GFF is a journal of the Geological Society of Sweden, serving as an international scientific publication that primarily publishes papers in English. The journal covers a wide range of fields within geology and paleontology, including petrology, mineralogy, stratigraphy, systematic paleontology, paleogeography, historical geology, and Quaternary geology. Systematic descriptions of fossils, minerals, and rocks are a significant component of GFF's publication record. Papers on regional or local geology should pertain to the Baltic or Nordic geology, or related fields. Papers addressing geophysics, geochemistry, biogeochemistry, climatology, and hydrology should have a geological background. Descriptions of new methods—whether analytical, instrumental, or numerical—should be relevant to the journal's broad scope. Abstract Results from the Greenland ice cores (GISP2 and GRIP) suggest that the Earths climate has experienced periods of rapid climate change, however the link between climate change and the resulting sediment record is poorly known. Studies from a wide variety of depositional settings indicate links can be found and that short cycles (1,000–3,000 yrs) may be associated with ocean-atmospheric coupling. Environments with continuous and high sedimentation rates combined with low bio-turbation rates are optimum. As the sediment record varies with environment it is important to understand the temporal and spatial limitations of the record. Lag responses and feed back mechanisms may create weak links between cause and effect. These problems may be averted by using a global approach, such as, comparing high and low latitude data sets, as well as arid and tropical environments for equivalent time intervals. Accurate correlation techniques are critical for distinguishing local from regional signatures. The meaning of abrupt will vary with environment, but ice core records and some limited sedimentological studies suggests that decades to a few hundred years is a reasonable estimate.

Methods, potential, and limitations for tracing abrupt climate change in clastic environments

A growing literature of deep but also surficial fossilized remains of lithobiological life, often associated with igneous rocks, necessitates the unfolding of a sub-discipline within paleobiology. Here, we introduce the term paleolithobiology as the new auxiliary sub-discipline under which fossilized lithobiology should be handled. We present key criteria that distinguish the paleolithobiological archive from the traditional one and discuss sample strategies as well as scientific perspectives. A majority of paleolithobiological material consists of deep biosphere fossils, and in order to highlight the relevance of these, we present new data on fungal fossils from the Lockne impact crater. Fungal fossils in the Lockne drill cores have been described previously but here we provide new insights into the presence of reproductive structures that indicate the fungi to be indigenous. We also show that these fungi frequently dissolve and penetrate secondary calcite, delineating the role lithobionts plays in geobiological cycles. We hope that the formalization of the sub-discipline paleolithobiology will not only highlight an overlooked area of paleobiology as well as simplify future studies of endo- and epilithic fossil material, but also improve our understanding of the history of the deep biosphere.

Introducing palaeolithobiology

This special issue aims to highlight the value of historical paleontological collections at museums in general, and at Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM) in particular, providing a glimpse into our national fossil archives in the light of modern science and technology.Museums worldwide house fossil material collected over a time span of hundreds of years, in many cases from sedimentary successions that are no longer accessible.The paleontological collections at the NRM comprise over two million specimens that were contributed to the museum over the past 200 years, by pioneers, such as Nordenskiöld, Angelin, Holm, Stensiö, Nathorst, Halle and Lundblad.In more recent times, donations from other insti-tutes and private persons have enriched our collections and a new generation of scientists and curators are continuously adding valuable material.For the purpose of this special issue, we focus mainly on our Swedish collections, focusing on scientifically important specimens not described previously, but also new material investigated with the latest technologies.Research highlighted in this issue covers most of the Phanerozoic eon incorporating macro-and microfossil data from marine and continental successions.We wish to show the reader that the collections represent an invaluable national resource and a great asset for both Swedish and international researchers long into the future.

Advances in Swedish palaeontology; the importance of fossils in natural history collections - The Department of Palaeobiology at the Swedish Museum of Natural History

Here we investigate megaspores from 10 Triassic‒Jurassic localities of southern Sweden and Bornholm, Denmark, based on collections housed in the Swedish Museum of Natural History. We identify and describe 19 megaspore taxa belonging to three stratigraphically constrained assemblages, representing the Rhaetian, Hettangian and Pliensbachian, respectively. Megaspores are abundant and diverse (12 taxa) in the Rhaetian assemblage. Diversity markedly decreases across the Triassic–Jurassic boundary (TJB), with species richness reducing from 12 to two taxa. The Hettangian assemblage is well-preserved but depauperate, and is overwhelmingly dominated by Nathorstisporites hopliticus. A subsequent recovery of lycopsid diversity followed, recorded by an increase in richness to six taxa in the Pliensbachian assemblage. The disappearance of the hygrophilous and diverse heterosporous lycophyte communities across the TJB, suggests a shift to drier conditions in the earliest Jurassic. This is supported by lithological changes from coal-forming environments in the Rhaetian to sandstone-dominated fluvial-estuarine facies in the Hettangian. Throughout this study, we analysed the megaspores using fluorescence microscopy, which revealed detailed morphological features on specimens that were otherwise opaque under visible light. This non-destructive technique is particularly useful for examining opaque megaspores embedded in permanent mounting media, such as epoxy resin, and may provide new insights into historical megaspore collections elsewhere.

Megaspores from the Late Triassic‒Early Jurassic of southern Scandinavia: taxonomic and biostratigraphic implications

The first fossil otolith association from the middle Paleocene (Selandian) of Scania, southern Sweden is described. Forty-seven otoliths were retrieved from shallow wells representing 14 teleost taxa. Many specimens are small and/or eroded and, therefore, not identifiable to species level. Nevertheless, our findings indicate the potential for further fossil otolith discoveries in the region. The Scanian otolith-based fauna greatly resembles the better-known coeval association from Copenhagen, Denmark, but is relatively rich and diverse in perciform otoliths. The fauna records the first occurrence of Serranus? caribbaeus from the European Paleocene, and of Archaemacruroides ornatus from the Selandian of the North Sea Basin.

Fish otoliths from the middle Paleocene (Selandian) of southern Sweden

Based on a new deep drilling on southern Gotland (Sweden), this study is the first to document the carbon isotope chemostratigraphy of the Upper Ordovician through lowermost Silurian sedimentary record from the central parts of the Baltic Sea subsurface. The lithological record of the Stora Sutarve core has similarities with adjacent successions in both the Viki core in the East Baltic area and the Borenshult core in the Swedish mainland. The core includes the Kahula (including 13 bentonites in the "Kinnekulle K-bentonite complex"), Hirmuse(?), Rägavere, Paekna, Jonstorp, Loka, Motala and Kallholn formations. Several of the internationally recognized upper Ordovician δ13C excursions have been identified in the core, including the Guttenberg Isotope Carbon Excursion (GICE), Moe excursion, Hirnantian Isotope Carbon Excursion (HICE), and an undefined early Silurian carbon isotope excursion, presumably the Early Aeronian Carbon Isotope Excursion (EACIE). We particularly address the microstratigraphy of the Hirnantian Stage and the finer details of the HICE, which is not fully complete and entirely confined to the 2.09-m-thick Loka Formation. This formation yields abundant, but low-richness brachiopod faunas characteristic of the Hirnantian Stage and is, based on erosional-depositional surfaces and facies, interpreted as reflecting interglacial warming and eustatic transgression related to ice-sheet contraction in Gondwana. Based on very dense carbon isotope sampling we identify four clusters of δ13C values that aid to define significant changes in the preserved record of the HICE and which may facilitate global correlation of the succession and the herein interpreted sea-level record.

The depression of the ancient Lumparn meteorite impact structure is partly infilled by Cambrian and Ordovician sediments, lying nowadays below the seawater. The Ordovician carbonate succession at this site, recognised through erratic boulders and by the drilling project in the late 1950s, is of particular interest due to its isolated and distant location from other areas with Ordovician sediments in the Baltoscandian Palaeobasin. In this study, we present new data on ostracod biostratigraphy and stable carbon isotope chemostratigraphy obtained from three old drillcores. Comparison of ostracod distribution with sections in Estonia generally supports the previous interpretations of a Darriwilian and Sandbian age for the lowermost Tranvik Limestone (which we propose renaming the "orthoceratite limestone" in the Åland Islands area). The uppermost Östersjö Limestone spans almost the entire Katian age. We also observe the global MDICE and GICE carbon isotopic excursions, as well as Katian Rakvere and Saunja excursions, within the Lumparn succession. The Ordovician succession in Lumparn Bay is facially resembling the Estonian Shelf facies of the Baltoscandian Palaeobasin.

Stratigraphic age of the Ordovician sedimentary succession in Lumparn Bay, Åland Islands, Finland

A thin (20–80 cm), patchy layer of silt-rich sediment occurs at the surface throughout Svartedalen, a nature reserve 30 km north of Gothenburg, Sweden. This surface silt mantles a bedrock-dominated, fracture-valley landscape. Using data from grain-size analysis, OSL dating and detrital-zircon U-Pb dating, we argue that the silt is loess sourced from glacial sediment that was eroded from local bedrock. The sediment has a grain-size distribution typical of wind-blown silt and is especially similar to thin deposits of loess overlying coarser material. OSL ages on five samples range from 1 to 8 ka, although analysis of equivalent dose distributions of one may suggest an age as old as 11 ka. The dates may represent true depositional ages and represent several Holocene eolian events. However, we consider as more likely that the loess was deposited during deglaciation, and quartz-grain signals have been partially reset during bioturbation. U-Pb ages on 273 zircon grains from the loess show prominent peaks at 1.6 and 1.8 Ga, as well as smaller numbers of grains from 1.0 to 1.6 Ga. These ages match dates from the Idefjord Terrane which comprises the bedrock of the study area. We argue that during ice-margin retreat, debris in the glacier was dominated by locally derived debris. This glacial sediment was left in thin patches uplands and particularly in large ice-marginal deltas. These deposits served as the proximal source for the loess. The presence of thin loess in Svartedalen suggests loess to be common in soils of southwest Sweden.

We document diverse and well-preserved dinoflagellate cyst assemblages from Cretaceous successions in the Kullemölla 1 drill core (640.0 m–590.0 m), Vomb Trough, southern Sweden. Palynology reveals a nearshore marine environment. Dinoflagellate index taxa indicate an Albian to Coniacian age, thus spanning the Early–Late Cretaceous boundary. The lower part of the core is Albian, based on the presence of the index dinocyst taxa Pareodinia and Callaiosphaeridium asymmetricum. The First Appearance Datum (FAD) of Oligosphaeridium prolixispinosum, together with the presence of Achomosphaera ramulifera, Heterosphaeridium difficile and Oligosphaeridium pulcherrimum, reveals a Cenomanian age for the interval 635– m–617 m. The Turonian interval is characterized by an increase in the dinocysts Chatangiella spectabilis and Florentinia spp., in combination with the FAD of Senoniasphaera rotundata, whereas the youngest samples are dated to the Coniacian as defined by the appearance of Glaphyrocysta sp.
