"African Entomology" (ISSN 1021-3589 - Print / 2224-8854 - Online) replaced the former Journal of the Southern African Society of Entomology in 1993. The journal publishes two issues annually (in March and September) and is indexed by all major abstracting journals. "African Entomology" is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes original research articles and brief communications on various aspects of entomology, with a focus on advancements in entomology across the African continent.

African Entomology

The taxonomy of horse flies in the Afrotropics has been neglected in recent times. The genus Hybomitra Enderlein is considered to be Holarctic but 15 species are recorded from the Afrotropics. A collecting trip in South Africa led to the discovery of a new species of Hybomitra, Hybomitra phalaros sp. n., described here. Phylogenetic analysis using both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA yields a paraphyletic Hybomitra, comprising biogeographically distinct clades. Taxonomic revision of the Afrotropical Hybomitra is complex due to unavailable type specimens and lack of available material. The whereabouts of these type specimens are discussed, and morphological diagnoses derived from the original descriptions of all the Afrotropical species are provided. The type localities are mapped and discussed in relation to DNA barcoded voucher specimens from the region. Tabanus saxicolus is morphologically evaluated and transferred to Hybomitra as Hybomitra saxicolus n. comb.

The Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP) (Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, 1908) (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) is a major citrus pest. The species has been introduced to West and East Africa, but has not yet spread to southern Africa, where it could have a devastating impact on citrus farming and livelihoods. A proactive response is key to mitigating the species’ impacts, particularly the ongoing monitoring of potential invasion routes and entry points into South Africa. Species distribution models (SDMs) were developed under current and future climates for ACP in Africa, and these models were used to (1) determine where the species likely poses a threat, (2) identify potential invasion routes into South Africa, and (3) assess how these factors will be affected under climate change. The SDMs indicated that there is an almost contiguous band of suitable climate along the east coast of Africa that joins the species’ current range in East Africa to South Africa, and under aggressive climate change a potential route of invasion through Namibia and Botswana. Much of South Africa is climatically suitable for the species, but under climate change, climatically suitable areas are likely to shift further inland. The spread of ACP into South Africa is unlikely to be prevented, but the outputs of the present models will inform monitoring activities and assist with preparations to respond to this predicted biological invasion.

Following copulation, sperm of multiple honeybee (Apis mellifera (A.m.) Linnaeus (Apidae)) drones are mixed inside the spermatheca of a queen, and sperm behaviour in this environment is of importance for sperm survival and successful fertilization. The polyandrous mating system of honeybees further may allow for cryptic female choice and sperm competition to select for specific sperm traits to enable successful reproduction. This preliminary study therefore examined multiple sperm quality parameters in mixed drone semen. Thirty-one drone ejaculates were collected and split to be mixed with one and two other drones’ semen. A computerised sperm analysis system was used for analysing sperm functionality parameters, at baseline and 60 minutes. Morphology measurements included head, tail, and total sperm length. Sperm concentration was significantly higher in three-drone samples compared to other groups (p &lt; 0.001), while comparisons of sperm functional and morphometric parameters did not reveal differences. However, after 60 minutes, mixed semen samples displayed changes in terms of sperm functionality. The motility percentage significantly decreased in two-drone samples (p = 0.004). In contrast, three-drone samples had consistently lower motility and kinematic parameters at baseline, but following an hour it was the only group to show improvement in sperm progressive motility, swimming speed and kinematics. Sperm concentration correlated with the majority of functionality parameters, while, morphological measurements did not. Sperm functionality changes observed in this study, can be attributed to a combination of factors, including, mixing of drone semen, sperm concentration, and time allowing for potential sperm interaction.

The effect of mixed honeybee drone semen on sperm quality characteristics: A preliminary study

The harshest period for honey bee colonies in most countries is the winter season. During this period high percentages of colonies are lost due to low air temperature. Searching for the suitable areas to place bee colonies during winter (wintering) is very essential to reduce colony losses. In this study, several datasets (temperature, precipitation, solar radiation, wind speed, slope, distance from roads, and distance from plants) were analysed to identify suitable areas for wintering of bee colonies in Egypt with a focus on deserts. Indeed, deserts represent the highest percentage of the Egyptian land. The study classified Egypt into three suitability degrees: more suitable, suitable and less suitable. The south and some western areas contained the more suitable areas while some governorates had only either suitable or less suitable areas. The more suitable areas for bee wintering in deserts concentrated mainly at Matrouh and Red Sea governorates, and some areas in South Sinai and Al Wadi Al Gadid governorates. The equal contribution of datasets in the suitability map was tested and confirmed by creating a modified suitability map. It is better for beekeepers to keep their colonies in dry and warm areas during winter. The method presented in this study can be employed by other researchers to boost survival of bee colonies during winter in their countries.

GIS Analysis to Locate More Suitable Wintering Areas for Honey Bee Colonies in Agricultural and Desert Lands

Sub-cortical beetles and mites contribute to tree mortality by creating wounds and by spreading potential pathogens. Here we elucidate associations between sub-cortical beetles, mites, and ophiostomatoid fungi from trees in Afromontane forests in South Africa. Bark and wood samples were collected from native tree species and exotic Pinus radiata and Acacia mearnsii that showed signs of sub-cortical beetle activity, or from wounds on storm-damaged trees. Ophiostomatoid fungi, a group that contains numerous tree pathogens, were isolated from beetles that emerged from samples, their galleries, phoretic mites on these beetles, and from wounds and wound-associated mites. Fungal isolates were identified using multiple DNA markers. Twenty sub-cortical beetle, 22 mite and 16 ophiostomatoid fungal species were recovered from only a few native and exotic host tree species. Three fungal species are likely undescribed despite increased focus on this ecologically and economically important group worldwide. Significantly, some mites and fungi were isolated from native and non-native hosts. Wound-associated fungi and mites were less host-specific than sub-cortical beetle-associated taxa. We highlight the rich and still unexplored symbioses between sub-cortical beetles, mites, and ophiostomatoid fungi in Afromontane forests and provide a foundation for future studies on the ecology of these important organisms.

A rare sighting of two male carrion specialist dung beetles, Scarabaeolus carniphilus Deschodt &amp; Davis, 2015, burying a freshly dead Herald snake (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia (Laurenti, 1768)) is documented from its discovery in the field and subsequent reburial under laboratory conditions. The species studied is a member of the telecoprid (dung roller) Scarabaeini, but behaved here like a paracoprid; it deliberately cut into and removed flesh from the dead snake; these pieces were then taken into a feeding burrow; later a pheromone release stance was taken up near an established burrow; and under laboratory conditions the snake was completely buried. These observations, mostly novel for this species and its genus are clearly documented via photographs and an online time lapse video taken every hour for 24-hours during the snake’s-(re)burial. This note introduces relevant aspects of dung beetle natural history and new biological information for Scarabaeolus and particularly for Sc. carniphilus. It records and interprets a carrion specialist Scarabaeini dung beetle burying and feeding on fresh carrion; highlights natural history findings (pheromone release) previously not considered for the evolution of the Scarabaeini; and aims to stimulate behavioural research into this interesting and under studied genus Scarabaeolus.
