When modeling turbulent flows, it is often the case that information on the forcing terms or the boundary conditions is either not available or overly complicated and expensive to implement. Instead, some flow features, such as the mean velocity profile or its statistical moments, may be accessible through experiments or observations. We present a method based on physics-informed neural networks to assimilate a given set of conditions into turbulent states. The physics-informed method helps the final state approximate a valid flow. We show examples of different statistical conditions that can be used to prepare states, motivated by experimental and atmospheric problems. Lastly, we show two ways of scaling the resolution of the prepared states. One is through the use of multiple and parallel neural networks. The other uses nudging, a synchronization-based data assimilation technique that leverages the power of specialized numerical solvers.

Assimilation of statistical data into turbulent flows using physics-informed neural networks.

In the presence of an obstacle, active particles condensate into a surface "wetting" layer due to persistent motion. If the obstacle is asymmetric, a rectification current arises in addition to wetting. Asymmetric geometries are therefore commonly used to concentrate microorganisms like bacteria and sperms. However, most studies neglect the fact that biological active matter is diverse, composed of individuals with distinct self-propulsions. Using simulations, we study a mixture of "fast" and "slow" active Brownian disks in two dimensions interacting with large half-disk obstacles. With this prototypical obstacle geometry, we analyze how the stationary collective behavior depends on the degree of self-propulsion "diversity," defined as proportional to the difference between the self-propulsion speeds, while keeping the average self-propulsion speed fixed. A wetting layer rich in fast particles arises. The rectification current is amplified by speed diversity due to a superlinear dependence of rectification on self-propulsion speed, which arises from cooperative effects. Thus, the total rectification current cannot be obtained from an effective one-component active fluid with the same average self-propulsion speed, highlighting the importance of considering diversity in active matter.

Liquid salty micro-channels (brine) between growing ice platelets in sea ice are an important habitat for $CO_2$ - binding microalgaea with great impact on polar ecosystems. The structure formation of ice platelets is microscopically described and a phase field model is developed. The pattern formation during solidification of the two-dimensional interstitial liquid is considered by two coupled order parameters, the tetrahedricity as structure of ice and the salinity. The coupling and time-evolution of these order parameters are described by a consistent set of three model parameters. They determine the velocity of the freezing process and the structure formation, the phase diagram, the super-cooling and super-heating region, and the specific heat. The model is used to calculate the short-time frozen micro-structures. The obtained morphological structure is compared with the vertical brine pore space obtained from Xray computed tomography.

Formation of brine channels in sea ice

This work reports a detailed numerical study of the behavior of ellipsoid-shaped particles adsorbed at fluid interfaces. Former experiments have shown that micrometer-sized prolate ellipsoids aggregate under the action of strong and long-ranged capillary interactions. The latter are due to nonplanar contact lines and to the resulting deformations of the interface in the vicinity of the trapped objects. We first consider the case of a single ellipsoid and examine in detail the influence of contact angle and ellipsoid aspect ratio on interfacial distortions. We then focus on two contacting ellipsoids and study the optimum packing configuration depending on their size and/or aspect ratio mismatch. We thoroughly explore the variety of contact configurations between both ellipsoids and provide corresponding energy maps. Whereas the side-by-side configuration is the most stable state for identical ellipsoids, we find that the mismatched pair adopts an "arrow" configuration in which a finite angle exists between the particles long axes. Such arrows are actually seen in experiments with micron-sized ellipsoids and similarly with millimeter-sized mosquito eggs. These results complement our previous work (J.C. Loudet, B. Pouligny, EPL 85, 28003 (2009)) and highlight the importance of geometrical factors to explain the morphology of aggregated structures at fluid interfaces.

With the increase in the number of urban vehicles, various traffic problems have gradually emerged. Studying the causes of traffic congestion and proposing effective mitigation strategies have important practical significance. This paper proposes a macroscopic traffic flow model that considers the delayed speed difference. This paper applies nonlinear bifurcation to describe and predict nonlinear traffic phenomena on highways from the perspective of global stability of the traffic system. By using the traveling wave transformation, the proposed car-following model is converted into a macroscopic traffic flow model. Next, this paper employs the linear stability analysis to find the bifurcation points of the stability transition in the traffic system, exploring the qualitative characteristics of the inhomogeneous continuous traffic flow model. Theoretical derivations demonstrate the existence of bifurcation points within the model. Additionally, this paper plots the density-time space diagrams and phase plane diagrams of the system to visually present the sudden changes in traffic flow as variable parameters pass through these bifurcation points. Finally, this paper designs a feedback controller to regulate the Hopf bifurcation, aiming to delay or eliminate the occurrence of Hopf bifurcations in the stochastic system.

Bifurcation analysis and control of the full velocity difference model with delayed velocity difference

Although immiscible displacement in porous media has been extensively studied, a more comprehensive analysis of the underlying dynamic behaviors is still necessary. In this work, we conducted experimental and theoretical analyses on the dynamic interplay among channels during immiscible displacement under varying flow rates. In a rock-structured microfluidic chip, we observed typical displacement patterns, including viscous fingering and capillary fingering, and analyzed their frontiers and efficiencies. Interestingly, we discovered a novel 'V'-shaped recovery rate pattern, which differs from the monotonic curve considered in previous research. The recovery rate reaches its lowest point at an injection rate of 1 μL/min (42%), increasing to 55 and 65% at rates of 16 and 0.1 μL/min, respectively. This increase may attribute to all-directional displacement at lower rates and multi-fingering displacement at higher rates, contrasting with primary fingering displacement observed at intermediate rates. Furthermore, we developed a dual-tube model to investigate the dynamic mechanisms between adjacent channels during the displacement process. At high injection rates, an increase in low-viscosity fluid rapidly reduces overall average viscosity of the channels, accelerating displacement while hindering the displacement process in neighboring channels. Conversely, at low injection rates, increased capillary forces at pore-throat junctions delay breakthrough in one channel, promoting simultaneous displacement in parallel channels and ensuring stability. These findings significantly enhance our understanding of the interplay between viscous and capillary forces in porous media during displacement processes.

This work examines a field theory for directed homopolymers in a good solvent. The field theory is based on a lattice model for single- and double-strand polymers with length variables, direction-dependent pairing energy and interactions. As for the less explicit O(n)-symmetric model, there is a close relation to the conventional one-component branched polymer and the associated Lee-Yang problem. We derive results in the limiting cases of nearly complete denaturation and nearly complete renaturation. The single-strand critical exponent ν φ  is calculated in two-loop order. A plausible physical realization is RNA molecules with a periodic base sequence like AUAU.
