Tea-oil tree ( Camellia oleifera Abel.) is an important edible oil woody plant with a planting area over 3,800,000 hectares in southern China. Species of Diaporthe inhabit a wide range of plant hosts as plant pathogens, endophytes and saprobes. At present, relatively little is known about the taxonomy and genetic diversity of Diaporthe on C. oleifera . Here, we conducted an extensive field survey in Hunan Province in China to identify and characterise Diaporthe species associated with tea-oil leaf spots. As a result, eleven isolates of Diaporthe were obtained from symptomatic C. oleifera leaves. These isolates were studied by applying a polyphasic approach including morphological and phylogenetic analyses of partial ITS, cal , his3 , tef1 and tub2 gene regions. Two new Diaporthe species ( D. camelliae-oleiferae and D. hunanensis ) were proposed and described herein, and C. oleifera was revealed to be new host records of D. hubeiensis and D. sojae . This study indicated there is a potential of more undiscovered Diaporthe species from C. oleifera in China.

Characterization of Diaporthe species on Camellia oleifera in Hunan Province, with descriptions of two new species

Tea plant is one of the most important commercial crops worldwide. The Didymellaceae fungi can cause leaf blight disease of tea plant. In this study, 240 isolates were isolated from tea plant leaves of 10 provinces in China. Combined with multi-locus (ITS, LSU, RPB2 and TUB2 ) phylogenetic analysis and morphological characteristics, these isolates were identified as 25 species of six genera in Didymellaceae, including 19 known species Didymella coffeae-arabicae , D. pomorum , D. segeticola , D. sinensis , Epicoccum catenisporum , E. dendrobii , E. draconis , E. italicum , E. latusicollum , E. mackenziei , E. oryzae , E. poaceicola , E. rosae , E. sorghinum , E. tobaicum , Neoascochyta mortariensis , Paraboeremia litseae , Remotididymella anemophila and Stagonosporopsis caricae , of which 15 species were new record species and six novel species, named D. yunnanensis , E. anhuiense , E. jingdongense , E. puerense , N. yunnanensis and N. zhejiangensis . Amongst all isolates, D. segeticola was the most dominant species. Pathogenicity tests on tea plant leaves showed that E. anhuiense had the strongest virulence, while E. puerense had the weakest virulence. Besides, D. pomorum , D. yunnanensis , E. dendrobii , E. italicum , E. jingdongense , E. mackenziei , E. oryzae , E. rosae , E. tobaicum , N. mortariensis , N. yunnanensis , N. zhejiangensis and R. anemophila were non-pathogenic to the tea plant.

Didymellaceae species associated with tea plant (Camellia sinensis) in China

A novel genus, Paradingleyomyces was introduced to accommodate Pa. lepidopterorum sp. nov. , based on a multigene phylogenetic analysis and its distinct morphological characteristics. Maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference analyses (BI) of ITS, SSU, LSU, tef-1α , rpb1 , and rpb2 sequence data shown that Pa. lepidopterorum formed an independent lineage nested between Perennicordyceps and Dingleyomyces . Morphologically, Paradingleyomyces is distinguished from Perennicordyceps by the presence of a white subiculum on the stromata of Ophiocordyceps cf. cochlidiicola. Perithecia are produced sporadically from the base to the apex of the stromata, and the secondary ascospores exhibit a notable length-to-width ratio. These characteristics distinguish Paradingleyomyces from Perennicordyceps which exhibits tortuous, branched, clavate to cylindrical stromata with rhizomorphs, parasitism of coleopteran and hemipteran larvae, and colonizes a broader range of fungal hosts. Additionally, perithecia in Perennicordyceps typically arise from the middle to the upper regions of the stromata, with secondary ascospores displaying a comparatively lower length-to-width ratio. Paradingleyomyces is morphologically identical to Dingleyomyces in its direct production of superficial perithecia on the stromata of Ophiocordyceps species. However, the phylogenetic analysis indicates that Paradingleyomyces and Dingleyomyces are not congeneric. Moreover, this study introduces another novel species, Polycephalomyces tengchongensis , and a novel sexual morph of Pleurocordyceps yunnanensis . Dimorphic phialides and conidia of Pleurocordyceps parvicapitata were observed and described for the first time based on a fresh collection from Tengchong County, Yunnan Province, China.

Interesting mycoparasites and Paradingleyomyces lepidopterorum gen. et sp. nov. (Hypocreales, Polycephalomycetaceae) from Yunnan Province, China

Sinohygrocybegen. nov., typified by S.tomentosipessp. nov., is described upon morphological and molecular evidence. The new genus is characterised by its sinuate to subdecurrent or short deccurent, usually furcate and interveined and relatively distant lamellae, dry and whitish tomentose stipe, thin-walled ellipsoid to oviod, non-constricted basidiospores and particularly elongated basidia and a ratio of basidiospore to basidium length of >5 to 8; it is close to genera Chromosera and Gloioxanthomyces of the tribe Chromosereae, but morphologically differs from Chromosera in less umbilicate basidiomata, tomentose stipe and usually longer basidia and differs from Gloioxanthomyces in more robust basidioma and less glutinous pileus and/or stipe surface. Phylogenetic analyses, with ITS-LSU-RPB2 data, also indicate that Sinohygrocybe forms a very distinct and independent clade at the generic level. In addition, a Chinese new record G.nitidus is described here.

Additions to tribe Chromosereae (Basidiomycota, Hygrophoraceae) from China, including Sinohygrocybe gen. nov. and a first report of Gloioxanthomyces nitidus

Phylogenetically, the genera Cuphophyllus , Ampulloclitocybe and Cantharocybe are treated as basal in the family Hygrophoraceae, despite weak support. However, the exact phylogenetic positions of the three genera have remained unresolved, and taxa related to these genera are poorly known. In this study, a new clitocyboid genus Spodocybe was proposed based on multigenic phylogenetic inference datasets and morphological evidence. The analyses of ITS as well as two combined datasets ITS-nrLSU- rpb2 and ITS-nrLSU- rpb1 - rpb2 - tef1-α - atp6 supported that (1) Spodocybe formed a well-supported monophyletic clade; and (2) sisters Spodocybe and Ampulloclitocybe , along with Cantharocybe and Cuphophyllus also formed a monophyletic lineage, as sister to the rest of the Hygrophoraceae. Meanwhile, two new species, namely S. rugosiceps and S. bispora , from southwestern China, were documented and illustrated. These results support the new proposed genus Spodocybe , and that Spodocybe , Ampulloclitocybe , Cantharocybe and Cuphophyllus should be retained in the Hygrophoraceae as a new subfamily Cuphophylloideae.

Apiospora , Microdochium and Pestalotiopsis have been reported as plant pathogens, endophytes or saprotrophes worldwide. Combining multiple molecular markers with morphological characteristics, this study proposes three new species, viz. Apiospora bambusigena , Microdochium jianfenglingense and Pestalotiopsis solicola from southern China. Apiospora bambusigena and M. jianfenglingense were collected from bamboo in Hainan Province and P. solicola was collected from soil in Yunnan Province. The morphologically similar and phylogenetically closely-related species were compared.

Three new microfungi (Ascomycota) species from southern China

This study is based on three terrestrial saprobic fungi associated with Aquilaria in Guangdong and Yunnan provinces in China. All isolated species matched with generic concepts of Melomastia . Detailed morphological characteristics and combined multigene phylogeny of LSU, SSU, and TEF revealed that the new isolates represent two new species ( Melomastia guangdongensis and M. yunnanensis ), and one new host and geographical record ( M. sinensis ). Melomastia guangdongensis is distinct from the phylogenetically closest species in having semi-immersed to immersed, globose to subglobose ascomata, and two strata of the peridium. Melomastia yunnanensis differs from the phylogenetically closest species in having immersed ascomata, conical ostiolar canals, and branched pseudoparaphyses. The discovery of these two new species and one new record collected expands the number of saprobic species associated with Aquilaria from 28 to 31. Descriptions, photo plates, and phylogenetic analyses of taxa are provided.

Melomastia (Dothideomycetes, Ascomycota) species associated with Chinese Aquilaria spp.

Four new wood-inhabiting fungi viz. Phanerochaete castanea , P. citrinoalba , P. citrinorhizomorpha , and P. wuyiensis spp. nov. – are proposed based on a combination of morphological features and molecular evidence. Phanerochaete castanea is characterized by soft coriaceous basidiomata detachable from the substrate, becoming reddish brown in KOH, subulate cystidia with an obtuse apex. Phanerochaete citrinoalba is characterized by the coriaceous basidiomata with smooth, cracking hymenial surface, sterile margins with yellowish to whitish rhizomorphs, a monomitic hyphal system, generative hyphae mostly with simple septa and occasionally with clamp connections at basal hyphae. Phanerochaete citrinorhizomorpha is characterized by soft coriaceous basidiomata with a salmon to peach hymenial surface, a sterile margin with yellowish rhizomorphs, simple septate generative hyphae, and clavate to subfusiform or subulate cystidia with an obtuse apex. Phanerochaete wuyiensis is characterized by membranaceous basidiomata with smooth or locally tuberculate hymenial surface and the whitish rhizomorphs, generative hyphae with both simple septa and clamp connections at basal hyphae, cystidia projecting above hymenium. DNA sequences of the ITS and LSU markers of the studied samples were generated, and phylogenetic analyses were performed with Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference methods. The phylogenetic tree inferred from the concatenated ITS+nLSU dataset highlighted the placement of the four new species in the genus Phanerochaete (Phanerochaetaceae, Polyporales). Phylogenetically related and morphologically similar species to these four new species are discussed. Furthermore, an identification key to accepted species of Phanerochaete in China is given.

Four new species of Phanerochaete (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) from China

Fuscoporia is a polypore genus of Hymenochaetaceae that causes wood decay, although some species in the genus have medicinal values. Phylogenetic analyses of concatenated ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-nLSU sequence data and morphological features identified three new species, F. eucalypticola , F. resupinata and F. subtropica from Australia, China and Malaysia, and these new species derived from the Fuscoporia ferrea group. These three species are illustrated and described. A key to resupinate species of Fuscoporia without mycelial setae in the world is provided.

The genus Hydnoporia (Hymenochaetales, Hymenochaetaceae) was first described by Murrill in 1907. However, species of Hydnoporia were subsequently reclassified into the genera Hymenochaete , Hymenochaetopsis , and Pseudochaete due to overlapping morphological characteristics, leading to multiple synonyms and confusion among researchers. Recent phylogenetic analyses based on multimarker datasets have clarified the diversity and relationships within Hydnoporia , but East Asian species remain underrepresented due to limited morphological data. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive morphological and phylogenetic analysis of East Asian Hydnoporia specimens using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and translation elongation factor 1–α ( tef1 ) regions. From 42 specimens, we identified six species, including two novel species, Hydnoporia orienticorrugata sp. nov. and Hydnoporia subtabacina sp. nov. , and we report Hydnoporia rimosa for the first time in Korea. Phylogenetic analyses also support the recombination of Hymenochaete intricata and Hymenochaetopsis rigidula as Hydnoporia intricata comb. nov. and Hydnoporia rigidula comb. nov. , respectively. By elucidating the phylogenetic relationships and morphological traits of Hydnoporia species from East Asia, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the global diversity and phylogeny of the genus.
