Beyond basic Internet/Intranet access services, satellite broadband technologies are currently being deployed in new vertical markets such as wide-area governmental/defense networks, mission-critical networks for public services (public safety, e-health, e-education), and cellular backhauling. All these markets share a common and simple need, i.e. instant access to high data rate (up to several Mbit/s) connections, with a high degree of mobility and quality of service, in remote areas where the terrestrial infrastructure is not present or not sufficiently reliable. Historically, satellite solutions have perfectly matched such needs in the narrowband domain (with the Inmarsat service, for example). Alcatel's goal is to extend the relevance of satellite solutions to the broadband domain. Alcatel has developed a range of solutions based on the Alcatel 9780 DVB-RCS product specifically to address these vertical markets. Its offer includes satellite gateways and terminals, hardware to provide security or to interface with external networking equipment, and also software applications to handle added-value services such as collaborative work, video conferencing, or video streaming services.

GMES -- Global Monitoring for Environment and Security -- is a European initiative to give decision makers the information needed to anticipate or manage crisis situations related to the environment and security. It brings together data and information providers as well as users to provide the most cost-effective, user-friendly and sustainable services. GMES requires all kinds of Earth observation satellites (Sentinels), but it will also use telecommunication and navigation satellites for robust communications and localization. This article describes GMES and the contribution of Alcatel Alenia Space to this European challenge.

In the early 21st century, the Earth's inhabitants have at their disposal a multitude of ground and space technologies enabling them to communicate, identify their position, and observe the Earth and its natural phenomena. Digital and miniaturization technologies are making these facilities more widely available. Europe is very active in this sphere, undertaking the Galileo satellite navigation program, the only space application for which it was dependent on other countries. Meteorological satellites will soon be joined by operational oceanographic applications. The French Aeronautics and Space Academy (ANAE) invited a team of specialists to study the strategic, technical and economic aspects of space applications at the service of society. This article gives the results of this study, and forms part of a comprehensive analysis of the different aspects of space activities.

Satellite-based location will shape our future, creating new applications. Besides emergency call location, and navigation in cars and on mobile phones, a range of new services will appear in our life: personal assistance and medical care, localized presence services, finding friends, gaming, localized blogs, home zone billing, and so on. To enable the wide commercial success of each service, several key technological challenges need to be met: accuracy; ubiquity of service, including in dense urban areas and inside buildings; delivery of information instantaneously; and low consumption figures. These challenges are targeted by Alcatel in its technological roadmap, which uses its wide expertise to combine satellite positioning with mobile networks, WiFi, WiMAX, and dedicated sensors in handsets. Hybridization of several technologies is the key to meeting these market success factors. As an example, combining satellite positioning with mobile network positioning is the most efficient way to locate persons calling an emergency number (112 in Europe), indoors as well as outdoors.
