To assess the association between transgender or gender-questioning identity and screen use (recreational screen time and problematic screen use) in a demographically diverse national sample of early adolescents in the U.S. We analyzed cross-sectional data from Year 3 of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive DevelopmentSM Study (ABCD Study®, N=9,859, 2019-2021, mostly 12-13-years-old). Multiple linear regression analyses estimated the associations between transgender or questioning gender identity and screen time, as well as problematic use of video games, social media, and mobile phones, adjusting for confounders. In a sample of 9,859 adolescents (48.8% female, 47.6% racial/ethnic minority, 1.0% transgender, 1.1% gender-questioning), transgender participants reported 4.51 (95% CI 1.17-7.85) more hours of total daily recreational screen time including more time on television/movies, video games, texting, social media, and the internet, compared to cisgender participants. Gender-questioning participants reported 3.41 (95% CI 1.16-5.67) more hours of total daily recreational screen time compared to cisgender participants. Transgender identification and questioning one's gender identity was associated with higher problematic social media, video game, and mobile phone use, compared to cisgender identification. Transgender and gender-questioning adolescents spend a disproportionate amount of time engaging in screen-based activities and have more problematic use across social media, video game, and mobile phone platforms.

Screen use in transgender and gender-questioning adolescents: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study

We aimed to explore the association of chronic constipation and diarrhea with major chronic diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and diabetes, as well as with mortality risk. In addition, we characterized the interrelationship of inflammation with abnormal bowel health, major chronic diseases, and mortality.Demographic characteristics, physical and laboratory examinations were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database 2005-2010. Chronic constipation or diarrhea was diagnosed by the shape and frequency of defecation. The number of samples used for the cancer, CVD, diabetes, and mortality analyses were 11,217, 11,168, 11,555, and 14,316, respectively. Logistic regression was used to analyze the association among abnormal bowel health, major chronic diseases, dietary inflammatory index (DII), and C-reactive protein (CRP). A Cox proportional hazard regression was performed to assess risk of all-cause mortality, and the Fine and Gray models were subsequently employed to calculate the cancer and CVD mortality risks.There were statistically positive associations of chronic diarrhea or constipation with breast and colon cancer, CVD, risks of all-cause mortality, and CVD mortality. Particularly in participants younger than 60, in addition to the positive correlations of chronic diarrhea with three major chronic diseases and all-cause mortality risk, chronic constipation also contributed to an elevated risk of CVD mortality. With respect to inflammation markers, an increased DII or CRP level was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of abnormal bowel health and major chronic diseases, and a higher mortality risk.Participants with abnormal bowel health were more likely linked to breast cancer, colon cancer, CVD, and risks of all-cause and CVD mortality. Moreover, inflammation may have a potential role in associations among abnormal bowel health, major chronic diseases and mortality. However, these findings need to be confirmed by further prospective studies.

Association of abnormal bowel health with major chronic diseases and risk of mortality

To test the hypothesis that diabetes-related factors (metabolic syndrome [MetS], glucose, insulin, and leptin) are inversely associated with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) risk.We followed 13,736 participants, aged 45-64 years, without prior AAA surgery at baseline (1987-1989), for AAA occurrence through 2011. Hazard ratios (HRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of AAA were calculated using Cox regression.During 275,054 person-years of follow-up, we identified 518 AAA events. Fasting serum glucose was associated inversely with AAA risk (HR [95% CI] per one unit increment in log2(glucose), 0.54 [0.36-0.80]), but fasting insulin was not associated with AAA. Plasma leptin was also associated inversely with AAA occurrence (HR [95% CI] per one unit increment in log2(leptin), 0.83 [0.71-0.98]). Compared with individuals without MetS, those with MetS had increased risk of AAA (HR [95% CI], 1.24 [1.04-1.48]). Among individuals with or without diabetes, the HRs increased monotonically with a greater number of non-glucose MetS components.Diabetes, fasting glucose, and plasma leptin were inversely associated with risk of AAA. In contrast, the MetS was associated with increased risk of AAA, due to the influence of the non-glucose MetS components.
