Advances in Life Course Research publishes articles dealing with various aspects of the human life course. Seeing life course research as an essentially interdisciplinary field of study, it invites and welcomes contributions from anthropology, biosocial science, demography, epidemiology and statistics, gerontology, economics, management and organisation science, policy studies, psychology, research methodology and sociology. Original empirical analyses, theoretical contributions, methodological studies and reviews accessible to a broad set of readers are welcome.

Advances in Life Course Research

For decades, researchers have employed the Cross-Lagged Panel Model (CLPM) to analyze the interactions and interdependencies of a wide variety of inner- or supra-individual variables across the life course. However, in the last years the CLPM has been criticized for its underlying assumptions and several alternative models have been proposed that allow to relax these assumptions. With the Random-Intercept CLPM, the Autoregressive Latent Trajectory Model with Structured Residuals, and the Dual Change Score Model, we describe three of the most prominent alternatives to the CLPM and provide an impression about how to interpret the results obtained with these models. To this end, we illustrate the use of the presented models with an empirical example on the interplay between self-esteem and relationship satisfaction. We provide R and Mplus scripts that might help life course researchers to use these novel and powerful alternatives to the CLPM in their own research.

Transition to adulthood in low- and middle-come countries (LMIC) has increasingly been diversified and individualized. Economic development and migration are often cited as reasons for diversification but have been analytically examined interactively. To examine the complex linkages between development, migration, and transition to adulthood, we use China data to cover a decade when it has experienced rapid economic development, a large flow of rural-to-urban migration, and changes in the transition to adulthood. Applying the latent class analysis and multinomial logistic regression on the Chinese General Social Survey 2008 and 2017, we obtain three main findings. First, economic development increases the diversification of the transition to adulthood. Second, rural-to-urban migration has a greater impact on the postponement than on other pathways. Third, the joint impact of economic development and migration is not evident: the change do not differ between men and women as well as young adults of different migration experience. These findings collectively imply signs of the diversification of transition to adulthood in China, but also entail the individualization behind it.

Young adults living in Lebanon are experiencing the impacts of compounded crises during a critical juncture in the life course. Transitions into young adulthood are complex, unfolding in diverse ways for each individual. Using the concept of vital conjunctures, and a qualitative longitudinal research approach, this article explores how intersecting economic, political and refugee crises in Lebanon are impacting transitions to young adulthood. It explores three key dimensions of early adulthood transitions: education, income-generation and relationship formation. The data is based on four rounds of in-depth interviews with 18 young Lebanese, Palestinian and Syrian adults, and their caregivers, conducted over a three-year period. The research brings an intersectional perspective by analysing how multiple forms of inequality - including poverty, refugee status and gender discrimination - shape young adults' experiences of crises. The results show how the economic and social deprivations brought about by the compounded crises in Lebanon have influenced young people's trajectories in varying but interconnected ways, influencing the complexity and timing of key dimensions of early adulthood. For young women and refugees, restrictive gender norms and legal barriers, respectively, add another layer of complexity, and make it more challenging for young people to reach their goals and aspirations. The findings also point to the severe psychosocial impacts of these disrupted transitions, due to increasing household responsibilities, disrupted social support networks, and an inability to achieve desired aspirations. This research contributes to addressing the limited understanding of young adult transitions in crises contexts, highlighting the severe impacts of interconnected crises on young adults' trajectories.

Turbulent trajectories: experiences of young adults from refugee and host communities in Lebanon during crises

Social isolation - the lack of social contacts in number and frequency - has been shown to have a negative impact on health and well-being. Using group-based trajectory analysis of longitudinal data from a New Zealand birth cohort, we created a typology of social isolation based on onset during the life course and persistence into adulthood. We then characterized each type according to risk factors related to family environment and child behavior that have been shown previously to be associated with social isolation. Based on fit statistics and distinctness of trajectories we considered the four-class model to be the most appropriate: (1) 'never isolated' (71.6 % of the cohort), (2) 'adult only' (10.1 %), (3) 'child only' (14.3 %), and (4) 'persistent isolation' (4.0 %). Family-environmental factors - i.e. having a teen-aged mother, having a single parent, frequent changes in residence, or maltreatment - tended to be associated with both child and adult onset and persistence of social isolation, whereas child-behavioral factors - i.e. self-control or internalizing symptoms - applied more to the child onset of social isolation. Sensitivity analyses using empirically defined groups - based on 15 % 'cut-offs' for isolation in childhood and adulthood - produced similar life-course groupings and similar associations. Our findings provide insights into the development of social isolation and demonstrate the changeability of social isolation across almost four decades of the life span. They also suggest family-based and child-based interventions could address child onset and the persistence of social isolation into adulthood.
