Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing nursing students’ caring efficiency.Methods: This study included 212 nursing students from three University nursing departments in Busan metropolitan city. Data were collected from September 1 to September 29, 2021, using self-report questionnaires. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted with SPSS version 24.0.Results: Positive psychological capital and interpersonal competence on the relationship and character of nursing students were positively correlated with caring efficiency. The variables affecting the caring efficiency of the subjects were character (β=.60, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;&lt;.001), amount of participation in a character development program (5 times or more) (β=.16, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;=.023), levels of stress (moderate β=.13, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;=.037; low β=.15, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;=.015), motivation to apply to a nursing program (β=.12, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;=.024), and volunteer experience (β=.11, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;=.038). The total explanatory power of the variables was 50.0% (F=14.69, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;&lt;.001).Conclusion: Character was one of the biggest influential factors on caring efficiency. In order to improve nursing students' caring efficiency, above all, it is necessary to make efforts to raise the level of individual character.

Influences of positive psychological capital, interpersonal competence, and character on caring efficiency in nursing students

Purpose: This study aimed to provide a descriptive review of health literacy competency questionnaires and to identify their attributes for developing a health literacy competency measurement tool to be used by Korean health professionals.Methods: A literature review was conducted through a search in international and Korean databases (PubMed, CINAHL, RISS, and KISS) for articles published between 2010 and 2024. A total of 2,200 articles were explored, out of which 6 studies met the inclusion criteria.Results: In Canada, an initial set of health literacy competency questionnaires was developed; subsequently, two questionnaires were developed in China and Brazil. Another study was translated using the initial Canadian study questionnaires, and two studies were modified. All six studies meeting the inclusion criteria employed a Delphi process involving 20~41 expert panels. Among the six studies, only one reported the psychometric properties of the questionnaires used. The reviewed questionnaires comprised knowledge, attitude, skills, and practice domains based on Bloom’s taxonomy. Knowledge and skills were commonly included factors in the questionnaires.Conclusion: There were 17 knowledge, 10 attitude, 13 skills, and 13 practice attributes for each area of the reviewed questionnaires. “Easy-to-read materials,” “plain language,” and “teach-back” were identified as appropriate attributes for measuring health literacy competencies. Among the questionnaires, there were many items and many overlapping items between the domains. Further studies are required to refine their essential attributes and to verify the instruments’ psychometric properties in order to increase their feasibility.

A literature review of health literacy competency for health professionals

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to validate the effectiveness of a video education program delivered via smartphone for patients undergoing echocardiography.Methods: A pre-post quasi-experimental design was used. The video education program was developed through a process of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation according to the ADDIE instructional design model. A total of 34 adult outpatients aged 19 years or older were recruited for the study. They were randomly assigned into an experimental group (n=17) and a control group (n=17). Pre- and post-anxiety, knowledge level, and education satisfaction after the intervention were measured. The data were analyzed by an &lt;i&gt;χ&lt;/i&gt;²-test, Mann–Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test using IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0.Results: No difference were found in the state anxiety level between the two groups before and after the video education program intervention. However, the experimental group showed a significant higher knowledge level compared to the control group (Z=-3.07, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;=.002) after the intervention. The education satisfaction level of the experimental group was also significantly higher (Z=-3.62, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;&lt;.001).Conclusion: Based on these results, it can be concluded that the echocardiography video education program developed based on the ADDIE model provides efficient information to echocardiography patients and increases their education satisfaction. It is an effective nursing intervention that enables an indirect experience of the special examination that patients will experience by providing information reflecting environmental characteristics and the opinions of patients and can be used in clinical practice as an efficient education method employing self-learning.

The development and effectiveness of a video education program for echocardiography outpatients

Purpose: This study aims to explore the trend of nursing education and major research themes in the Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education (JKASNE) over 30 years.Methods: A total of 1,026 articles, published in the JKASNE from 1995 to 2023, were analyzed using the Microsoft Excel program for descriptive statistics and NetMiner for a word cloud of Korean keywords.Results: Most research subjects were healthy people (n=841). Education-related research topics (n=619) were categorized into nine domains: educational methods, educational curriculum, study type and methods, knowledge level and contents, psychosocial variables related to knowledge and education, attitude, behavior, development and evaluation of educational programs, and effects of educational programs. Quantitative (n=835) and descriptive studies (n=497) were determined to be the most common research designs. Self-reported questionnaires were the most common method used in surveys (n=581) and experimental studies (n=153). Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and other statistical techniques were used. The keywords in the JKASNE reflected various aspects of nursing research. General terms related to nursing education, such as "nursing students," "nurses," and "nursing education," appeared with high frequency, while more specific terms and phrases reflecting educational competencies and characteristics, such as "self-efficacy," "clinical performance ability," and "communication knowledge," were also prominently featured.Conclusion: The JKASNE has published mainly education-focused papers. Analyzing the full set of papers published in JKASNE and examining their characteristics is very meaningful and helpful for the future development of Korean nursing education.

Analysis of papers published in The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education over 30 Years

Purpose: This study aimed to explore research trends in nursing organizational culture or climate in South Korea using topic modeling.Methods: A total of 206 journal articles published in South Korea from 2010 to 2023 were identified as relevant. Semantic morphemes of the English abstracts were refined, and a co-occurrence matrix with 145 keywords was generated. Using the NetMiner program, the characteristics of text networks, degree centrality, semantic structure, and latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic modeling were analyzed.Results: The top 30 keywords with the highest degree centrality, considered critical core keywords, included “patient safety culture,” “organizational commitment,” “innovation culture,” “relational culture,” “job satisfaction,” “infection control,” “workplace bullying,” and “turnover intention” alongside “RNs,” “organizational culture,” and “hospital.” The critical core keywords varied over different time periods. Four main topics were identified: (a) organizational culture and registered nurse (RN) job satisfaction, (b) workplace bullying and organizational culture, (c) organizational culture for infection control and patient safety, and (d) organizational culture for person-centered care and teamwork.Conclusion: Nursing organizational culture was approached as either a generic culture or a focused culture related to specific performance or outcomes, mainly patient safety, person-centered care, or teamwork. The disadvantages of a hierarchy-oriented culture were evident, indicating a need for nurse leaders to initiate changes. Future research should expand to include long-term care facilities, intervention studies aimed at changing organizational culture, studies utilizing qualitative methods or longitudinal approaches, and the development of measures for nursing organizational culture.

Exploring research trends in nursing organizational culture using topic modeling

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of knowledge and self-efficacy in pressure injury care on its performance among home visit nursing workers in the long-term care insurance system.Methods: This study used a descriptive correlational design and was conducted from March 30 to July 15, 2024. Data were collected through an online survey platform (Google Forms) using self-reported questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis with IBM SPSS 27.0.Results: A total of 142 home visit nursing workers employed in the long-term care insurance system participated in the survey. Self-efficacy in pressure injury care was found to be positively and significantly correlated with knowledge of pressure injury care (r=.27, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;=.001), and the performance of pressure injury care showed a statistically significant positive correlations with self-efficacy in pressure injury care (r=.33, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;&lt;.001). A multiple regression analysis revealed that the factors significantly related to the performance of pressure injury care included previous clinical setting (β=.33, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;&lt;.001), and self-efficacy in pressure injury care (β=.27, &lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt;=.004).Conclusion: This study suggests that developing an intervention program to enhance self-efficacy in pressure injury care is necessary to improve the performance of pressure injury care provided by home visit nursing workers in the long-term care insurance system.
