Although South Africa is among the countries with lower under-five mortality rates in sub-Saharan Africa, the country has failed to meet the national targets set to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The study aimed to examine multilevel determinants of deaths of children under five in South Africa. Secondary data from the 2016 South Africa Demographic Health Survey was used to conduct bivariate and multilevel logistic regression analyses. The under-five mortality rate was estimated at 42.1 deaths per 1000 live births. The under-five mortality rates were highest in Mpumalanga and lowest in Western Cape. The findings showed that several factors were associated with under-five deaths, namely the sex of the child, population group, mother’s level of education, household wealth, type of toilet facility, source of drinking water, and province. The findings call for targeted interventions aimed at reducing under-five deaths among vulnerable groups, i.e., those from a low socioeconomic background, from the black population group, as well as male children.

Multilevel modelling of the determinants of under-five deaths in South Africa: Evidence from the 2016 Demographic Health Survey

This was an original article, and mainly evaluated the impacts of Buzhong Yiqi decoction and biofeedback electrical stimulation on pelvic floor muscle strength and the quality of life in patients with postpartum stress urinary incontinence (PSUI). PSUI patients (total = 256) were randomly selected into a control group and study group. The control group adopted pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation training only while the study group added Buzhong Yiqi decoction and biofeedback electrical stimulation. The degree of urinary incontinence, pelvic floor muscle strength, pelvic floor muscle tension, urodynamics, therapeutic effectiveness, quality of life along with incidence of adverse reactions in the two 2 groups were compared. The results showed that after therapy, in contrast to the control group, the study group presented improved degree of urinary incontinence, higher muscle strength of class I along with class II muscle fibers, better pelvic floor muscle tension, better urodynamics indicators, better treatment efficiency, and higher quality of life. We concluded that Buzhong Yiqi decoction combined with biofeedback electrical stimulation can improve urinary incontinence, promote the pelvic floor muscle strength along with promote the quality of life in PSUI patients.

Despite the prominence of international discourses on sexual and reproductive health and rights, much remains to be done to meet both needs and wants of individuals, couples and families. Socioeconomic disparities and geographic differentials, compounded by inappropriate policies besides resource constraints, hbave hampered the achievements of these rights to the extent that, in many jurisdictions, access to quality sexual and reproductive health services continues to be a privilege for some as opposed to a right for all. A rights-based approach, accompanied by appropriate policy formulation and sustained advocacy for resource mobilisation, can promote equity through community acceptance and individual behaviour change.

Cervical cancer (CC) is a malignant tumor in females characterized by high incidence and mortality rates, often resulting in a poor prognosis for patients. Zoledronic acid (ZA), a third-generation bisphosphonate, exhibits anti-tumor properties across various types of tumors. To further understand the effect of ZA in the treatment of CC, this article included two kinds of human CC cells (CCCs) as the research object, examining the impact of varying levels of ZA on the cells’ biological properties. Hela and Siha were cultivated and exposed to ZA at 0, 50, 100, and 200 μM, and the changes of cell proliferation, clone formation, migration, and invasion characteristics were detected. Cell RNA was extracted to detect epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the relative expression (RE) of AKT/GSK3β/β-catenin (β-cat) pathway related proteins. The results show that as against 0 μM, the proliferation rate, clone formation cell number, migration distance, and invasive cell number of Hela and Siha were markedly reduced, while E-cadherin (E-cad) was markedly enhanced. N-cadherin (N-cad), vimentin (Vim), p-AKT, p-GSK3β, and β-cat were markedly decreased at 50, 100, and 200 μM ZA; With the increase of ZA concentration, the biological characteristics and protein expression levels of Hela and Siha changed more markedly, showing concentration dependent characteristics (P &lt; 0.05). It was concluded that ZA can influence the malignant biological activities of CCCs.

Effect of zoledronic acid on biological characteristics of cervical cancer cells

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of coronavirus disease perception on somatic sensations and cognitive emotion regulation in pregnant women. The study is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 144 pregnant women. In the study, the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Scale (CERS) short form, Coronavirus disease perception scale (CVDPS), Coronavirus anxiety scale (CVAS), and Exaggeration of Somatic Sensations Scale (ESSS) were used. In CERS, high scores of “Catastrophizing", "Blaming Others” sub-dimension are the significant variables that predict the scores of Coronavirus Anxiety Scale. Significant variables that predict scores of ESSS within the order of their importance are having high scores for “Rumination”, low scores for the presence of smoking and “Positive R-Refocusing” that are the sub-dimensions of CERS. Pregnant women use cognitive distortions such as catastrophizing and blaming others to generate coronavirus anxiety, predictors of exaggerating bodily sensations are increased ruminations and decreased positive refocusing.
