Purpose:The purpose of this work was to determine the comfort performance of a toric, monthly, silicon hydrogel CL (lehfilcon A; TOTAL30 for Astigmatism) over a long day of wear.Methods: This was a 1-month, 3-visit, prospective, single-arm study.Adult, 18-to 45-year-old CL wearers with good vision who were minimally symptomatic (CLDEQ-8 scores ≤12) were enrolled.Subjects were required to have astigmatism ranging from -0.75 D to -2.50 D in each eye and were required to wear the study CLs from about 8:00 AM until 12:00 AM each day.Comfort data with the study CL throughout the wear day were collected via text messaging.Results: A total of 47 subjects who had a mean ± SD age of 29.5 ± 7.0 years were analyzed.Within a specified time point across the month of wear, CL comfort did not vary (all p-value ≥ 0.82), yet CL comfort did decrease across the wear day for all days evaluated (all p-value <0.001).Most subjects found their CLs to be comfortable with only 1.8% of subjects reporting an uncomfortable score at CL application and only 8.5% of subjects reporting an uncomfortable score after 16 hours of CL wear. Conclusion:A high level of consistency and predictability in comfort was found within the first month of wearing lehfilcon A CLs.This suggests that patients with minimal CL-related discomfort at initial fitting of a lehfilcon A CL may likely tolerate longer wear time with minimal discomfort across the entire month of wear.Clinical Trials.gov

Knowledge, Attitude, and Perception of African Optometrists on Fellowship of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO): A Cross-Sectional Survey

Myopia is an important cause of correctable visual impairment and preventable blindness worldwide. Prevalence rates are approximately 20%-35% among the older teenage population globally. It has a medical burden of pathologic complications such as maculopathy and glaucomatous optic neuropathy. High school students experience high-performance and study pressures in the preparation for the final national examination. As a result they are exposed to excessive near work and indoor activities. They are also ignored for regular screening.To determine the prevalence and associated factors of myopia among high school students in Gondar town, Ethiopia.An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 498 high school students with systematic random sampling method from April 18 to April 29, 2016, in three full-cycle high schools (9th-12th grades). A standardized structured questionnaire, Snellen acuity chart, pinhole, retinoscope, trial case lenses, pen torch, and direct ophthalmoscope were used to collect data.A total of 495 study participants were included, and they had a mean age of 17.48±1.59 years. The prevalence of myopia was 11.9% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 10.2, 17.9). Family history of myopia (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=8.08 [95% CI: 4.30, 15.16]), school being private (AOR=2.88 [95% CI: 1.02, 8.11]), longer time spent for near work (AOR=2.89 [95% CI: 1.12, 7.43]), longer time spent partaking in indoor activities (AOR=4.32 [95% CI: 1.69, 10.99]), shorter near working distance (AOR=3.06 [95% CI: 1.33, 7.06]), lack of outdoor sport activities (AOR=2.27 [95% CI: 1.05, 4.90]), use of visual display units (AOR=2.81 [95% CI: 1.30, 6.10]), and abnormal ocular findings (AOR=6.69 [CI: 3.43, 13.03]) were found to be independently associated with myopia.The prevalence of myopia was 11.9%. Family history for myopia, school being private, longer time spent partaking in indoor activities, shorter working distance, lack of outdoor sport activities, use of visual display units, and presence of abnormal ocular findings were positively associated with myopia.

Abstract: Compliance with contact lens care is important for successful contact lens wear and for minimizing the risk of complications related to lens wear. There are many components of overall lens care guidelines that may potentially be disregarded, forgotten, or misunderstood. Literature has reported copious data on rates of poor compliance for separate lens care recommendations. Knowing the areas of contact lens care where lens wearers perform poorly is helpful when creating strategies for improving patient education. As science evolves and new best-practices are determined, eye care providers must be engaged in educating new lens wearers and reeducating existing wearers. It is vital to make wearers mindful of proper lens care and why proper lens care should be important to them. Various educational strategies can help practitioners to communicate with their patients more effectively. The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss studies of noncompliance with contact lens wear; consequences of these noncompliant behaviors; and studies of lens care education which were found with a literature search. The resulting discussion also includes strategies to improve compliance with patient contact lens wear. Keywords: contact lenses, compliance, education, lens care
