), gravelly reverse to normal compound‐graded (GNR), coarse‐grained sandy suspended load (CSS), and fine‐grained sandy suspended load (FSS) lithofacies associations. The hyperpycnal system can be divided into four individual units: restricted channel, unrestricted channel, lobe, and levee. The reservoir quality varies with lithofacies. Gravelly bed load lithofacies has coarse grain sizes, high content of rigid minerals, and soluble components, such as magmatic rock fragments. Therefore, the gravelly bed load lithofacies reservoir has developed dissolution pores and well‐preserved pore throats. Its reservoir quality is good. GBS and GNR are the main lithofacies associations in the restricted channel, where type I and type II reservoirs developed. The unrestricted channel is dominated by the CSS lithofacies association, with type III reservoirs developed. The lobe is dominated by the CSS and FSS lithofacies associations, with type III and type IV reservoirs developed. High‐quality reservoirs mainly develop in the restricted and unrestricted channels, whereas reservoirs in the lobe have poor quality. The levees are dominated by siltstone and gray mudstone and are generally nonreservoirs.

Formation and Evolution Mechanism of High‐quality Reservoirs in the Lacustrine Hyperpycnal System: The 2nd Member of the Lower Jurassic Sangonghe Formation, Qiudong Subsag, Turpan–Hami Basin, NW China

湖相超临界体系中优质储层的形成与演化机制：以吐哈盆地丘东洼陷下侏罗统三工河组二段为例

Abstract The Curvicubitidae is a Triassic cicada family with some taxa systematically debatable. Here a new curvicubitid species, Beaconiella tongchuanensis sp. nov., is established from the Middle Triassic Tongchuan Entomofauna in NW China. Restudy of the two Australian species of Beaconiella Evans, 1963 ( B. fennahi and B. multivenata ) confirms that they are different species and first reveals the hindwing venation of B. multivenata . A detailed restudy of Curvicubitus triassicus Hong, 1984 confirms the treatment of Curvicubitus as a junior synonym of Beaconiella . A key to all the six species of Beaconiella in Curvicubitidae is first given. Although reported from only three sites, the family Curvicubitidae potentially was globally distributed during the Middle–Late Triassic, implying that this family probably originated as early as the Early Triassic or even the Permian.
