In the presence of large sample sizes hypotheses testing procedures often lead to excessive rates of rejection. This is mainly due to the precise null hypothesis formulation usually adopted in statistical packages. We address the fundamental issues of deciding whether commonly reported outputs are misleading and, if this is the case, how to adjust them through suitable calibration procedures. Such procedures are designed to handle different levels of information available on the relevant characteristics of the various applicative contexts.

mariangela.zenga@unimib.it Abstract: In the past few decades, Coxian phase-type distributions have become increasingly more popu-lar as a means of representing survival times in healthcare models. In particular, they are considered suit-able for modelling the length of stay of patients in hospital and more recently for modelling the patient waiting times in Accident and Emergency Departments. However, problems have arisen in how to accu-rately estimate the parameters of the model from healthcare data. This paper examines the various ap-proaches and considers the recent developments in fitting the Coxian phase-type distribution.
