Research on Social Work Practice, sponsored by the Society for Social Work and Research, is a disciplinary journal devoted to the publication of empirical research concerning the methods and outcomes of social work practice. Social work practice is broadly interpreted to refer to the application of intentionally designed social work intervention programs to problems of societal and/or interpersonal importance, including behavior analysis or psychotherapy involving individuals; case management; practice involving couples, families, and small groups; community practice education; and the development, implementation, and evaluation of social policies.

Research on Social Work Practice

In the past decade, the Israeli Ministry of Social Affairs has been engaged in an ongoing effort to change the capacity of social service organizations and social workers across the country to use and create knowledge in order to achieve the best outcomes for the people they serve. Although there is an ever-growing mandate in Israel to demonstrate outcomes and use effective strategies, social workers have historically experienced unique challenges in accessing and assessing available evidence-based practice when they are available. The first step to addressing these challenges, the intra-organizational phase, was to design, implement, and test a model of organizational learning designed to teach social workers how to use learning to change practice. The second step, the inter-organizational phase, was the introduction of virtual communities of practice as a tool to support workers in the acquisition and dissemination of new knowledge. This paper presents a case study of this effort including a description of the development and implementation of the two phases and an agenda for future research.

Learning Teams and Virtual Communities of Practice: Managing Evidence and Expertise Beyond the Stable State

The claim that professional social work should be based on scientific knowledge is many decades old with knowledge transfer usually moving in the direction from science to practice. The authors critique this model of knowledge transfer and support a hybrid one that places more of an emphasis on professional knowledge and action occurring in the real world. The authors particularly focus on the organizational contexts in which social work practice occurs in presenting a model of cooperative knowledge formation.

New Proposals for Generating and Exploiting Solution-Oriented Knowledge

Social work students placed on a multidisciplinary team will be exposed to diverse ways of interpreting a case, which is an invaluable experience. Placement in a multidisciplinary setting can be an excellent way to engage students in teamwork. Supervisors need to adequately address various aspects in working on a team with students. A survey of 44 bachelor of social work students placed in an internship designed to help them learn about community organizing, program development, or fund-raising revealed that 41 students wanted to better understand the roles of different disciplines in service provision. Although 33 students reported participating in multidisciplinary team meetings and 23 reported discussing working on a team in supervision, less than half (21) reported that they discussed how different disciplines work together to assist clients. This article will discuss the importance of learning to work with other disciplines during training to prepare students for future work in social services.

Supervision of Social Work Interns as Members of a Multidisciplinary Team

Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of a brief 10-day online self-compassion intervention, lasting around 25 min per day, in reducing complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) symptoms among university students with trauma history. Method: We adopted a 2 (intervention group vs. control group) × 3 (pre-test vs. post-test vs. one-month follow-up) randomized controlled trial (RCT) design. Results: Seventy-seven participants completed the study; repeated measures analysis of variance revealed a reduction in total CPTSD scores post-intervention. There was medium effect size of the intervention on disturbances in self-organization symptoms. Network analysis of CPTSD symptom changes and intervention conditions showed that changes in avoidance of external trauma cues, worthlessness, emotion dysregulation, feelings of isolation, and nightmare symptoms were directly associated with the intervention condition. Conclusions: The pilot RCT suggests the feasibility and potential effectiveness of the online self-compassion intervention for CPTSD symptoms among university students.

Book Review: A Human Rights-Based Approach to Justice in Social Work Practice by Shirley Gatenio

Purpose: This article is a process evaluation of a previously published outcome study. It provides an exploratory analysis of victim–survivor accounts of behavior change among men participating in a combined alcohol and other drug and domestic violence intervention and women's experiences of family safety contact services. Methods: Interviews with victim–survivors ( n = 10) and program participants ( n = 9). Results: Findings illustrate three patterns: victim–survivor accounts validating, challenging, and offering more nuanced perspectives on men's reports of behavior change. Conclusions: This article argues that victim–survivor engagement in behavior change programs is critical to assess and monitor risk to victim–survivors and other family members, validate other outcome measures related to men's behavior change (or lack thereof), and provide victim–survivor access to support.
